Here's a question for my friends across the pond. Does England require you to take a foreign language? If so, can you choose or do they have a second language you must learn in school?

A friend and I were debating what the United States second language should be. I say Spanish but she says French. Currently, the US only requires school kids to take two years of any foreign language of their choice and then they're done. What does England do?

I think it's compulsory to study a second language for the first 2 years of senior school here but hell, it's been nearly 20 years since I was there xd

I think most schools do German or French, my school did French for everyone and Spanish for the top set students. I studied both for 5 years. I learned a lot of French when I was wee small cause my parents had friends who lived in the south of France and we went there every year on holiday but for sme reason I remember more Spanish.

Yeah, it's been over 20 years since I was there. It all started when another friend and I decided we were going to take Spanish classes together in 2011. It'll be her first time learning it. I used to be fluent but didn't use it so I'm not so fluent anymore. xd That's when another friend chimed in about French and well, somehow it got to what does England do. blaugh

Again been a while but i know where i went to secondary school we had to take a foreign language for the first 3 years we did german and french and i did both for 3 yr (its now changed tha you choose jus one for the first 3 years after the first term i think) and then when you get to ya gcses (4th and 5th yr at secondary school) they recommend you take a foreign language but its not compulsory.. they jus kinda make it sound compulsory where i was at school stare

and i'd love to learn french or spanish... i'm jus not ver good at learnin foreign languages sad

In the US, it seems to vary from state to state. When I was in grade school I was taught Sign Language and later Spanish (failed it miserably), to graduate high school, 1 year of a foreign language of our choice, I took French. The in College there's a Speech requirement, 4 credits, Speech and usually a Foreign language, I took Japanese, but it didn't count. Funny, I don't remember what I ended up taking that met the credits.....

Most of the schools around here are teaching Spanish early in the school kids, preschool if they can

I may be in the United States, not England, but I had to take three years, not two years, of a foreign language in high school. I took Spanish because, being in a state with a large Spanish-speaking population, I figured it'd be practical.

Well, I just assumed the US has the 2 year requirement since I went to two different high schools and they both did. One was in Alaska and one was in Ohio. In Alaska, I had a wide variety of languages I could choose from. There was Latin, Spanish, French, German and Russian. My plan was to take 4 years of Spanish and 2 years of Russian but I moved. In Ohio, I only had the choice of Spanish. I was bummed.
