Caspian paced back and forth, back and forth in the sand, leaving an increasingly-deeper rut in his path. He hadn't seen his mate since yesterday morning, and he'd only run into a dead end trail when he went looking. This was the last pace he'd checked--the small little section of beach that through unspoken agreements with the tribe had become their private place.

Where was she? She wasn't by the fresh water, she wasn't with anyone in the family, she wasn't with Ianthe and her kids (an accidental breeding with the Kousetsu Elder, what the hell), and it wasn't like her to just up and swim to the mainland...so where was she?

Caspian grunted in frustration and flopped over in the tide, letting the salt water rise up over his paws when each wave hit. What was he so busy freaking out about? She could handle herself, it wasn't like he was always with her every second of every day. But he could just tell that something was up, and it was making not-good butterflies pound against his stomach. What could be so damn wrong? Ianthe was back, things were supposed to be good again.

Biting his lip sullenly, Caspian buried his nose between his paws and let his hair flop in his eyes while he waited for her to miraculously show up.

User Image It wasn't that Marina was avoiding her mate, really. She was far too old for that, these days; she had just needed a bit of time to think.

During that time, she'd realized that somewhere along the way, she'd begun to think that she was too old for a lot of things. She was apparently mistaken, as she was--somehow--pregnant. Again.

After a day or two of her avoidance of the issue followed by Serious Thinking, Marina knew that her mate deserved to know what was up. She was too old to be so childish with him.

As she rounded the bend to their private, almost-untouched section of the beach, she realized that no matter how old they got, Caspian would always be a sulker.

"Why so sad?" Marina called softly, a faint smile lighting her face as she made her way over to him. "Has someone been picking on you again?" Marina teased to hide her inexplicable nervousness. "Poor baby," she finished as she leaned over to n** his ear affectionately. He was probably just worried about her, the goofus.

Caspian flicked an ear and looked up as he heard Marina talking. Rather than actually listening to her teasing, the black gold male smiled in relief. The logical part ofchim had known she was okay, but it was still good to have that confirmed.

"No one I couldn't beat into the sand," he chuffed back, wrinkling his nose lightly at the unexpected ear nipping. He was physically tougher than he used to be; he needed to be to beat into a bloody pulp anyone that touched his children.

He pulled his ears back and scowled; like that damn Modidaeva that went for his daughter and then left her. If it weren't for the size difference, he would have had that b*****d's throat months ago. But now wasn't the time to remember that; Marina was here.

"What's wrong is that you disappeared on me," he said. "And it felt like something was wrong."

Yep, he was just worried about her, like Marina had thought. She supposed that was what happened when you were mated to someone for as long as they had been--even when nothing was wrong, sometimes it felt like there was.

"Sorry," Marina applied, offering a weak sheepish smile as she lay down next to him; she chose to ignore the scowl that had crossed over his face a moment before; there would be time to ask about that later.

"And...nothing's wrong, per se," Marina began, taking a deep breath. She glanced out at the ocea while she gathered her thoughts. Hm, how to say it. She could gently lead into it, she could let him figure it out, she could--

"I'm pregnant. Again." Or she could just blurt it out! What was the matter with her! Groaning lightly, Marina buried her nose between her paws and didn't dare peek up at him, not wanting to see the not-smile that was probably on his face. "Sorry," she added, her voice muffled by the sand. What was she even apologizing for? For telling him like that or for being pregnant? She wished she knew.

Caspian blinked dumbly at Marina when she blurted out that she was...pregnant? What..but..when...oh. Then. Well.

The gold and black male was by far older than last time, and more able to handle the news. He leaned down and nuzzled behind Marina's ear. "We'', we've done it before," he told her. "And it's not like we're ancient and rotting away. We'll do it right again this time."

And this time no damn Modidaevas would be getting near his children.

"How far along?"

Marina took a deep breath and nodded mutely in agreement; it's not like they were bad parents--their children had all grown up fine...

...Except for Levi.

Choking back the tears that threatened to leak out at the thought of her missing son, Marina offered her mate a small smile.

"Just a few weeks, I think," she said, tail wrapping around her paws gently. "I'm hardly even showing yet, but I know the signs. The only other people who probably can tell are the other Carers. And Ianthe, of course," speaking of whom, she should probably tell her Elder that she was expecting...

Later. Now was a time for her and Caspian, and Ianthe would understand that.

"You're happy, right?"

"Of course I'm happy," Caspian assured her, curling his body protectively around hers. "I miss the children as kits. It'll be nice to have more around." Another handful...they were well on their way to being some of the parents with the most children.

"And they'll be perfect, because they're ours." He could tell she was thinking about Levi, and Caspian nosed her soothingly. He knew that wherever Levi was, he was safe. Their Deity would protect him, and he was smart. Still, no matter what Caspian believed --that Leviathan had wandered off to find himself and his independence--he couldn't quite convince Marina of the same.

"A few weeks. They'll be here sooner than we think."
