I'm kinda considering quitting... sweatdrop The guild's slow, but even when it's not it seems like most debates aren't really civil, but are more 'who can prove the other wrong?' Besides that, I feel like I fail as a debater, and college is both sucking up all my free time, and is showing me how much I need to learn.

I'm just reluctant to quit because I really do like most of you, I do learn a lot here, and I've spent a lot of time on this guild... So basically I'm either going to stay or leave based on this topic.

Well, I wish I could be one that encourages you to stay but many debates on here are pretty informal or just formless. That's somewhat bothered me. At the same time I can't expect everyone to know how to debate.

Lots of guilds lately are pretty slow. I think part of it stems from how most of us have lives outside of gaia.

So the ball is ultimately in your park.

The guild is slow for a few reasons...
There's only so many big issues on the subject and they've all been debated to death. The further you go on the fringes, the less people know about the subject, the less passionate people are, and the less people have to contribute to the conversation...
And then there's the fact that most of the people who are interested in the subject and want to join the guild already have, rather they've tracked us down or been invited since the start.

So I don't know what to tell you. It's really up to you. You could do what most people do and stay a member of the guild and check in once in a while and comment when you're interested. There's no quota you have to fill without being booted or anything.
Or if you want the guild to be more busy, you could always invite friends who you think would be interested, on Gaia or otherwise, to join to get new blood in the guild.
And as far as more interesting topics, don't hesitate to post something you find interesting and ask questions.

But other than that, whether you want to stay or quit is up to you.

I do feel that some people here, mostly noobs, feel that debating is trying to disprove the other side by whatever means. They do not take in to consideration the POV of anyone else. They only listen to their own reason and most of the time end the thread because people can no longer discuss without a certain person jumping in and trolling.
I know a few of my points are not the most valid, but I do try. And I try not to be disrespectful.

'who can prove the other wrong?'

Isn't that kind of the point of debating stuff? razz

I have always seen debating as a way to better understand opposing sides and increase knowledge. Not to start this whole "I'm right you're wrong, here's why! So in your face." That's not a very contrusctive debate/discussion.

Exactally. That just makes it a childish arguement.

Do as You may.

A lot of Guilds has been slow lately (The last months), seemingly independent on topic.

Civility is whole other issue. I agree there's a lack of that sometimes. But debating is essentially "I'm right/you're wrong, here's why, please comment." Which the same, just with less rudeness.
It's called debate for a reason. It's not just "sharing opinions", it's an active dialogue primarily based on a disagreement.

But, again, that's no reason for not being civil.

Summer's over, so there's been a slowdown across the board. I'd just chill, float for a while until it looks like there's something you want to jump in. That's what I've been doing.

It's not my decision whether you stay or go, that's yours.
However, you confuse me with your definition of a "civil debate".
I have only seen a few uncivil debates and that was once with me and few other times I have seen something. It's been rare, though.
I'm off topic though. I was trying to say that a debate is usually saying some is wrong, saying you are right, and giving examples and reasons as to why to see if your the winning runner of the race. IF THAT is an uncivil debate then by god we have all done it. Every, last, one of us.
Now, denying proof given to a topic or acting snotty is another thing, but I digress.

Point being, do as you please. However, don't just leave because you think a few members are jerks. It's a debate guild, people disagree and talk about things on different sides. That doesn't make us enemies.
*Although that doesn't make us friends either.*

Well, all the guilds that I mod in or own are slow or dead right now, it's all a part of back-to-school/college. It will be slow until after Halloween and then the end of the year breaks will start, the majority of the people wilol be in the middle of weather too cold to do much out of the house, and people will be fully back into the groove of the school year. Just be patient about the slow thing. You yourself are dealing with school, but just wait, you'll get bored again and find more time for here.

As for the uncivil thing, ehhh, you find it anywhere, even in real life when you are on the opposite side of an issue someone feels vehement about. Just look at people's harsh responses here as strength training for RL, you know, practice. Besides, real debate isn't about proving or disproving beliefs, it is about learning to see other people's points of view, and hopefully finding some common ground.

Agreed, which is why I said that a debate is bring two or more opposing sides together, otherwise you don't have a good debate. Yes civility is a must otherwise the topic goes no where and ends up being childish like Aakosir said.
