The death toll for Japan is already over a thousand, several more are injured or missing. To be honest, I really think they got off pretty lucky. All of Japan's buildings are made to withstand some of the harshest earthquakes & they're more well prepared for tsunamis than any other coastal country in the world. Think about it, if that had happen in any other region the devastation would have been a hundred times worse.
About the nuclear power plants, America has already sent cool-en to help Japan get their single power plant under control. From what I understand, only one of the power plants suffered damage to its cooling system & caught fire. The news is saying that its under control for now but its still considered a risk for radiation leaking, which is one of the main reasons why the US of A is helping them get the situation under control. Most of Japan is powered by nuclear power, so if the plants become unusable they'll suffer severely from a lack of power... & from radiation. Personally, its my belief that the power plant is the worst of their worries. Japan is known to have a very fast bounce back after natural disasters.

They had like a mini-tsunami. Something like 30-40ft waves? Not sure on the details but when he wakes up I'll prolly find out, haha.

The news is saying this will probably boost up their economy even... and the world stock. I don't think there are 1000 deaths, there are about 200 confirmed, a lot of missing and injured people. I can't remember the exact numbers that the news said. Looking at Japan as a whole, I guess its better since they are more prepared.. but looking at them as human beings... it totally sucks sad people are dead...and lives ruined.

That's terrible... My area got off easy, but a high school not far from my place got trashed. :O Mother Nature really likes to dump crap on us, doesn't she? (Though some could argue that we did even worse to the evnironment i guess)

I think my school id going to raise some funds for them

I'm seeing on CNN that 900+ people have already been confirmed dead as of this morning, & over 10,000 are missing, according to New York news articles. I'm not saying that Japan isn't going to need any help after this disaster, but they are much better off than Maryland state would have been if something like that had happened. I'm really happy that the US & a couple of other countries are helping them out, at least with the search & rescue operations.
Japan is going to have one hell of an issue dealing with the nuclear power plants though. There are five of those things being shut down because of damages, one because it was set on fire, & several others because cooling systems were heavily damaged. In fact, they're using sea water to help cool the plants, & handing out Iodine pills & masks to help people stave off any possible affects from the nuclear leaks, while evacuating people as far away from those plants as they can manage. Japan is screwed if those plants don't get under control soon. I can't even imagine the panic that would happen there when survivors find themselves without any power. The earthquake's scare, the flooding, & the cold are enough to kill people without adding the threat of no electricity or form of contact with other survivors in the region.
