Modern medicine may not be perfect (no form of medicine is) but it does have a pretty good track record.

Track records are created by the media and academia.

Here's some of my better experiences with modern medicine:

>they applied a cast after a ski accident (although I was the one who had to point out the fracture in the X-RAY because they missed it)

>I had a wonderful experience getting my wisdom teeth pulled, was on three different drugs including gas, woke up under a snug blanket frying balls on said drugs, was given a flower and a T shirt.

>I received a "donut" scan and and an opiate drip when I had kidney stones (of course I had to wait several hours in horrible agony for someone to bother checking and the ambulance ride was a nightmare)

That about sums up my positive experiences. I've had so many bad experiences to enumerate them would be a waste of space, although I can say my worst experiences are so horrible they belong in a movie.

My point? I suppose the only thing good about modern medicine is opium and bone setting - two things that existed before medicine was modern. Even the 16th century physician Paracelsus could have administered my "best" medical experiences. That makes me sad.

Track records for things like medicine, chemistry, physics, whatever aren't determined by the experiences of one or even a few people. They are determined by the total picture and overall, modern medicine has done more good than harm. Have you ever had smallpox? Whooping cough? Measles? Have you ever lost a limb to gangrene?

Like I said, modern medicine isn't perfect and no medicine is. Sometimes no matter how well it should work it just doesn't. Sometimes people have bad experiences with medicine. It happens. But what's the alternative?
The alternative is magic...and naturalism. XD

Let me know how that works out for you.
I'd rather stick with modern day findings. Sure those old treatments sometimes did some good but modern day is based on more advanced trial and error.

What part of "this is his thread to post his information and opinions" don't you understand?

Your Mom isn't dead. That's what matters. Some people are lucky I guess, others... not so much.

Myself, I try to avoid modern medicine that I can't simply buy at a store for pain easing, and even that's rare. I try to stay healthy the regular, old fashioned way and eat right, exercise regularly, and smoke weed. XD

I do, however, smoke a ton of cigarettes, but I've not had problems with that yet, and my goal is to be done with them by the end of the year.

Nonetheless, it seems the way hospital care goes, in rating anyways, is by area. I've been to some places where the medical services are unmatched in praise & practice. Of course with every good part of something, there's a bad: some I've heard about are not so much for the positive review section.

I'm fond of home remedies and medicinal plants but sometimes that's just not enough. A lot of modern medicines are more concentrated forms of ingredients derived from medicinal plants. I'm not the biggest fan of modern medicine but I acknowledge its benefits. I've used home remedies and medicinal herbs. I've used "energy" healing. I've used antibiotics. I've had surgery. I don't think it's a matter of modern medicine vs. whatever else. I think it's a matter of using what works best for the particular situation.

Personally, I'd rather use a relatively harmless plant instead of a drug that's action isn't fully understood. I'd rather use mind over matter on pain than pop an aspirin. Sometimes you just have to have something cut out of you though. That's life and that's when modern medicine with all it's antibiotics and anesthetics and technology comes in handy.

modern medicine is good and evil

some of it is safe but people are compartmentalized, there not told what there doing is bad.

and on the other hand people arent taught the imporantace or effectivness of living a healthy life that prevents a whole Slew of badness that was invented.

if a mobster broke your leg then treated you how would that make you feel?

a recent article on CNN>VIDEO>HEALTH talks about why you shouldn't be a 'good' patient. I highly recommend it.

There's a good and bad side to everything.

If the mobster knew how to do it, then right on. Who is to say that modern Doctors weren't at one point in the Mob? Kidding, ;D

I remember reading something related to that. In the article I read the woman regenerated her finger tip. The doctors she saw at first told her to give up and wanted to amputate more of her finger.

And then the comments were full of butthurt doctors crying about how everyone should listen to what they say because they know best and being a "bad patient" is not good for everyone.

It was pretty hilarious.
