Sorry that you're having to go through all this I can assume that you figured that because he was a friend for such a long period of time that things would've gone well disclosing that information to him.
I can understand that religion might be playing a part here in his overall reaction seeing that it isn't very widely accepted within the christian community, but it seems as tho he has also got to come to terms with his best friend disclosing this information to him and he may just need time to get his head around it cause I'm not entirely sure how close you guys are but this shouldn't have changed anything and yes he can help being a homophobe weither he's deciding to use that as a coping mechanism as screwed up as it is or not is another story but we also don't know if he's questioning his own sexuality or maybe had feelings for you other than a friend before which he has surpressed due to his choice of religion.
