I am a Senior, who have just got promoted to section leader a while back because our best players in the low brass/woodwind left, and now it's time for band camp. I have a section leader assistant who does a much better job than I do, and we both didn't attend the section leader practices. I have been in band more than he has and he's a Sophomore, which adds to my embarrassment. I have been assertive, but I guess it wasn't enough, and I think the bottom line is trying to remember commands. The commands I know are fairly easy to memorize, but I choke up constantly. If I would have known I was signing up for this, I would rather be the assistant than the actual leader.... I am going to die of a panic attack or something. @__@ I play Trombone with 1st parts, and this is my eighth year in band. smile

Being section leader isn't always about having the correct answers or being the best at your instrument. My section leader last year was a really good trombone and upright bass player. He was known for his strong solos in jazz and his opinions about band related issues. He seemed like he knew everything but there were times where he had to admit that he didn't know his music or that we should have worked on it. He sometimes goofed around but over time he changed to benefit the band. He knew that he messed up alot sometimes but he knew how to control the stress by just taking a moment to just breath.

Anyways I know how you feel. I'm a junior, last year I was an understudy to my section leader and now I am section leader this year. There are sometimes where I feel that this one senior should just take over because he asks more questions than I do or has the answers that are needed. But I know that there are reasons why I was appointed section leader and not him or the other senior. There are probably reasons you were promoted to section leader and not the sophmore. So stay strong and I believe that you will be an awesome section leader this year! xd

Just do your best when it comes to your section. Give good directions, but also be willing to listen to what others think as well. I was a section leader when I was still in high school. It was disorienting (of course, we didn't have to learn those fun signals you had to learn) at first, but I got the hang of it. My section was a little difficult to get them to actually listen to me, since they all knew what a pushover I was, but I was able to get them to know who's boss....I think. Don't follow my example on being a pushover. But listening to your section, and anyone else, for that matter, is the best thing to do. Always be open to suggestions from others, older or younger.
