Their lack of forestry and trees befuddled me; I could not imagine how they managed to hunt in the open! However, they were quite content with it, and thus StormClan left them to it.
My eyes flicked back to Rustdawn, Whisperwind, and Dawnsky. A little purr rose in my throat momentarily as I silently listened to Whisperwind and Rustdawn chatting. I could sense the sweet tinge to their conversation; Whisperwind likely held feelings for him. But Rustdawn himself? I wasn't sure. I knew he had dedicated his name to Dawnsky, his not-so-secret love interest, but now...?
Well, time would tell.]
"Once we refresh the marker, we can head home." I said crisply, looking pointedly at Rustdawn since he was the sole male in our patrol.
While I waited for Rustdawn to finish refreshing the marker, I turned to Whisperwind I asked cheerfully, "How have you been lately, Whisperwind?"

Has a crush on: Dawnsky? Or Whisperwind? [Rustdawn padded after Thunderflight, not quite beside Dawnsky. Who would he choose? Dawnsky, bubbly, fun, cute, beautiful, sweet.... Whisperwind, sweet, shy, gentle..... He let out a soft growl of frustration. How did he get himself into this position? All he did was speak with Whisperwind to try and make conversation because she seemed lonely... And now? He was confused. Rustdawn huffed and blinked in surprise as he saw Thunderflight looking at him. Flicking his ears and nodding, he padded to the marker to refresh it. It was weird, being the only tom in the patrol. Not weird as in uncomfortable or anything. But weird, like... Well, weird. Rustdawn shook his head and looked up when he heard Thunderflight talk to Whisperwind. That was good. It would be good for the silvery she-cat to talk to others. It was nice that she opened up to him though. It made him feel important. Rustdawn sighed and flopped down on his rump, he would let them converse a little before announcing that he was done with the marker.] ↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪     The earth can be a heavy ride XXXXXXXXX When the clouds are in your eyes XXXXXX But I feel a calling

[I sat down and curled my tail around my paws as I listened to Rustdawn and Whisperwind. That Rustdawn, always wanting to include everyone. It was really sweet of him to talk to her. I would have, but I didn't know what to say to her. I could have complimented her on her fur. She was a really pretty she-cat. I could have asked her about my sister's kits. All these things I think of now. Now that she is talking with someone else.]
[I jerked my head to the two warriors. Did Rustdawn just say she had pretty eyes? I turned my head away again and chuckled nervously to myself. Why did it matter. So what if he liked her. We were best friends. That's what we were.... So why did I get a feeling in my stomach when I thought of them together? I sighed. It was clear that Whisperwind liked him. Who wouldn't. Maybe Rustdawn didn't like me...]
[I sighed and stood up as Thunderflight announced that we were moving on. Tail swishing behind me. I padded after our deputy.]

[I looked at my paws as I padded in, but when I did look up. Rustdawn was a few pawsteps in front of me. I sighed and looked back down. Why did I all of a sudden have these weird feelings just because my best friend liked someone? It was unfair. I had never had these feelings before. I mean, when I was a kit, I had a crush on Oaktail. But that was different. It was a kit-infatuation. It didn't matter. This feeling, I didn't like it. It was annoying and I was going to make it go away.]
[As Rustdawn sat down. I stood up and padded over to him. Returning the poke he had given me.] "Heya." [I meowed softly. It was weird. I wasn't so energetic anymore. Which was weird because I was always energetic. I liked it that way. I felt happy and It was me. Being an energetic cat was who I was. So... Where did all the energy go?]
[I sat down and let my thoughts carry me away] What is that feeling anyways? Let's see. I get it when It seems like he likes someone... [I let myself ponder on the feeling.] Do I like him? [Of course I did. He was my best friend... I blinked my multicolored pools with realization. Protective. That was what I was. I was protective. But why? He could take care of himself.]

Whisperwind Crush: Rustdawn / Personality: Sweet, Shy, Kind, Quiet / Fears: Wolves, Nighttime, Bloodspill / Clan: StormClan I KNOW THEY SAY, YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN I JUST HAD TO COME BACK ONE LAST TIME THESE HANDPRINTS ON THE FRONT STEPS ARE MINE UP THOSE STAIRS IN THAT LITTLE BACK BEDROOM IS WHERE I DID MY HOMEWORK AND LEARNED TO PLAY GUITAR AND I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW UNDER THAT LIVE OAK MY FAVIORITEDOG IS BURIED IN THE YARD Whisperwind walked to the border. She smiled softly as she realized. Rustdawn was the only Tom in the patrol. A soft chuckle of laughter echoed in her head. And as she saw Dawnsky coversing with Rustdawn something strange echoed in her heart and her body. She tried to ignore it. And looked at Thunderflight as the she-cat tried to converse with her. She opened up to Thunderflight just slightly. "I am good Thunderflight, I have made new friend." She said happily. Closing her eye's for a second like all cat's do when their happy. She blinked her large blue orbs open. Her muscles rippling as she shifted her torso. Leaning onto her left side more than her right. "I presume you are well? How are your kit's?" She asked. Looking at Rustdawn in the eye's for a quick moment. Before returning her attention to Thunderflight, a echo of nervousness passed through her gaze before disappearing. THOUGHT IF I COULD TOUCH THIS PLACE OR FEEL IT THIS BROKENNESS INSIDE ME MIGHT START HEALIN' OUT HERE IT'S LIKE I'M SOMEONE ELSE THOUGHT THAT MAYBE I COULD FIND MYSELF

Won't happen again" [I meowed and stood up. I padded to the spot beside him and sat down again. "My kittens are well, thank you," I said warmly. "Every day they seem more energetic than the last. I am grateful to the Clan for understanding my position as queen and deputy..this is my first patrol in two moons, you know."
[A soft look came over my eyes as I glanced at Whisperwind. Being an older she-cat, and a queen at that, I could sense the tension between the trio of cats with me. I had no idea such feelings existed between the three, and perhaps choosing them was a bad idea...I'd feel guilty if I instigated something unhappy, whether by accident or not.
At any rate, situations like this were certainly unpredictable. A tom's heart was fickle, and a she-cat's even more so. Time would tell, time would tell. It always did.]
I realized then that Rustdawn had finished and stood, nodding to the others.]
"We can report to Silverstar that all is quiet and well," I said swiftly, glancing at the three cats with a knowing look, amusement twinkling in my eyes. "We can head home now."
[I nodded to them and led the way home, strolling swiftly yet casually through the forest.]
As we traveled home, I commented cheerfully, "There's nothing like walking through the forest on a beautiful day!"

Although, I do not know about what."Whisperwind spoke to him. And she looked over at Dawnsky. "Hello Dawnsky!" She said cheerfully. Something strange churning inside of her. Which she believed was nervousness, fear. Something along those lines. "Well I assume we better get going" She said, and looked back over her shoulder at Thunderflight. Thunderflight... She's like my Hero. She thought to herself. Then returned her gaze back to Rustdawn. She was confused about her feelings for the Tom, she really had never loved anyone and the feeling felt very strange to her. As if when the Tom talked to her, Whisperwind's heart would lurch out of her chest. [He chuckled as she was brought out of her thoughts.] "Don't worry about it" [Rustdawn meowed slowly.] "We all get los--" [He broke off when she nibbled at his ear] "Hey!" [He said and shot forward to tackle her.] "You apologize right now miss snowy-paws!" [Rustdawn said and tried to shove her face in the ground.]
[The young warrior shot up and jumped off of Dawnsky with embarrassment. He didn't miss the knowing look in Thunderflight's eyes. With that thought, he tilted his head curiously. Would she be able to help him? This was an interesting thought. Turning his head to Whisperwind, he felt himself grow warm at her comment. She just called him cute. Two compliments in one day! That was more than he'd gotten in a moon. Rustdawn flicked his ears and stood up properly.] "Yeah... We... should... uh.... Go back now" [And with that, he sprinted off after Thunderflight] "Thunderflight?" "Of course, Rustdawn," I said, slightly surprised. Turning to the other two she-cats, I said quickly, "Rustdawn and I are going to stay behind. Why don't you two head back to the camp and we'll follow up?"
[It had been a question but it was spoken with an air of authority- I was not so much asking them as telling them.
As they disappeared in the undergrowth ahead of us, I returned attention to Rustdawn, slowing to a stop.]
"What did you want to talk about?" I asked curiously, twitching my whiskers.

[He took in a breath and opened his jaws to begin.] "Well.... Have you ever really. And great Starclan I do mean REALLY. Liked someone. And then all of a sudden someone else comes and compliments you and makes you feel important. Not that thus other one didn't, she'd make you feel very important. With her soft white fur and beautiful eyes and bubbly..." [Rustdawn rambled on and on before realizing that, and coming to a halt in his words. Coughing, he continued.] "And then.... You start feeling really weird and..." [He let out a sigh and looked at Thunderflight.] "I'm so confused! And I would have waited until I got to camp to talk to a tom about it.... But I can't. I can't wait that long. I'm too confused and I don't know how to... what to do..." [Rustdawn looked up in frustration] "Any ideas?" [He asked, before realizing what he had all said. He had never meant to say that much. But once he started, he couldn't stop.] I must've really wanted to talk about it. ↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪↪ The earth can be a heavy ride XXXXXXXXX When the clouds are in your eyes XXXXXX But I feel a calling

I had never been in a situation where I had to choose between two very plausible mates (rather, I was on the other spectrum, the one being debated with another), but I could sympathize with him.
I took a deep breath, thinking carefully as I spoke.]
"I'll be honest with you, Rustdawn," I said carefully, "I've never had to choose between two. Rather, I fell most wildly in love for one. Most warriors know very well how I pined for Hawkblaze, but in the end I was rejected."
[I paused, glancing away as old feelings bubbled forth, but they were faded, dulled by the fiery love I now had for Whisperblade. Still, it was a strange feeling to experience feelings that seemed to belong to another cat from far, far away in the past...]
Clearing my thoughts, I continued, "Rejection is like white-hot fire in your heart, but it does heal. Look at me now; I have a wonderful life with Whisperblade, and I don't regret any decisions I made before. Life does move on. So while you do need to be very careful about this, you must always know that she-cats can heal."
[I hesitated again, knowing that now I had to be very, very careful with what I said.]
"But you do have to choose. And it can be most painful when the two are so very warm to you. I cannot tell you what should weigh your decision; how strongly you love her, how she might treat you, how being mates with her will be like.
You must always remember, however, that where the one will be your mate, the other won't. And if they are forgiving enough, the one who isn't won't hold you against it."
I blinked at him kindly, adding, "Whoever you choose, Rustdawn, will be a lucky she-cat. You are a good warrior with kind intentions. But I cannot help you any more. It is your decision to make, not mine."
[I flicked my ears, watching him closely. I wonder what it is like to have to choose? I thought. I know well what it is like to wait, to pine...but not to choose between two.
What if Whisperblade had been born in StormClan? What if he and Hawkblaze had existed at the same time in my life? Hawkpaw and Whisperpaw. Who would I have chosen?
The idea deeply troubled me. I should have immediately stated I would choose Whisperblade, but the reality was, when I thought hard enough about who I would choose...
I couldn't say.
I couldn't say if I could choose Whisperblade over Hawkblaze.
The idea startled me. Sure, I generally disliked Hawkblaze now for stringing me along and being too ambiguous, but I could still remember how I felt for him in the early stages of our lives.
I could still feel that. Shouldn't that have died by now?
Could it be possible that...
No! I immediately stated, trying to muffle the statement from surfacing. No! Don't think like that!
I quickly averted my attention to Rustdawn, trying not to let my fur rise. Don't think about it...just don't think about it and it won't ever have happened.]

If it was his choice, he would have kept everything inside, but his heart would have exploded if he would have done that. Rustdawn sighed and rested his eyes on Thunderflight as she began to speak. Honest with him? His eyes glowed, that was what he wanted. Maybe she could tell him how to choose! Rustdawn nodded slowly as she spoke of Hawkblaze. He knew who that was, but he didn't really know the story of Hawkblaze and Thunderflight. Why would he, he was either not born yet, or just a kit when it unfolded. And the only thing he remembered from his kithood, was trying to fight off the badgers while Thunderflight kept bringing him back to where the other kits were. He wondered briefly if Thunderflight remembered that.]
[The young warrior coughed and listened when she started up again. He nodded again. She had a point, she was beautifully happy now. It was a relief to know that it healed. But the thing was, if he chose Dawnsky. Then Whisperwind might go back into her little shyness. Rustdawn felt his eyes drop in disappointment. She couldn't tell him how to choose? He looked up again. She made good points though. He would take those into thought. He really hoped that the other wouldn't hold it against him.]
[Rustdawn flicked his ears and looked down at her compliment.] "Thank you Thunderflight..." [He whispered. The young tabby sighed and thought for a moment, the battle clearly showing in his eyes. Shaking his head, he looked up again. Rustdawn tilted his head as he saw her watching him. What was she waiting for?] "Thunderflight?" "Yes yes I'm fine," I said instantly, twitching my ears.
I flicked my tail over his back comfortingly and added, "Whatever happens, don't blame yourself for the result. It's up to the she-cat to respect your decision and move on with life. And don't, whatever you do, drag it out. You don't have to decide now, but you can't ignore it forever. That's what really hurts a she-cat."
A sad look crossed my eyes as I whispered, "Trust me."
[I shook my fur suddenly, my face changing back to its cheerful look. I twitched my whiskers and glanced back out into the forest, eager to return to my kittens.]
"Alright, we can head back now," I said. "I'll always be willing to talk with you if you ever need me, okay?"
[I gave him a swift lick on his head before leading the way back home.
Before I had been a queen, I had always pined for kittens and often visited the nursery. I regarded Rustdawn, as I regarded most of the younger warriors who were kittens during my early warriorhood, as one of my kin, if not one of my own children. Although I had hardly seen anyone since retreating to the nursery, it felt nice to become part of their lives again.
Honestly, I had always thought Rustdawn would choose Dawnsky. He had been smitten for her for so long...but life and love were fickle. Sometimes, strangers suddenly became captivating and stole your heart away...]
