Stoloth was feeling quite upset today. His hide had just been oiled and he had been left outside while T'go went in for lunch. This routine had been going on for some time now, ever since Stoloth became too big to fit inside the weyr. He was in fact larger than a green and still growing. This didn't suit him at all.

Maybe he should have been born a green or something. He just didn't feel comfortable being this conspicuous. To make matters worse, everywhere he went he worried about taking up too much space, getting in someone's way, or worse, accidentally stepping on them. T'go, who was used to feeling awkward in his own skin, reassured Stoloth that he would get used to being big, but so far it simply wasn't working. Most of all he missed going everywhere with His. He still felt T'go's presense - even now he could taste what His was eating - but he missed the things he couldn't experience through their telepathic link, like T'go's stutter.

To make himself feel better, Stoloth walked along the grassy meadow where he and His would go to get away from it all. The meadow seemed much smaller now. That was depressing, too.

It was the hot part of the day, and with the days growing short, the heat offered by the peaking sun was precious. Most of the dragons, especially the older ones less fascinated by the new clutch that was starting to practice flying, were taking advantage of the brief heat of the day. Yvoth, however, had just dived into the lake on a whim, and preferred stirring the blood herself to waiting for it to slowly simmer while lying on some rock. She swooped and swirled in the air, her wings snarling deftly in the air like her rider’s tight fingers, using her dainty size and maneuverability to carve out dense patterns in the air. At last she scooped herself all together and fell – only to boom her wings before reaching full velocity. From there, panting with effort, she spiraled downward, craning her neck to find some familiar wing pattern of a friendly dragon to land by and gossip with. She needed a break from the air, but those whose shapes she recognized looked too asleep to disturb and – there! – there was a brown – one from the clutch earlier. She remembered in a dim draconic way having played with some of them as little ones, teaching them games, but besides that she hadn’t spoken to them much.

Now she stooped and angled her glide so it ended parallel with the brown. She gave a burbling, soft trumpet of greeting, and landed with a skip-hop out to his left. She raised her front foot, toes curling happily. I thought you looked a little lonely from up above, so I thought I would come and say hello. I am Yvoth.

Stoloth had stopped to watch the swooping green with a deep feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach. Watching the smaller colors fly through the air like acrobats always made him a little uneasy, especially now that others in his clutch were beginning to practice their flying. Stoloth was much more reluctant. Oh, he joined in here and there, flapping his wings and gliding a little to satisfy his peers, but he really didn't enjoy the sensation of having his feet off the ground yet. Some part of him longed for the air under his wings, but the thinking part of his brain was sober to the dangers of flying.

He turned to face the cheerful green as she landed. "That's nice of you," he cooed, happy for her company. "Mine left me out here to eat lunch with the others in the dining hall. My name is Stoloth."

Good to meet you, Stoloth. She repeated the name mostly to help herself. She remembered dragons all rather specifically, but her memory sometimes seemed exceptionally bad, even for a green, and trying to recall names left her with a sentence full of ‘umm’s. She didn’t even try and keep up with riders anymore. Do you remember going inside to watch yours eat? I think I do sometimes. Now that’s only in our weyr. She tilted her head dreamily.

"Yes. That's what makes it so frusterating." Stoloth sat down and shifted his front legs restlessly. He titled his head at Yvoth. "Who is Yours?"

K’la, of the Ladrear family at Lemos Hold. Yvoth had no specific memory of the Ladrear family or Lemos of her own, but that was the way Her’s tended to introduce herself. She’s very kind and affectionate. She has a son too, K’day. He Impressed Ninaeth at the queen’s last hatching. She tilted her head thoughtfully at the brown, realizing his relative youth. I think he hatched with you?

"Blue Ninaeth? Yes, I think so." What little memories he still possessed of his hatching were fuzzy. He remembered strong feelings of apprehension followed by relief and joy at finding His in the back of the crowd of boys. So the son of Yvoth's rider Impressed one of his brothers. Interesting.

He tilted his head inquiringly at Yvoth. "Mine is called T'go. Simply T'go. What is the..." He looked away for a second, trying to get this right. "... the Ladrear family at Lemos Hold? Is that important? You make it sound important."

Yvoth forgot the name of Stoloth’s rider almost immediately in lieu of the next question. She had to concentrate a bit to remember what was important about it. It’s Mine’s bloodline. The Ladrears are… um, nobles. They run things. I think like the weyrwoman here does. K’la knows all their names and writes to them sometimes, but I don’t pay them much attention. It seems fairly exhaustive to keep up with. Does yours talk about his old family much?

"All the time. Mine misses his family on the farm." T'go always said that this meadow was a lot like the meadow near his farm where he would hunt for ancient craft. Sometimes he and His would walk through the field hunting for ancient craft as if T'go was home with his family. Even though they never found anything, T'go seemed to enjoy these walks for reasons incomprehensible to Stoloth. "Have you been on many missions? What is it like?"

Yvoth rumbled, the draconic equivalent of a nod of understanding. She knew she had a short memory, somewhat short even from a green, but she would never feel bad about it. Whenever Hers sat around and remembered things too much, she almost always inevitably became sad. No, Yvoth was in no way jealous of those (especially humans’) ability to remember and reminisce. The present was a fine thing and promised no regrets. Oh, Missions! She rustled her wings in some excitement at the mention of it and she began to chatter. Bronzes get very serious about them, and sometimes browns like you, but it’s normally quite entertaining. Usually we’re scouting or going to visit holds so our riders can talk with someone there. Holds are noisy, fun to investigate, and there’s ways children that like to come out and watch me. They’ll watch you too when you go. They can be fun to play with if they’re not too scared. If you stay still, one might come up and try to touch you. They’re so nervous about it! She sounded amused at that. As if a dragon would hurt them in any way!
