When I listen to certain artists I'm always reminded of a certain movie, or type of movie, or even a book or certain author.

It's not because the artist's music was featured in said movie or tv show, it's because my brain makes strange connections.

For example, Gnarls Barkely always makes me think of zombie films and (if you get both of these I will give you a cookie) listening to World's End Girlfriend brings me back to Haruki Murakami's novels, specifically Hard-Boiled Wonderland And The End Of The World.

There's more, but those are the only two I can think of just now.

You got anything like this?

Yes! That feeling is very familiar. Of course when I try to recall a specific instance I can't think of anything..

Well, now you've got a place to note it down next time it happens! razz

It's not that they remind me of a certain book or song or anything like that...I get the typical "I remember who I was with/or place I went when I listen to this song". Most of the time, it's a memory I wish to forget. gonk stressed

Ha! Yeah that was what I was thinking

@Humble - yes sounds and smells do really remind me of things that happened in my own life. There's nothing like pushing your cart down the isle of a grocery store when an old song comes on that reminds you of your high school crush and you think to yourself... my god I sure was stupid back then. hehehe

Yeah... that's the tricky thing about how the brain associates memories with all sorts of things. On the one hand, it can be so great to remember nice things, but it works the other way too, doesn't it? For me, it's music that ex-boyfriends introduced me to that I have a hard time enjoying again.

I get this a lot. With actual movie music I see a "flashback" from the scene where the music was used but in other times I get this idea of the movie or scene the music could be used in. I also some times associate smells or senses to certain music. For example the main theme from the movie How To Train a Dragon makes me "see and smell" the brisk sea wind etc.

I rarely get any bad memories from music but I might think of some sad stuff. I've noticed that when it comes to my actual feelings or memories, then scents create much more bigger associations than music does. There is one exception though. I know this is corny, but the cry of a seagull creates an unbelievable longing for the sea. Some times it's so bad that it actually hurts my heart. When I was a kid majority of my summers were spent at the shores of the arctic sea, fishing with the salty, sharp, wind at my face and I loved it. The seagulls remind me of that.

For not-so-mysterious reasons, I can't help but think of Mass Effect 3's endings (the extended endings; the originals just make me think of a farting noise) when I hear Yuel's Theme from FF XIII-2. Somewhat stranger is that it works both ways. I think I may have hit my head at some point.
