M'nie flinched at his first touch, then leaned into him, wrapping one arm numbly about his shoulders, still trying to force her brain into working. No, it wasn't his fault, or her fault. It takes two to tango, as the saying goes, and if it was anyone's fault, they shared it equally. She cuddled into the bed fur gratefully, pulling it around her shoulders. Juice would be nice she mumbled, trying to calm herself, though her first thought had been for Pryth, of course she should calm herself for the baby as well.

She waited until he was behind her, rustling about for her juice, before she mumbled out something else. Her name will be Merel. It was probably the closest she would get to telling him the truth, and if he hadn't heard her, oh well. She had only said it out of shock anyway, and the chances she would repeat it were slim to none. She flinched as Zelith fussed at them both, but he still hadn't addressed her by name. He must still be upset with her.

While rushing about to get M'nie a cup of redfruit juice, T'rel heard M'nie mutter something. As he turned around to walk back over to her, he paused. "Merel?" he repeated. The name had a nice sound to it, but it sounded--off. Had she decided not to have K'nar's name as part of the baby's name? That was against tradition, but--wait. "Merel?" he asked again, handing her the cup.

He stared wide eyed at her, brown orbs studying the bluerider. "But that's--" that sounded like a combination of his and M'nie's names! "But you said she was K'nar's!" He seemed to have forgotten that M'nie in fact, had not said who the father was. She had implied--but not said. "Mine?" he asked with disbelief, sitting down on the chair across from her's.

She folded her hands in her lap and stared at them. He had heard her all right. Well, maybe it was better that way. Zelith already knew, so it was only a matter of time before T'rel knew, after all. May as well come from her. She paused, listening to how he pronounced their daughter's name. Trust a Harper's tongue to make anything sound sweeter.

I never said she was K'nar's she interjected quietly after his assertion. When he sat down across from her, she spared a quick glance at his face, then let her eyes settle back on her hands folded in her lap. She nodded once - that was all. She wasn't sure what his reaction would be, and she didn't know whether to brace herself, flinch, get defensive, or what. She had misled him, yes, but never once lied to him.

"You implied it," T'rel corrected himself, frowning slightly. So she hadn't lied--but she certainly had come close to it. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" he asked, glancing at her stomach. He couldn't see any signs of the baby within yet. Still, what was she thinking? Riding during drills? She could have gotten hurt! "Shells, M'nie, you've got to be more careful," he told her in a fierce whisper. "No more drills. You could get hurt. You need to rest--I'll give you stuff to do so you aren't just laying around all day, but... Nothing dangerous." He shook his head.

"You need to focus on keeping you--and the baby--" Their baby. That was an unfamilar, but strangely welcome thought. Their baby. "safe. Not drills, not how to fight Thread. I can give you write ups of the formations so you can study them if you need them."

M'nie could have been gaping like a fish. He....wasn't responding badly at all. She had been so scared, and all for nothing. She relaxed a bit, leaning back in her chair and wrapping both hands around her cup of juice, sipping on it with a pensive expression, seeming slightly amused.

Has Zelith ever monitored your every action and reaction, looking closely for the most finite sign of physical pain? she asked, seeming bemused for all of the attention Pryth had given her. Pryth focused so hard on me I had to remind him to fly straight. Finally convinced him to focus on not dropping me out of the sky and let me worry about me, but he still watched, just not as close. Healers said I'd have to stop at around five months along, and I'm only four. But I'll stop. I was swimming with the dolphins and noticed a bump, so that's good enough for me she yammed on, more than ready to placate T'rel, grateful for his response. And, while she was technically grounded, she was still able to study their formations and the like.

The baby is all I've been thinking about. I go swimming with the dolphins almost every day. Helps with the aches, and tires me out enough to get some decent sleep. Been watching my diet, too she added, hoping to make him feel better.

T'rel at first didn't seem at all appeased. He took a breath, opened his mouth to argue that the blue dragon should have been more careful. He seemed to think better of it, though, and closed his mouth. He glared in the direction of M'nie's weyr. What if the baby had gotten hurt? What if M'nie--no, he couldn't think about that. He walked over to the basket of bubblypies one of the candidates had brought him and offered one to M'nie. "They're not bad cold," he added.

"You're already having aches?" he asked, frowning. "Do the healers know? Are they treating you well?" He sounded almost suspicious. He had already lost one loved one-- he didn't think he could handle it if he lost a friend, too. "If you're in pain, you should ask for fellis to help you sleep..." The Weyrleader had very little experience with pregnant women. Jailla had been difficult enough. Now he had two of them to watch over?

M'nie looked up at him, an incredulous expression across her face. Fellis? Are you trying to kill the baby? she asked, calming slightly as she saw it wasn't intentional - he probably didn't know any better.

Aches are a part of a pregnancy - perfectly normal, no treatment required. It kind of happens when your insides have to move out of the way for the little one and then you pack on 30 pounds your muscles aren't used to carrying she offered, hoping the explanation would be sufficient. Swimming with the dolphins helps me sleep, and won't harm the baby. Any medications I take could affect the health of the baby and harm it, so don't try and slip me anything she added with a wry grin. It was she who had a history of slipping him things, not the other way around, after all. She gestured to the bubbly pie he had given her earlier that wasn't yet finished, hinting that she didn't need another.

At M'nie's words, T'rel's eyes widened. He was horrified. "Kill the baby?" he repeated. "No, I was just trying to help..." Fellis could harm the baby? He hadn't known that. Honestly, he didn't know much about pregnant women at all, except what he had heard from Jailla. He hoped M'nie wouldn't be as absurdly sensitive about--everything. Why, he had simply mentioned that the greenrider was as healthy as a runner, and one might have thought he had declared she resembled something threadscored and horrible. Of course, he hadn't mentioned that to her, for the woman had chased him out of the room they had been occupying.

So he had come to the conclusion that pregnant women were frightening. "Oh, I wouldn't!" he assured her earnestly. He would never do anything in attempt to harm the unborn child within M'nie's womb. At least, not intentionally. "There must be something I can do, though...To make you more comfortable."
