At the man’s negative response to her latest question, the hidden smile faded away and she lifted her blank face to look up at him. She did not want to cry and she was not going to do that. Quietly, she sat there, staring at him with not an emotion etched into her face. ‘How do you explain something to someone else when it made no sense to you?’ she pondered to herself, eyes trained on the man before her. She had asked because it seemed plausible. It had given her a fleeting notion of hope. What good was that now that he had made it clear that Eriko-Taicho had never given birth, worse yet to a daughter one hundred and fifty years ago. Feeling defeated in every sense of the word, Yūrei blew out a sigh and bowed her head once more. Part of her had known always that she would not be able to accomplish this without external help. However, for all of the years that she knew herself, she had been repressing such an idea, denying it without a second thought until now. She raised her chin, sucking on her lower lip, and directed her gaze to her right so that Lee may see at least half of how strained she felt in that moment. Some minutes passed again and she could not help thinking to herself that this would have been so much easier if Erudaa had been more specific in his instructions. No, he had sent her off with the cryptic idea that if she located Eriko-Taicho, her questions would be answered.
Shaking her head sadly, the young girl pushed herself into a standing position and returned her gaze to the man in front of her. “How do I tell you this, Lee-Taicho?” Her arms crossed themselves on her chest and a slight smirk tugged at her cheeks. “I asked because it would have been nice to believe that at last, I found a living relative, someone to call me theirs. So much for that,” she said, glancing over her left shoulder as way to convey that the heaviness of such words did not affect her. “I was told that she could help me,” Yūrei continued, clarifying her statements about why she had thought that her Taicho would be able to assist her in the first place, “Obviously, luck felt like skipping this orphan girl today.” Her gaze had stayed averted during these last few statements but now, she looked at him again with a shrug in her shoulder. “Anyway, are we finished about my Shikai training? I would really like to learn more about it and there is no better time like the present, is there not?” There was no half-hearted smile or a really bright one for that matter. Simply, Yūrei grabbed hold of both of her lengthy pigtails and began to tug on them absentmindedly. She did not like to talk about this kind of thing with just anyone and therefore, she was feeling very uncomfortable, a sensation that made her act odd even at the best of times.
