Guild mules are often used for collecting donations form guild members. This gold is used for prizes for contests as well as other things with the guild. People create mules because the gold that is donated directly to the guild can only be used for subforums and many guilds feel, after a certain point, that they no longer need any more subforums.
I questioned some people on whether or not guild mules were allowed according to guild rules and here is the answer I got. "Guild Mules are kind of a bend of the rules. They dont want you creating multiple accounts and obtaining gold that way. They also dont want you to trick people and just use the gold for yourself. Obviously, due to the large amount of mules on gaia, it is not heavily enforced (having guild mules, they do enforce people who horde gold using multiple accounts)."
If you were going to create a mule account you would need to use a separate email from the one you already have.
