Atlantis, what do you think about this ancient place? Was it real? Was it a myth? If it was real did the people of Atlantis merely have a highly technological society or was there something mystical, magical about the legends? How did they affect the other peoples around them? Let's have some discussion. cool

Perhaps it was a pre-Babylonian/Egyptian civilization that was destroyed in a flood---maybe even the Great Flood found in so many different mythologies?

There are other legends of buried, drowned, or hidden cities. Ys, Rocabarraigh, Lyonesse, Hyperborea...even El Dorado. I'm sure one day we'll fine another sunken city somewhere.

Mankind has wandered this earth for tens of thousands of years. Our ancestors were just as intelligent as we are, though probably not as technologically advanced, and I believe they were capable of creating great civilizations, even though they may not have created anything which could survive the passage of millenniums. Perhaps all of the legendary places are a race memory of such civilizations.

Ancients were actually aware of things like electricity and steam power. In ancient Greece they have found some primitive calculating machines--ancient computers, essentially. However, they thought of these things as, well, toys. They didn't like the idea of relying on technology for ... well, everything, like we do today. Because of that, I'm not wild about the technology theory, though its possible they reached a certain degree of advancement before anyone else.

Well technology is only one small way of measuring advancement. That's the reason I stated it that way. They were just as 'smart' as we are, and accomplished things which would be daunting to us. I believe that we have a bad habit of underestimating them because they didn't have as many fancy gadgets as we do but them again they weren't causing 'global warming' either. I have heard and seen the ancient machines to which you refer. The Romans built aqua ducts to carry water from mountain lakes that consistently dropped only 2 or 3 degrees over miles. Rome had running water and toilets. They built roads that are still in use today. Our asphalt highways are lucky to survive a few years.

This conversation is SO getting away from atalantis, but I completely agree. Calling societies primitive when they had such structure is kind of ridiculous. Even societies who were not great builders built things like Stonehenge. There are buried walls and dwellings all over Western Europe that have lasted thousands and thousands of years--here in the US if a building is a few hundred years old its a huge deal. Not to mention the complicated, intricate social structures that we don't seem to have so much today. :/

While I was in the Army I was stationed in a city that was celebrating it's millennial anniversary. That just totally blew my mind. We are so proud of 235 years. But anyway, back to Atlantis....

Looks very cool, someone should send down some robots to explore the site, under a mile of water I believe it is too deep for a manned submersible. They probably won't find anything to absolutely confirm that it is Atlantis but it is in the right location and being surrounded by volcanoes matches Plato's description. Thank you for posting this. smile
