Sometimes I really hate the witch/Pagan community.

It seems that more and more often I find people who are, apparently, incapable of being intellectual, or can't be bothered with looking things up. Half-a** pretty much how they do EVERYTHING, and then they'll run around screaming about how persecuted they are when they get corrected by the few and far between members of the community that actually bother to know what the ******** they are talking about.

This isn't just Gaia that I'm bitching about and it isn't just PaganSpace either. It all over the ******** place. Here, other message-boards and social networking sites, at "club" meetings... everywhere there is a witch/Pagan community I see this and its starting to really bother me!

It doesn't help with all of the miss information out there that people can get a hold of.

From what I can tell there are two factors that feed these problems.
The first is the rampant publication of misinformation. People read them and feel they have done their research and because they have read x number of sources that say xyz they feel it has to be true. It can be hard for them to fathom that those source materials all have it wrong. So they stick to their convictions because they don't feel they have been lazy and they don't feel that that number of sources could be incorrect.
The second is the persecution complex or personality replacement syndrome. Some people are just immature. They feel the need to gain attention or sympathy by joining a group they perceive to be persecuted so they can be special and different. Others are not sure who they themselves are so they try to use being a witch or being pagan as an identity or to make themselves seem more interesting to others.

I understand why it happens and what contributes to it.

I was more just ranting about it because I as sick of being associated with these people just because I am an Eclectic Neo-Pagan and a witch.

i have to say, when i was first, i dont know... 'converted' to paganism i had a group at college. i couldnt fathom being solitary, it wasnt my style at all. but for similar issues, i have ended up cutting myself off from everyone in that group (save my girlfriend) and although it is not ideal, i have embraced solitary practice.

it simplifies things, at the very least

I agree, they can be garment-rendingly frustrating a lot of the time. (Its one of the reasons I never go on PaganSpace.) But its just one of those things that you gotta though out.

If a person doesn't know you and just lumps you together with them, who cares? You don't know them and they don't know you. What does their opinion matter? If someone you do know personally makes the same mistake then you just set them strait. Easy as that.
