I have a group of bored pets sadly, with two jobs and school and four pets, I'm not the most attentive parent. Cowboy has chubbed out a bit, and he still has at least a week or two left of his food so I'm not switching him to light and fit again till then. So I finally got around to taking him to the treadmill! Plus I got a bag of Venison food from Wysong to try it's 11% fat but 60% protein has even me a bit freaked out so I'm doing it in combo with his fruitables weight loss can food on the days when he doesn't get walked. ANYWAY, here's a very short video of his first ever water treadmill experience which he totally rocked. Normally a beginner does 3mins, he did 15. It was very slow paced because we don't want to scare him and I could tell even though it was just 15mins it was a good workout, he actually slept on the car ride home, then again, it might have been the stress of the whole event. I did a laser session too since we were there. Rascal, has been bored out of his mind. He goes out maybe 5mins each day. He's not a fan of the cold or the snow, but he really disliked using a litter pan, even when it's freshly cleaned. So he spends most of his days inside, and he has more energy nowadays, so he's not as interested in napping as he use to be. He does have a ravenous appetite. And that mixed with boredom= many occasions of stealing food. I had a bag of food I brought for a friend on my desk and he chewed through the bag. Granted he really likes this food, I'll probably bring some more home for him. The name is "Legacy" and while it seems like a pretty good food, because of the price my boss is not interested in carrying it. We have equal quality foods that are cheaper. ANYWAY, I decided to try him on the slim cat ball again. Which I had given to my rats and so is a tad chewed up, but he actually took to it this time. He emptied the whole ball. (And then found the bag and chewed through it) But this is exciting cause now I can give him a snack and it'll take him a lot longer to eat it and he'll have something to do and "steal" food without actually stealing it. As for the rats well, I wish I could find more time to let them roam. And now they have to share their ball with Rascal lol, I guess I'll buy a second one, but all we have left is pink evil so it's a dig box once a week, fresh veggies most days, and, the occasional piniata plus the toys they already have haging in their cage. I built them a playground in my room for when they do roam biggrin

I've been thinking about buying a treadmill. I already have an elliptical and I love it, this would be more for Cowboy, though I'd like to use it as well. So two I was looking at online, 1 is $160 and it's electrical, the other only $75 bucks because it's manual. I assume ellictrical might be a little bit easier, especially to get Cowboy on because not only does he need to trust the thing, but with a manual he'd need a tad more training to get it started. Basically like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZbsfZ8gxCcany suggestions? Better to spend an extra 90 bucks and get ellectrical?

Get the electrical. Since Cowboys already done the water tread mill it will be easier for him to transfer. I'm thinking of getting out one for Will and I. MIL has one in storage that we could both use burning_eyes

Just because he's used to a hydrotherapy treadmill does not mean that'll translate to an electric treadmill. Riddle is terrified of electric treadmills even though she does just fine in the underwater treadmill.
A manual treadmill or carpet mill is a different sort of workout than an electric one. An electric one is pure cardio- just running, jogging, or walking. You can adjust the pace and the dogs can usually go for longer on them. Since a manual treadmill or carpet mill is powered entirely by the dog, it requires more muscle use, especially in the front end. They're basically digging in and pulling to move the belt. I bought a carpet mill (or rather, harassed my mom into buying me one for Christmas for the rest of my life) for Melon this winter, and it's been great. He gets tired out in no time flat, it's the only time I ever get him to pant from exhaustion. It took me two solid weeks to get him to not be mortified of it, the sissy.
Riddle doesn't really use it though. I find that with the extra effort it takes to move the belt, she ends up sore on her bad elbow. Since Cowboy has front end lameness, I'd go for the electric one... it'll be easier on his joints.

That's a good point about the muscle work, but what if I got one that is adjustable and I put it on a slant, it would be like climbing a hill I'm imagining him using mostly his back legs, do you think it would still be hard on his elbows? I have to start by paying off dad, and figuring out what I'm doing with this tooth, so not this Thursday but maybe on my next big pay two weeks after I'll have some left over. Mom brought up the point that winter is almost done and maybe I should get it next year, though it'd still be good on rainy days. And if I can't find one that fits under my bed, I'll have to ask if I can store it in the basement.

The room its in is really small too, so I have to cram myself between the front of the mill and the wall in order to get in front of it, and video from there is pretty much his face a foot away from the lens. I really want video of him on it, I just haven't figured out how to get it. Even on the incline though, they use their front end more. The whole process of moving the belt is done by digging in with the front feet. Now, I've never used a manual treadmill, so it might be different, but that's the way it is with the carpet mill. Actually, I really wish I had room for an electric treadmill too, so I could do different types of workouts with the dogs. Unfortunately, even if I could convince Chris, there's just no place for it. I did just take over half our kitchen with another chest freezer for dog food though. rofl

That's awesome, and I don't even know what the difference is between a carpet mill and a manual treadmill lol, i thought it was different names for the same thing. I found an electrical one at 160 and messaged the guy about it. I'm pretty sure folded it won't fit under my bed. But at least I could prop it up in a corner or something. Or, for 70 bucks more (230) I could maybe get the tempo foldable treadmill, which I'll have to check the dimensions on http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/4/FitnessWellness/Treadmills/PRD~0840111P/Tempo+Evolve+Fold-Away+Treadmill.jsp?locale=en

After looking it up online, it doesn't look like it would be too hard to build a carpet mill myself. So I'm just going to leave the bulky electric treadmill in the garage and build Will a carpet mill. I can even set up a little awning to keep it dry and free of snow.
Any one know what type of harness is typically used with a carpet mill or treadmill?

I think it's equivalent to teeter in agility. As long as yo start off really slowly and never push the dog it's not hard. I always assumed Cowboy would be terryfied but he did well with the water treadmill. The therapist says if I get a treadmill, I should start by not turning it on, and getting him to get on it. Then u put it on the slowest possible setting and basically sit in front of them just feeding them treats non stop. Always keeping it short and stoping before they get fed up. It's something I really want to get but my next pay is going to pay for his fractured tooth and still owe my dad 300 bucks so I'm holding off for at least another month. At which point it might be best to wait till fall, though the way I figure, spring is probably the time to buy as most people are getting rid of their used ones.
