He could feel the breath of the beast behind him, hot and stinking. Its shadow dyed the clouds black, its presence, made the air foul, and heated, creating circle of hell in an expanse of heaven. A hell trying to suck him into its flames.
He pumped his wings, rising high, catching a draft that pulled him forward. But even with the extra speed the air provided, he knew that it was only minutes before the beast caught up. He had to fight back.
He reached down and wrapped his fingers - ivory and long - around the hilt of his blade. The whisper it sliding from his sheath was drowned by a roar that shook the very particles of the air around him. Too late.
Something slammed into him with the force of montrous stone fist. The world went black for a few seconds; all he could feel was the air rushing past him as he tumbled from the sky. And then pain. In his chest, his legs, fire consuming his body.
It took him a second to realize that the scream that pierced the air came from him.
Time was gone, no time to waste. Quickly, ignoring the fire under his skin, he righted himself, hovered, eyes darting, waiting, watching.
Black flashed across the clouds to his right. He spread his wings wide {Death from above; -C}, reached deep to summon. Pinpoints of light set the clouds around him aglow, first dozens, then hunreds. They hovered, and then moved, all falling like a hundred stars.
Agony shook the sky. Pain seized him. That small attack sapped too much energy, from his already weak body; the wounds that would take hours to heal already...
A flash to his right. He only so the shadow of it coming; it was too late the dodge.
He only felt the burning of his back, heard the paperish rending of wings, and an inhuman scream.
