I've been studying Japanese for a very long time. After a very long break from studying I've started again, but I just don't feel like my heart is in it. This is crushing me because I used to be so passionate about learning. So, why are you learning Japanese? What keeps you motivated? (and please don't say anime/manga if that's your sole reason).

Around here, there are no Japanese people. I find most Japanese music to be too mainstream and bubblegum-formulaic (Jpop honestly drives me crazy. Any good indie J-music you know?). I find most dorama and movies to be the same (again... suggestions... pleeeaaase....). There's no one to practice with (I'd try skype but I have no privacy in my house and my parents would be like "the f*** are you doing?" ) and not many ways to practice. It's just become dull and tedious because I can't find any pay-offs. I want to go to Japan, but I won't be able to until Junior year in college (I'm a senior in high school)... so how can I stay motivated? In your opinion, what's a great reward? What keeps you going?

ありがとう!

I already posted my reasons in your thread in GI, but I'll copy-paste it here so people in this guild can see it:

At first, anime and manga were my main drive in learning Japanese. Unlike weeaboos today who just pluck random Japanese words right out of anime they watch, I paid attention to necessary vocabulary like greetings. Before I took a formal Japanese class my first year of college, I had already knew all the basic Japanese greetings because they're uttered all the time in Cardcaptor Sakura. I also paid attention to speech patterns and noticed how they differ between male and female, different age groups, and social levels. For example, a male character would speak rough around his buddies, but switch to polite form when around authority like a teacher (unless the character's the type of guy who speaks like a 'scrapper' to everybody). However eventually, I began to take interest in other aspects of Japanese culture, like their tea ceremonies, their history (even if they've committed war atrocities, I still admire their history, especially the periods before the Meiji Era), their mythology, etc. My favourite subject in college ended up being Japanese because I loved it so much and I even considered majoring in Japanese (but because I wanted to branch out to more than just Japan, I'm majoring in East Asian Studies. I'm thinking of double-majoring in EAS and Japanese, though).

I think I recall you mentioning a few times in GI that you live close to Albany in New York, right? I typed "Albany demographics" onto Google and came across this. The census is old by 10 years, though. The most recent 2010 US Census Bureau concerning the entire state of New York says there's 0.2% Japanese people living there. That's not much, but there are a few Japanese people here and there living in your state.

I live in PA and I've gotten job offers for speaking japanese in NYC. NY might not have a whole lot of Japanese people who claim residence but there's more than a few in the NYC and North Jersey area... Mitsuwa Market place is there and I go to get japanese groceries and real ramen and other stuff I can can't get where I live.

As for my reasons for learning Japanese. I love anime and I would like to someday know enough to not need subtitles. I love japanese culture in general. And Japanese is just a genuinely challenging language for english speakers to learn so that challenge made me want to try harder. Of all the different languages of the world I think japanese clicks with me in regards to music too. Something about the way Japan's different music styles differ enough makes their music cool to me.

My desire to learn the language comes from wanting to better grasp the depth and complexity of Japan & it's people, as well as showing that depth and complexity to those who may not get to see it otherwise. The Japan I know has office workers working overtime to pay for their family to have a roof over their heads, farmers working the fields to make great crops their gov't is slowly outsourcing, punk rockers and hip hoppers trying to find their own identity and their own place in this world, among countless others out there with their own story to tell. I want to uncover the Japan beyond what's presented to conventional media and show that works to others, so they can benefit from it as I have.
