With the New Year coming up, I figured I'd ask do any of you do anything special for New Years?
My family has a tradition of always serving boiled cabbage and black eye peas. Cabbage is supposed to attract money and black eye peas are supposed to bring luck. I get the cabbage reference for the money but I still don't get the black eye peas thing and apparently this tradition has been going on for so long that my grandmother doesn't know why black eye peas are supposed to bring luck.

I've heard of that tradition too, however I don't know the reason behind it either, nor does my family practice it.
I have read of traditions that usually fall to Christmas or New Years where a coin or bay leaf is baked into some bread or cake and whoever ends up with the piece containing it is said to have good luck for the year to come.
Our only New Years tradition is to snack all night, get drunk on as much liquor as possible and cheat at cards till midnight. (you can actually get yelled at for NOT cheating). Then we watch the ball drop, have some coffee and wander off to bed or to our homes.

Oh I forgot about the fireworks and stories/gossip around the bonfires. Beer and hard liquor were a given I thought but yeah I forget some areas aren't as liberal with alcohol as SE Louisiana is.

I would love to have a bonfire, but in Michigan during midwinter it is not such a great idea, especially with a 5 year old who turns blue after 15 minutes of sledding.
Fireworks, I completely forgot about the fireworks. Our neighbor sets them off every year at midnight, and we watch them from our living room window after we finish laughing at the cats that have run for cover.

When I lived back in my old town, I would have all of my friends over at my house and we would stay up all night and talk about all of the funny things that happened in the past. We'd write up our resolutions for the new year and eat and drink lots of goodies.
This year I dunno, I think it will be just my parents and younger sibling chilling out at home. Nothing special.

While since my family moved this year, it's been big on new traditions, luckily our New Years Eve tradition of being bored and eating junk food is the same. smile
We usually watch the ball drop, but we got rid of TV, so that's out now.

Well, I have always stayed up to watch the ball "drop" on TV, with my family. But this year I am cooking salmon as a special dinner and we are going to stay up to watch the ball. I'm thinking of keeping a tradition of a special home cooked meal and staying up together.
