"Yeah. Just two. Can we seat ourselves?" Zatanna was saying.
The server, a young man only a little older than Billy was, looked like his eyes were about to pop out of his head. Zatanna was really more of a Gotham type; even capes didn't dress like this in Keystone. "Uh... Yes Ma'am."
She smiled, grabbed two menus, and started over towards one of the closer booths. "You know, I think I've only had a sandwich and some lemonade in the last two days," she said thoughtfully, sliding in on one side, "I wonder why I'm not hungry." Shrugging, she passed Billy a menu and started looking at her own.

Billy was looking at the menu. He had eaten earlier too, as Billy, since he didn't need to eat as Captain Marvel.
"I'd, uh, I'd chalk it up to being put in whatever magical stasis you were in," he said, looking into Zee's eyes over the top of the menu. And he just couldn't pull away.
Gosh darnit, Billy! Snap out of this! She's an adult, you're a teenager! She won't date you! the more rational part of his mind said. Right now, though, he didn't care.

"Hm," was the only response he got, and it seemed to be a pro-forma one only. Most of her attention was focused on the menu. Did she want some kind of fruit drink, or just a soda? Her stomach was feeling better...

Billy frowned a bit, and went back to his menu. To be honest, he didn't really want anything: his stomach was in knots over the last few minutes, and all he could think about was that self-assured strut she had been doing as she walked into the Denny's...
He shook his head, and went back to the menu, trying to focus on food, not Zee.
"I'm... not really hungry at the moment," he muttered. "I guess I'll just have a soda or something."

She grinned at him. "No ice cream?" The kid she remembered had wanted ice cream with every meal. Even pancakes. "Maybe I should be worrying about you." To be honest, she was anyway. Strange behavior aside, the rest of the heavy hitters on the JLA were missing in action. Why had someone as powerful as Captain Marvel been overlooked? It didn't make any sense.

Billy actually shook his head, and set his head down on the table like a child.
"Nnnnnrrrr... I don't feel good. My stomach's in knots..." he muttered, looking for all the world like an over-sized child-- which he technically was. "But why're you thinking something's wrong with me? Apart from that, I mean."

She quirked an eyebrow at him. "Well, you're older than the Billy that I know, so maybe that accounts for it. You've just never shown much interest in my wardrobe before now."

Billy looked to her with utmost shock and a hint of fear, and immediately started trying to explain himself, but all he could do was stammer and look utterly foolish, blushing and now sweating.
After a moment, though, he just groaned, and put his face in his hands, his elbows propped up on the table.
"I'm sorry," he said, his voice muffled a bit. "You must think I'm being really weird... I-I just... It's... I-- I don't get it..."
He removed his hands from his face, not daring to look her in the eyes. "I never noticed how... how... well, beautiful you are until now," he admitted. "Even last night I didn't feel anything, but right now..." he said, before sighing, and shaking his head.
"I-I... I gotta go," he said, before moving away from Zatanna with a WHOOSH! and getting out of the Denny's in that same instant, running away... and just continuing to run.

Zatanna just sat their for a moment, eyes rather wide. Then she sighed, got to her feet, and started after him. However good she was at moving in high heels, there was no way that she was catching a fifteen year old kid in them. ... Maybe giving him some space was the best idea. Approaching the counter, she flashed a small, apologetic smile. "Sorry; I guess I just need a Coca Cola to go." She could drink it at home... Home. That sounded great.

Billy just kept running, until he reached the edge of Keystone City and then he stopped. He was being so stupid, but he was so scared. He didn't want to hear her reject him, even though everything told him it was inevitable...
And then, as Zatanna left the Denny's a short bald man with large circular glasses approached her.
"Ahh, hello there, Miss Zatara!" the man said, smiling. "Greetings to you. My name is Thomas Ivasan; I'm a member of the Fawcett City Chamber of Commerce, and I'm a big fan of yours! Would you mind giving me your autograph? I'm afraid I didn't bring any paper or pencils with me, so if you'd be so kind...?"

Zatanna studied him with cool blue eyes for a beat, then smiled the smile of a practiced stage performer, though something in her eyes stayed cautious. "Of course; hold on just a moment."
She swirled her left hand, and suddenly a pad of black paper appeared in her right, the trick so smooth that it was impossible to tell if it had been simple misdirection or the real thing. Then she pulled a silver pen out of her pocket and, without looking down at the paper (suggesting that she'd signed far too many autographs to be bothered anymore), wrote 'To Thomas, my one and only fan in Fawcett City-- Zatanna Zatara' in flowing silvery letters. Then she handed him the slip of paper with another smile. "What are the chances, bumping into somebody who has watched my show at a Keystone City Denny's!" Very, very low. Something about this bothered her.

Ivasan beamed, and took the autograph and bowed his head in thanks-- and then he felt his cell phone vibrate.
"Excuse me," he said, taking the call. He listened for a moment, and said. "Ah yes, I did. I just got her autograph, just like I told you I would. Oh, yes-- She's here. ... Now."
After that, a bolt of golden lightning struck behind Zee. A large hand clasped itself around her mouth, and the other grabbed one wrist, then the other, and gripped them with enough force to cause pain.
"You picked a bad time to be seen with Captain Marvel, Zatanna Zatara," said Black Adam as he lifted up into the air. "Sivana, will the boy come?"
"Oh, if I know him-- and I do-- he most certainly will. Especially for this beauty! Why do male heroes find themselves attracted to beautiful women?" Thaddeus Sivana asked, grinning evilly up at Zatanna. Of corse, neither he nor Black Adam had known Billy was attracted to Zatanna-- Sivana had seen them together and had made an educated guess, based on their body language inside the Denny's, as he had been watching from a window.
Meanwhile Black Adam continued to fly up into the air, still covering Zatanna's mouth and gripping her wrists. She would try to fight her way out, but he was not worried. Besides, he would let her go... once Marvel arrived.
And sure enough, Billy had heard the thunder, had seen the lightning, and knew at once it wasn't Mary or Freddy. It had to be Black Adam. So he flew toward the former Champion of Shazam, his gaze serious.
"Let her go, Adam!" Billy ordered, while they floated several hundred feet in the air. Black Adam gave a malicious grin.
"Very poor choice of words..." he said, and then he released Zatanna, allowing her to free-fall through the air. Then he sped to Billy and tried to punch him, but the younger Champion was too fast, dodging and speeding toward Zee, catching her in his arms.

"Oh, Jesus," Zatanna breathed, wrapping her arms tightly around the Captain's neck on pure reflex and squeezing her eyes shut. Her wrists felt bruised, possibly even sprained from being held so tightly, and her heart was thudding away in her chest at such a speed that she thought it might burst. It was too much. On top of the very disturbing incident on the satellite, the time pocket, and everything else, it was just too much, and far too quickly. "I need a vacation," she mumbled, mostly to herself. She wasn't up to casting right then.

Billy didn't say anything, didn't feel any pain as Zee wrapped her arms around his neck, he just kept flying. And Black Adam was following him.
"SHAZAM!" Billy cried, and the lightning bolt came down, though Billy was moving too quickly for it to hit him. He was hoping it would hit Black Adam instead, but it missed. So he tried again, and again, until he finally managed to hit Adam with his fourth lightning bolt. The villain went crashing to the ground, but Billy didn't stop. He just kept going as fast as he could without hurting Zatanna.

In the middle of a street rarely frequented at night, but heavily used in the day, two bodies were left. They were known drug dealers. They were leaning against a mailbox, rigor mortis holding them in place. Their throats were both slashed open, and one had a crack pipe in his mouth. The other had a lighter in his hand, which was resting on top of the mailbox, as if he was about to help his 'buddy' light up.
