Yep. It's definitely a pattern with me. I love Wuthering Heights, which has the same love triangle and "doomed romance" aspect. And BatB, obviously. And V for Vendetta.

Even fandoms that have seemingly nothing in common with PotO, I can relate some theme of the story to them. (Well, some of the themes are pretty universal, I guess.)

I have to that I really didn't care for beauty and the beast...but maybe that's because I am into more dark and sinister plots. Let's see there is Hunchback of Notre Dame, there is Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde, there is the Picture of Dorian Gray, there's Frankenstein, Phantom of the Opera, and beauty and the Beast. They all have the similar thread maybe not so for the story of Dorian Gray, but the same premise. You also see this same story line in Shakespeare. Hamlet, Othello, Romeo and Juliet. Unrequited love..or star crossed lovers that shall never be. It is human instinct to be attracted to the bad things of/in ife and make them into something meaningful and beautiful. Even the fairy tales that we grew up are dark sinister things that got disneyfied. For example Little mermaid doesn't get her wish and walk on land, oh yeah she does for a while but in the end the prince kissed the other girl and mermaid becomes sea foam. Snow white is a lot more darker than the Disney version. Cinderella ends up saving her step sisters and they marry dukes of the court while step mother becomes a maid on the outside of the castle. Then there is also the sequel to snow white snow white and rose red...it's almost like it's a multiple personality story. The original beauty and the beast is about this beast/prince who calls all girls in neighboring towns to go on a quest/contest..the girl who makes it through his gauntlet of tasks will get to sleep with beast/prince for a night. The poor girl makes all the way to the night...she does not know that beast is prince. He turns into prince when she sleeps. She tells her mother and gets advice to use a candle, however she gets wax on beast he awakens and she is banished...she does end up winning prince and breaking spell because she was courageous enough to defy orders of beast not to light any candles. Bad boys are more interesting than the good guys...we often see in these kinds of stories good guys are usually bad or have bad traits...bad guys we usually see some kind of saving grace or good trait. sorry I got winded and a little off topic.

Personally, I usually like men with at least a streak of insanity. It makes them more interesting. I've liked Phantom since I was about 5, and it's impacted my taste in men more than you can imagine.

I do tend to be attracted to such characters. <3
All they need and/or want is love. I think that is the greatest.

It's a great essay by Suzy McKee Charnas which might explain why we are typically drawn to this character type. biggrin
