If a soldier is gay, so be it.
I am a combat arms Soldier, 19D. I've worked with a lot of people in my unit for the last five years, some of which i believe were gay. A gay person keeps his private life private, much the same way i do, then we're fine. I don't care whether one of my soldiers is gay, muslim, or what have you, be it race, creed, religion, the whole nine yards, so long as it in NO way affects his ability to work.
That said, if i catch him checkin me out in the shower, it would really wierd me out. Same thing wierds me out froma straight guy.
There is still a lot of work that needs to be done with this. You can be a roommate with a gay, and there is nothing you can do about it under current policy. Should there be separate showers? Should people who are wholly against homosexuality be allowed to get out as homosexuals are allowed to get in?
We get to take the fun ride and sit back while our leaders figure this mess out. it worked out just fine with the brits, and i think we'll do just fine too.
