Era looked up at the sound of the door to the Team Room opening up to reveal Ethfael with a notice in his mouth. He looked at her significantly, setting it down upon the ground, and Era nodded, ”Everyone, Ethfael's brought something!” she called out to gather the others, setting down her cup of tea to head over to her co-captain as the rest of the Team began to enter slowly. ”What have you got here?” she asked him curiously, picking up the paper to read it over.
”The mission board didn't have much of interest,” he stated, ”But there was something that looked to be entertaining amongst the bounties.” Noting the presence of the rest of the Team, who by this time had all come together he turned to include them in the conversation. ”There's a rogue Alakazam stirring up trouble in the Labyrinth,” he informed them, ”So I thought we were just the ones to take care of a problem like this.”
”I'm game,” said Era, heading over and grabbing the bag. She carefully rolled up the notice and tucked it inside before heading back to stand next to Ethfael. ”Who else wants to come?”
Riley raised a cheerful paw, ”Count me in!” he said, ”I know a thing or two about tricks myself, so a labyrinth and an Alakazam sounds right up my alley.” Era nodded and Riley made his way over to her.
Sereni looked at them thoughtfully, then nodded as if agreeing with something that crossed her mind. ”Era...” she began, ushering Phione forward, ”Phione has been wanting to ask you something.”
The little Water Type fidgeted at being put in the spotlight, and Era smiled fondly at him, ”Yes Phione, what is it?”
”I...I want to come,” he replied, looking back at her. ”Please? I will help!”
Era was touched by his dedication, and smiled, inclined to allow him to come. She looked to Ethfael for confirmation and found the Dragonair regarding him closely, as if sizing him up for the task. Just then, another voice piped up, ”No fair!” Faran said, expression unhappy, ”I wanted to come this time! I’m good enough, I promise! And I won’t be any trouble, so you should take me!” Phione looked rather hurt by Faran’s protestations, but said nothing, looking instead to Era. Sereni and Erinn exchanged a nervous glance, realizing that this wouldn’t end well, and Era frowned, not wanting to say no to either of them.
Ethfael’s expression darkened and he said in a soft but deadly serious voice, ”I would like to remind you that this isn’t just a run of the mill mission. We are going to capture a dangerous criminal and it’s no place for children to be participating in!” His voice was firm and both Phione and Faran looked distraught at his words, but in all honesty Ethfael was only concerned for their safety; he didn’t want their youngest Team members getting hurt, he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself.
Era put a gentle paw on Ethfael’s side, her expression soft, ”They can’t be sheltered forever Ethfael,” she murmured, ”Eventually you have to let them grow up, and now is as good a time as ever.” The Dragonair sighed but said nothing, merely keeping his gaze on the ground.
”Wait a minute…” Faran said, ”Does that mean we can go?” He and Phione both looked at Era apprehensively, but the Pikachu smiled and nodded, giving her permission. ”Woohoo! My first mission!” Faran shouted, bouncing up and down with joy, ”We get to go teach that bad guy who’s boss!”
Phione looked at Era uncertainly, ”I…I go?” he asked.
”Yes,” Era replied, fondly patting him on the head, ”You can come too.”
Phione’s eyes shone with happiness and he hugged her tightly, ”I help! Help Era and ‘Fael!” he cheered, joining Faran in bouncing around. Era smiled slightly but felt something akin to dread at the idea of bringing the two little ones along. What were they getting themselves into?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The party ended up at the entrance to the Labyrinth very shortly, having wasted no time in getting there. Outlaws needed to be taken care of as quickly and efficiently as possible as was often taught by Officers Arcanine and Magnezone, and Era and Ethfael had taken that to heart. Faran chattered ceaselessly the entire way there, to the point that even Era was beginning to tire of the Vulpix’s commentary, and Phione was just as bubbly in actions if not words. He still struggled with language, despite having been with them for a long time, and so still preferred expressing his emotions in ways other than speech. All in all it was an arduous trip to say the least, and the three older Pokemon were relieved to arrive.
There was an ornate gate that framed the entrance to the Labyrinth, no one was there, but it was in perfect condition as if to suggest that someone or something did look over things here. Not only that, but from what they could see of the hedges that made up the lengthy maze, they were also finely clipped and kept in pristine condition as kept by some unknown gardener. It was rather offsetting to see things the way they were and no other Pokemon around, and Era felt shivers run down her spine in spite of herself. ”It’s so big!” Faran said, breaking the silence that had fallen over them, ”Have you ever seen something like that in all of your life? It must be bigger than a whole forest!”
Ethfael nodded gaze pensive, ”Yes, there are many stories of this place and its size,” he remarked, ”Tales tell of Pokemon being stuck inside the maze for years without being able to find their way out. We’re at the main entrance here, and it’s the only way in or out, although some Pokemon have claimed to have ended up in here without warning, as though something had forced them to end up there. They never recall having walked through the entrance, saying they’d wanted to stay away…” He looked onward with a piercing expression, making it look like he was looking through the hedges of the maze into its heart. ”This is no place to be trifled with,” he concluded.
Faran and Phione both looked rather spooked by Ethfael’s tale, and Riley stepped in to the kids’ rescue. ”Of course, those are just stories, and we don’t have to worry about that,” he said, ”We have our Explorer Badges if anything goes wrong, and we can always find another way back if we have too. It’s just a maze after all, it’s not like it’s alive or something.” The younger two both looked slightly relieved at Riley’s reasoning, which Ethfael didn’t choose to refute. He decided it would be best not to mention the fact that Explorer Badges wouldn’t work until after they found the Alakazam and defeated him, or the fact that this Labyrinth wasn’t exactly like your average maze…
Era was thinking along the same lines as Ethfael, but didn’t let the thought dampen her spirits, ”We’ve got an outlaw to catch everyone!” the Pikachu said brightly, ”And maze or no maze we’ll track him down and bring him to justice!” As a precaution she added, ”Make sure to stick together, we should always stay in one big group, splitting off might get some of us lost, and that wouldn’t be good at all. No matter what happens, we’re a Team, and that’s what counts!” With that, she gestured ahead toward the gate leading into the Labyrinth, and they entered together.
Once they had gone, a sharp wind blew over the area, returning the grass they had been standing on to its normal upward position, and eliminating all traces of them ever being there. If they were lost, no one would ever realize they had entered. At the center of the maze, an Alakazam tasted the breeze, a menacing smile on his face. ”We have visitors do we my pet?” he questioned. The wind picked up around him fiercely and a malevolent gleam entered his eyes, ”Excellent…”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It wasn’t long at all before the group found themselves completely and undeniably lost. The only one who seemed to have a general idea of their location was Ethfael, and even he was more uncertain than he would have liked. The hedges were high enough that even a very large Pokemon would have trouble looking over them to try and cheat in the maze. There was nary a sound save for an ever present wind stirring about them and the pad of their paws and, in Ethfael’s case, the rustle of his tail, as they moved forward through the grassy area. None of them suspected any sort of foul play such as that which was being played upon them as they traveled.
”This place is impressive,” Riley said as they came to what must have been the eighth fork in the path since they’d entered, ”Who do you think had the time to make all of this, or even thought up the idea in the first place? Somebody must have really wanted to keep something secret with a maze as complex as this one.”
Faran’s ears perked up in surprise, ”Hey! You don’t suppose there’s treasure there do you?” The Vulpix’s eyes shimmered in wonder, ”We’d be the first to ever find it! I bet there’s so much that the Guilds will reward us, and everybody will call us heroes for finding it, ‘cause nobody was ever able to find their way through before!” Faran’s tails whipped back and forth with excitement, thoroughly enchanted with the idea, and no doubt fantasizing about all the glory that they would receive.
Era laughed, ”Well, you never know,” she replied cheerily, allowing Faran to continue on with his fantasy. Obviously it wouldn’t happen, even if there were tremendous riches at the end there would be no way for them to get them back to the Guild, and if they didn’t bring them all they’d be hard pressed to make their way through this place more than once when countless other Pokemon had tried to do the same thing and failed. ”Well,” she said, pulling herself out of her thoughts, ”Which way should we go?”
Ethfael looked from right to left and back again, thinking on the question, ”Left,” he said decisively after a moment, ”If we go right we’ll be turning in a circle and will end up back at the beginning.” In theory anyway, but it was the best idea he could present. There was no other real way to tell in here which way led closer or further from the center.
”Left it is,” Era said amicably, and the group headed toward the left side of the path, leaving the fork behind quite shortly. Riley, who was walking in the back, paused a moment just before the break was out of sight, and looked back. His eyes narrowed in shock as he found himself staring down a seemingly endless path, with no sign of the divide anywhere. He turned back and hurried to catch up with the others, suspicion prickling at his fur as he returned to his spot at the back, mazes weren’t supposed to morph and change, they were stationary things. Someone clearly was messing with them, and he had no doubts as to who it might be, but he kept his thoughts to himself, not wanting to trouble Phione and Faran. He’d talk to Era or Ethfael about it whenever he got the chance.
As they progressed further along the path, the hedges began to grow more ornamental. Flowers began to deck them in many colors, and they were a lovely sight to see. Phione especially took a fascination to them and walked close to the hedges, delightedly giggling as they passed by flower after flower. ”Pretty!” he cheered, spinning around with delight. ”Pretty flowers!”
Era and Riley smiled happily as they stopped to watch Phione and Ethfael looked rather bemused as well at his antics. Since the others were distracted, Faran was the only one who noticed something strange about the flowers here. ”Ummm…Guys?” he said quietly, voice cracking, ”You might want to take a look at this… The Vulpix had backed away from the hedge with his tail between his legs, clearly frightened our of his wits.
The three older ones stepped back to try and see what it was that was frightening Faran, and what they saw sent chills down their spines as well. The flowers in the hedge formed letters, and the letters formed words which repeated in sequence over and over again: Y-O-U A-R-E N-O-T W-E-L-C-O-M-E H-E-R-E. ”Phione! Get away from there!” Ethfael shouted, but it was too late. A chorus of tittering laughter filled the air and a pair of the flowers grabbed Phione. The rest of the flowers also came out of the hedge, revealing several Roselia and a Roserade.
”Hello intruders,” the Roserade said with a smile, a powerful and sweet aroma filling the air as she came forward, ”You shouldn’t be here.” The Roselia tittered with laughter, coming in close-by the Roserade all save for the one who held Phione.
Phione looked to be close to tears, terrified that the flowers had grabbed him. Era’s fur bristled angrily and electricity sprang readily to her cheeks. ”Let Phione go,” she said, cold anger clinging to ever word. Both Faran and Phione looked shocked to hear Era talking in such a tone, having never heard her talk like that before. It sat especially badly with Faran, who whimpered a bit and stepped a bit closer to Riley for comfort, only to find that the Eevee wore an expression equally unfriendly.
The Roserade laughed, a sound that would have been sweet and charming if it weren’t for the harsh look in her eyes. ”Oh? Is this Phione something special to you?” she asked, gesturing to the Roselia that held him. The Roselia lifted its right flower up close to Phione chuckled darkly as the Water Type balked, seeing sharp thorns that decked the beautiful plant. ”Well then we’ll just have to keep it. A little something for you to think about while we punish you for trespassing .” The Roserade brandished her roses forward and the Roselia swarmed forward to attack.
On opposite sides of Ethfael, Era and Riley sprang forward in a dual Quick Attack, racing towards two of the Roselia, as synchronized as if they had planned it. Ethfael himself summoned his internal fire and unleashed Dragonbreath on the mob, downing several of them with its power. Faran stood frozen as the oncoming wave of Roselia charged him, uncertain what to do. Riley jumped past him, taking out a Roselia that had been about to attack the Vulpix with a Bite. ”Faran, you can do this!” Riley said, spinning to use Take Down on yet another Roselia, ”You’re a Fire Type, they’re Grass Type!”
Faran blinked in surprise, oh yeah, he’d forgotten about that, ”I can do this,” he muttered to himself, working to boost his own confidence, ”Yeah…I can do this!” With a yip of delight he sprang in alongside the others, fire licking at his jaws. He aimed Ember after Ember at the Roselia, causing them to fall quickly as the flames spread. ”Ha!” he cried, using the Quick Attack that he was rather proud of on yet another Roselia, ”Take that!”
The Roserade watched calmly as her entourage were taken out one by one, until all that remained standing were herself, the Roselia holding Phione, and Team MistMelody. The Roserade clapped, softly and slowly, ”Bravo little explorers, you’ve defeated them,” she said slyly, ”But it would appear that I still have the upper hand…” she looked back to the single Roselia. ”Take him away, we have plans for him.” The Roselia bowed and turned to leave, Team MistMelody powerless to stop him for fear of hurting Phione, who by now was sobbing piteously.
Just as it appeared that all hope was lost, a lone burst of fire appeared out of nowhere and hit the Roselia squarely in the back, causing it to drop Phione as it fell to the ground unconscious, which was all the little Pokemon needed to bolt back to Era, whimpering in the Pikachu’s arms as she held him close. ”Leave them alone!” barked a voice belonging to a lone Growlithe who stalked up, hackles bristling, toward the Roserade. Clearly he had been the one who had taken down the Roselia. ”They have as much right to be here as anyone else who walks these paths.”
The Roserade’s eyes narrowed at the Growlithe, ”Don’t meddle boy, your place is not here!” she hissed. Returning her gaze to Team MistMelody, she smiled, the air once more filling with the Sweet Scent of her flowers, ”If they will not listen to me, then I shall simply have to destroy them one by one until they are all gone.”
Ethfael moved forward, gaze cold as ice, ”You will not harm any of them,” he said softly, ”You have gone too far, and we do not take kindly to those who attack our Team.” He stood defensively in front of his Team, unwavering as he held her gaze and standing proudly before her.
The Roserade’s eyes lit up delightedly and she laughed again, the same eerie tittering of bells as before. ”Oh you’re a Rescue Team? How marvelous!” she said fiendishly, ”Then it’s even more convenient that you dropped by! You see, the Guilds took something that belongs to me a long time ago and never gave it back. I’ll show you the true meaning of strength little Rescue Team, and you’ll regret ever setting foot here!” She cackled madly and the group looked at her tensely, all of them, even little Phione who had finally recovered, readying themselves for what was certain to be a fight.
The Growlithe crouched down in a battle-ready stance beside the Team, ”You can’t just attack innocent Explorers Fortuana!” he growled, ”This Labyrinth doesn’t belong to any one of us! It’s for anyone to come into! And your sister has nothing to do with this!”
The Roserade’s eyes flashed with contempt, ”I already told you boy, get away. You’re not some sort of hero so just give it up already!” she spat, ”What I do and what the consequences may be, are none of your business! And you know nothing about my sister!” In disdain she raised a flower and a brightly colored Stun Spore flew out toward the Growlithe. The boy didn’t react fast enough and was instantly paralyzed, his movements locked. ”This is my fight,” she muttered, ”My fight.” Without another warning she turned to Team MistMelody gracefully, ”Now then,” she said, ”I hope you’re ready little ones.” In the air around her formed rainbow colored leaves that floated about her figure, and in a trice they were fired towards the group.
Chaos ensued. Era shot a Swift Attack at the Roserade to begin, and Phione darted over to the Growlithe, eyes filled with concern. Faran fired and Ember and Riley gave him a Helping Hand, strengthening the fire as it hit her, and Ethfael sent a Twister spiraling toward her. The Roserade retaliated with a barrage of Poison Sting, thorns covered in toxic poison flying everywhere. The five jumped out of the way but the young Growlithe was unable to move taking the full front on blow. He angrily used Flame Wheel and forced himself forward into the Roserade, causing her to light on fire but the angered Roserade simply used Aromatherapy to clear away the burn before she was hit by another assault of attacks by Team MistMelody, forcing her to her knees as a Thundershock, Dragon Rage, and Ominous Wind all hit her at once. ”No!” she growled, pleasant voice contorting with rage, ”It will not end like this!”
She took a breath in and paused, her body glowing light green as she took in sunlight, Synthesis beginning to heal her wounds and reenergize her. Not pausing in her stride, the Roserade began to dance about swiftly and elegantly, petals beginning to cloak her figure, for it was Petal Dance. The spinning petals whipped toward the Team, cutting at them with razor edges, much more painful than they appeared. The Growlithe closed his eyes against the petals, unable to do much more. When the first torrent stopped, he opened his eyes and whispered softly to Faran, ”Hey, hey you!”
Faran’s ears pricked up and he replied, ”Me?” not turning around for fear of another attack. The Team was gathering itself, in complete disarray from the unexpected power of the Petal Dance.
”Yes, you,” the Growlithe replied, ”Her weak spot is that dark spot on her belly right there, do you see it?” Faran nodded and the Growlithe continued. ”If you hit her right there with your most powerful Fire-Type move, she’ll be down for good.”
Faran looked at the Growlithe curiously, for the first time taking in his figure in its entirety. ”Why are you doing this, don’t you live here too?” he asked.
”This is no time for questions!” the Growlithe replied, ”You have to take her down before she-“ The Growlithe’s mouth froze as he became locked in paralysis once more. Even as his voice ceased, another burst of petals flew forth, this one worse than the last.
Faran grimaced against the force of the petals, but pushed through it. ”Alright, I’ll do it…” he murmured. As he strode forward, flames began to gather around him, covering him just as the petals did the Roserade. ”I’ll do it, I’ll do it,” he chanted to himself, voice growing louder as he broke into a run, dashing towards the Roserade. She didn’t see him coming until it was too late, and he plowed into her at full force, knocking her to the ground and causing her to emit a cry as she fell to the ground, unconscious at last, but not before sticking her flower into Faran’s side, injecting her poison into his system as one final act of vengeance.
The Team collectively let out a sigh, relieved that the threat was eliminated, and Faran collapsed to the ground, fatigued from the effort he’d spent. Phione looked up, determined to prove himself now that he was able. ”Now I help!” he declared. Without further ado, he scurried about, resting his hands on each of the others and using Recover, a move that he’d learned thanks to a strange little ball that Sereni had given him. He included the Growlithe in his healing and then he swung his antenna from side to side, a Heal Bell ringing out and curing the paralysis and poisoning in the group. ”Now all better!” Phione cheered, happily circling around them, ”Scary flowers gone too!”
The Growlithe dipped his head to the Team, ”Thank you for your kindness,” he murmured softly.
”No, thank you,” Era replied sincerely, ”Without your help we would have had a great deal more trouble from that Roserade, and Phione might have been taken away.” She stood beside Phione protectively, determined now not to let him out of her sight. ”It was very kind of you to stand up for us like that.”
The Growlithe smiled, ”The Pokemon around here can be pretty hostile, so I patrol around to keep them in check. I want to work for Officer Arcanine when I grow up,” he said proudly, tail wagging, ”So I practice around here, making sure that nobody gets too out of line.”
Ethfael smiled at the boy, impressed by his dedication, ”I’m certain that you’ll make an excellent Officer yourself someday,” he said, causing the Growlithe to paw at the ground modestly. There was something else that intrigued Ethfael about his story though, ”If you patrol the Labyrinth,” he said pensively, ”Then you must know it’s layout rather well, mustn’t you?”
The Growlithe nodded, ”Like the back of my paw!” he said happily. His face darkened with unhappiness shortly after though as he continued, ”At least I used to; before that awful Alakazam showed up.” The Team instantly grew more attentive; that was the criminal they were after. ”He changes up the maze all the time for his own sadistic enjoyment,” the boy said darkly, ”You could be walking be the entrance and end up near the center at anytime. I bet if I turned around, I wouldn’t even end up where I came from. Someone needs to stop him. I would myself, but I’m not strong enough to do it alone.”
”You don’t have to worry kid!” Riley said cheerily, ”That’s what we’re here for. The police sent us to go track down this guy because it was too much for their usual force to handle. When it comes to that, the Guilds are given the job. Team MistMelody, at your service.” He gave a slight bow, accompanied by a grin. ”Our job is to track down this Alakazam and bring him to justice!”
The Growlithe’s eyes widened in surprise, ”Wow, you’re here to stop him?” he said wonderingly, ”Well I wish you the best of luck! If I can help in any way, just let me know, I’d do anything to stop him.”
”Well actually, there is something you could do for us,” Ethfael said, ”We need to find the center of the maze, and as quickly as possible, do you think you could point us in the right direction?”
”To the right is that way,” the boy joked, pointing to the hedge on the right. Then he furrowed his brow in thought, ”Well, I don’t know much about the layout that the Alakazam uses, but I have noticed that going right gets me near the center more often than going left.” He flattened his ears, slightly upset, ”Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.”
”It’s no trouble at all,” Era replied, ”In fact, you just made things easier for us. Thank you for all your help.”
”It was my pleasure,” the Growlithe replied, ”Well, I have to finish my patrol, so I’ve got to run. Who knows? We might find each other again.” Then with a wave of his tail, the boy hurried off the way he had come, disappearing down a curve and out of sight.
”Right,” Ethfael said, not wasting any time, ”We have to keep moving. The day isn’t getting any younger. And there’s still a great deal more of this maze to get through before we reach our destination.” He turned opposite the way that the Growlithe had gone, heading down the path towards a divide in the road, and the others were quick to follow, all refreshed thanks to Phione.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Alakazam looked up once again as the breeze stirred his long whiskers, ”What news do you bring me?” he asked It sharply. The breeze gently wrapped about him and then constricted tightly before fading back to a gentle breeze. ”So they made it past Fortuana did they?” he murmured, ”Perhaps I should begin to keep a closer eye on them.” The wind howled and moaned, whisking through the hedges and back, and the Alakazam seemed to follow its path with his gaze. ”What? You think that they should be no trouble separated?” he questioned, and the breeze blew by lightly as if in agreement. ”Very well then,” he replied, ”I’ll send them to meet Mister Darkwood. He should easily do as I require.” The Alakazam’s eyes closed as he took a meditation stance his mind in the maze, overseeing all within and ensuring that nothing would come close to disturbing his plan.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the Team progressed further into the maze, a feeling of being lost once again crept into them. They had followed the Growlithe’s advice, and yet there was still no sign of anything. Ethfael did his best to assure them that they very well could be right next to the center but would be none the wiser thanks to the hedges, but it still didn’t seem to improve the overall mood. Everything was exactly the same no matter which way they turned, and that was not very helpful to their frayed certainty. All in all, things were not looking the greatest as they made their way around the next bend, just as they had countless times before.
”Are we there yet?” Faran whined, his paws dragging. Going on a mission was supposed to be fun, not boring, but they hadn’t done anything. The most exciting part was meeting that Growlithe and fighting the Roserade, and then he’d been scared; that wasn’t fun!
”Not yet,” Riley replied, still keeping cheerful despite the gloom that seemed to have settled in, ”We just have to keep on going forward because if you keep on going forward then you’re bound to end up somewhere, no matter how long it takes.” The Eevee was clearly at ease with his surroundings much more so than the others, and he was working hard to ease the uncertainties of the others. ”Hey look, maybe that Poochyena can give us a hand.”
The other’s followed Riley’s pointing paw to see that there was a Poochyena up ahead, but the closer they looked, the more Era, Ethfael, and Riley began to feel that there was something not quite right about him. The Poochyena’s coat was overgrown to the point that it dragged on the ground, and it was untidy, clearly he hadn’t bathed or washed himself in a long time. The look in his eyes was feral and paranoid, as though he would attack anything on sight, and Era swallowed nervously, backing up a few steps. ”We should leave him alone,” she said fearfully. Her eyes widened with shock and dismay as she spotted Faran padding up to him, oblivious to what his older Teammates had been thinking. ”Faran! Get back here!” she cried, and then covered her mouth, horrified as the Poochyena looked right at them, revealing a pair of bloodshot eyes.
Faran trotted back, confused, as the Poochyena advanced on them. Drool began to fall from the creature’s jowls, and he licked his lips in a way that caused even Ethfael to shudder. ”Hello there my sweets,” the Poochyena drawled, licking his lips again, ”Don’t be afraid of old Mister Darkwood, he’s not going to hurt you.” The Poochyena’s eyes began to roll in his head as he cackled, ”Mister Darkwood wants to be friends. He’ll help you through the maze. You are lost like he once was.”
Era took hold of Phione’s hand and took another step back, ”No-No really, we’re fine, we don’t need any help.”
The Poochyena laughed, a harsh, raspy coughing sound that sounded almost as though he was choking. ”Mister Darkwood was like you once,” he said, ”He thought he was certain to be the hero who solved the maze. He didn’t take help from anyone, just wandered and wandered… But I’ll tell you a secret: Mister Darkwood never made it out. He was trapped, trapped in this maze forever, searching for the way out. He never did find it though, he survived though, survived to walk around these paths forevermore.” His voice faded out into that awful rasping cackle, and the entire Team was about ready to bolt, this guy was beyond crazy. ”Oh no,” the Poochyena said, looking at them with that same feral gaze, ”You think of leaving Mister Darkwood? Oh no. Mister Darkwood won’t let you leave, he hasn’t tasted real meat in years! Only plant meat mostly, you will be much more delicious.” With that he pounced forward and the Team split apart to avoid him.
Faran raced off down the path, terrified out of his wits. Oh Arceus, he was going to be eaten, that Poochyena wanted to eat him. Ethfael spotted the running Vulpix and cursed, they couldn’t be split up or else… Phione looked from side to side and then straight at the Poochyena, tears welling up in his eyes as the creature raced toward him. Ethfael looked back and snatched up Phione in his tail before using his Agility to race down the path toward Faran. ”Oh no you don’t!” the Poochyena sang, ”Mister Darkwood is coming for you!” Era and Riley watched the Poochyena bolt after their Teammate’s with dismay, realizing that it was already too late. Ethfael, Phione, and Faran were gone, and even if they followed they were certain to end up somewhere else.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Alakazam smiled, reopening his eyes. Now they were on opposite sides of the maze, and would search for each other as long as they liked but would never find each other. Darkwood was so predictable, he had long since broken the Poochyena’s mind and now he simply hunted about for more and more victims, and would do the same until the day that he died. He chuckled softly to himself, there were so many little police teams who had come in to try and catch him only to fail. They would never find him here, at the center of this Labyrinth which he controlled. ”Now we’ll see what you really amount to,” he said softly, closing his eyes once more to follow their paths.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
”Faran! Faran stop!” Ethfael shouted, matching pace with the Vulpix, ”He’s gone!” Faran’s blind panic caused him to run a few more paces before fully comprehending what he had been told and halting. ”Thank Arceus,” Ethfael muttered, stopping and at last letting the sobbing Phione in his tail go. ”Now we can…” he looked back and froze with disbelief. The path had changed and Era and Riley were nowhere to be seen.
Faran’s tail drooped as he followed Ethfael’s gaze and realized what had happened. ”They’re gone…” he murmured, ”Ethfael, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it! That Poochyena, he was going to kill me Ethfael!” Faran was the picture of unhappiness; he knew that he’d done wrong and he was certain that Ethfael would punish him for it.
Phione meanwhile, clung to Ethfael as if the Dragonair was the only one keeping him together. ”Era is gone!” he moaned, ”And Riley! All gone, and scary man still after us!”
Ethfael looked from Faran to Phione and back again with a sigh, wrapping his tail around both of them, ”It’ll be alright,” he said in a manner uncharacteristically gentle of him. He truly was fond of the children, and it pained him to see them like this. ”We’ll find them. Era knows as well as I that we’re here for the Alakazam, if we find him, we find Era and Riley.” The children nodded, taking comfort from Ethfael’s unwavering faith in the solution.
”Well, how touching,” a voice said, revealing Darkwood once more, ”Mister Darkwood thinks it’s sweet, will make you taste better when he eats you.” His fangs flashed silver in the light and he sprang forward, but Ethfael was ready, meeting the lunge with an Aqua Tail. The Poochyena howled and focused his eyes on Ethfael, gnashing his teeth. ”Mister Darkwood will get you for that!” the deranged Pokemon spat, lunging at Ethfael and pounding him with Assurance. Ethfael winced but responded with an Icy Wind which drove Darkwood back, and then pounding into him with Dragon Rush. The Poochyena was panting by this time from the onslaught of attacks, it seemed his unkemptness was finally doing a number on him. Laboriously, Darkwood hit Ethfael with a Sucker Punch in an attempt to drive him back, but to no avail. Ethfael instead took up the Poochyena in a Wrap and began to squeeze. The old Pokemon was too weakened to move by this point, let alone fight back. He meekly wiggled back and forth in a final attempt to escape, but Ethfael’s grip was too strong, squeezing the life out of the Poochyena. In a few moments longer the Poochyena let out one final rasp and his eyes closed, the breath gone from his lungs.
Ethfael sighed and uncoiled himself, letting the small body drop to the ground. Phione hid his eyes in sorrow but Faran found himself unable to look away. ”Sometimes the only thing you can do is put them out of their misery,” Ethfael sad, voice filled with sorrow, ”I couldn’t let him keep killing innocent Pokemon, like he would have done to you two.”
The Dragonair hung his head, afraid that they would think him a cold-blooded killer, but instead he received the opposite reaction. Faran and Phione both nuzzled in close to him, seeking comfort. ”You’re really brave, aren’t you Ethfael?” Faran said, eyes sad, ”You do what’s right, even if it hurts.” The Vulpix smiled slightly, and Ethfael looked at him in surprise. ”We should keep going.” Faran added, ”We have to find the others.”
”Yes,” Ethfael said, ”We should continue onward.” He nudged the other two ahead and stayed close behind them.
As they left, the wind brushed through the hedges and stirred the grass around Darkwood’s body, forming a small indentation around him. Flower petals were carried on the breeze and covered up the body until there was nothing to be seen but flowers on the ground where he lay. A shadowy figure bent down over the grave and lay a red scarf on top, a tear falling down onto the fabric. ”Whatever happened to you my old friend?” a voice whispered, soft as the wind, and then the figure vanished without a trace.

”It’s all my fault!” Era said, sitting on the ground entirely distraught. ”If I hadn’t shouted that Poochyena wouldn’t have noticed us and this never would have happened!” Ethfael and both of the kids were gone, and she knew that they’d never be able to find each other in this maze again. A tear trickled down her cheek, ”What are we going to do? Little Faran and Phione, I hope they’re alright, I hope Ethfael found them both…” she said miserably.
”Era, it’s not your fault!” Riley said gently, trying to soothe her fears. ”We’ll find them again, alright? We’re both headed for the same place. And I’m sure Ethfael found them, he had Phione with him when he ran after Faran in the first place, so there’s nothing you need to worry about.”
Era sniffled slightly and tried to pull herself together, taking strength from Riley’s words. Ethfael was responsible, he would definitely have found Faran and Phione, and wouldn’t let anything happen to them. ”You’re right Riley,” she murmured, ”I’m sorry, I just don’t want anything bad to happen to them; they’re still just kids.”
Riley smiled slightly, ”You said yourself that they can’t be sheltered forever,” he reminded her, ”Everyone has to grow up sometime, and the world can’t always be all smiles and kindness.” He nuzzled her gently, ”You just have to be there for them when they grow up, and that’s all the more anyone can do.” Era nodded although she was still disheartened by the entire thing. ”Come on, let’s see that smile,” Riley said, with a grin of his own, and she couldn’t help but give a half-hearted smile in return, ”That’s the spirit.”
Era stood up and steadied herself, ”Okay,” she said, ”We have to find that outlaw. If we find him we’ll find them. Ethfael’s sure to head that way.” Riley nodded in agreement and Era smiled, she’d be a lot worse off without him there to calm her down. ”Thanks Riley,” she said as they started down the path.
”It’s my pleasure,” Riley said, ”We’ve got to stick together, right?” In all honesty he was rather delighted that he was by himself with Era, out of Ethfael’s prying gaze. When Ethfael was around, Era’s eyes were only ever on him and Riley, although he’d never let on, was slightly jealous.
As they headed through the twists and turns of the maze, Era’s senses were on high alert, trying to discern the path that they were looking for from all the rest. The maze was monotonous, but every now and then something of interest would appear, a little side section with a fountain here, a pair of Hoppip floating about on the breeze there, and the weather was pleasant enough that they could enjoy themselves slightly despite the awful predicament they found themselves in.
Eventually they ended up in a clearing somewhere in the maze, they would have passed it by if Riley hadn’t noticed the oddly large gathering of Pokemon there. Large was a relative statement, as there were only four Pokemon present there, but neither Era nor Riley had expected to see a group of Pokemon in the maze. There a Bayleef, Cherrim, Wormadam, and Ivysaur were conversing intently, discussing something or another, and Era and Riley entered the small clearing to listen in on their conversation. ”I just don’t know,” the Cherrim was saying, ”No one’s ever been able to find the Creator before, so why would we be able to now?”
”Because we’re in the most dire state of need we’ve ever been in!” the Bayleef replied, ”The Creator ought to want to help us!”
”Wouldn’t it be best to let the legend lie?” the Ivysaur said seriously, ”It’s best not to disturb the Creator. We’d be hard pressed to find the Creator, let alone plead for help.”
The Wormadam tittered nervously, ”Well we can’t just leave it lie, this has gone far enough don’t you think?” There were murmurs of consent from the others, but none of them seemed to be able to come up with something decisive.
Era made her way over to them, ”Excuse me,” she said, causing the Wormadam to jump at the unfamiliar voice. ”You wouldn’t be talking about the Alakazam who’s taken over the maze, would you?”
”Oh, wouldn’t we be talking about that!” the Wormadam said, ”We’ve had enough of being manipulated by that Alakazam. We are fed up and putting an end to it, that’s what we’re doing.”
The Ivysaur looked them over pensively, eyes resting on Era, who was reminded oddly of Serrin, ”You’re a Rescue Team, aren’t you?” he said thoughtfully.
”Yes, we are,” she said, ”Well, part of one anyway.” She didn't mention that the other part of her group was gone, since it was unnecessary and would bring her sorrows back again. ”We're tracking down an Alakazam who's been causing problems around here.”
”Awesome!” the Bayleef said, ”A Rescue Team, huh? From the Guilds right? We've got help guys!”
The Cherrim smiled at them pleasantly, ”We've got a predicament you see,” she explained, ”There is a Pokemon only known as the Creator who lives somewhere around here. We call that Pokemon the Creator because that Pokemon made this maze. It's not a name of reverence or anything, but more a name we gave because no one knows that Pokemon's real name. We're considering whether or not to search that Pokemon out.” She frowned slightly, ”I'm not so sure that we'll be able to find that Pokemon because no one's seen the Creator ever before.”
The Bayleef scoffed slightly, shaking his head, ”I think that we should search for that Pokemon, the Creator made the Labyrinth after all, so the Creator should be able to fix things. That Pokemon should show itself because we need it here.”
”It's all very well to chase after legends,” the Ivysaur said, “But we need to take action more than anything right now. If we go in ourselves, then we'll get faster results than looking for something that may or may not be true. However, our best bet would be to let this Rescue Team help us. That is if you'd be willing?” he said, turning to look at Era.
”Of course,” said Era pleasantly, ”We just need to be pointed in the right direction and we can handle whatever it is you need us to do.”
”Excellent,” the Ivysaur said with a slight smile, ”The Alakazam has taken up residence at the center of the maze as you've no doubt guessed by this point, and he constantly changes the maze's form so that no one will be able to reach the center. He keeps a magical stone with him at all times to increase his powers however, so if you can find a way to track magic, you may be able to find him before he can alter the paths. Your other option would be to track down the Creator, for which the only advice I can give you would be to search the furthest reaches of the maze; they say she will be found where you least expect to find her.”
”This Creator is a she?” Riley asked curiously, ”Well I guess that narrows our options down a bit.” The Eevee's tail whipped back and forth pensively, ”So if we look for the Alakazam then perhaps we'll come across this Creator as well, unintentional or not.”
The Ivysaur nodded and the others looked at him curiously, ”Where on earth did you hear that the Creator was a she?” the Wormadam asked rather pompously, ”You're not nearly as knowledgeable as that.”
”Then let's call it a hunch, shall we?” the Ivysaur replied, nodding to Era and Riley, ”Best of luck to you both. You'd better hurry.”
Era and Riley nodded and hurried down the path further into the maze, leaving the strange quartet alone in the clearing. ”You don't suppose they'll actually make it do you?” the Cherrim asked with concern, ”The others that tried were sent to their deaths.”
”It's alright,” the Ivysaur replied, ”I have a good feeling about them.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ethfael looked about, eyes alert for any sign of trouble. He, Faran, and Phione had been walking for quite some time now without any disturbances, and it was making him more cautious than normal. Usually there was someone or something that popped up more frequently than had been occurring in this maze. Faran blinked suddenly, his nose twitching. ”Huh, that's funny,” he said offhandedly.
”What might that be?” Ethfael asked slightly tensely.
”I smell a gemstone,” Faran replied, closing his eyes and scenting the air, ”It's really powerful too, wow! Even the evolutionary stones back home didn't smell this powerful!” The Vulpix put his nose to the ground like a dog, sniffing around for a scent trail, ”It's coming from this way!” Faran said, opening his eyes and pointing down the left hand path.
Ethfael looked at Faran with surprise, ”You can smell gemstones?” he asked. That was quite a remarkable thing for a child like Faran to have that keen of a tracking ability, and if it was evolutionary stones he had smelled back home, then perhaps this stone held untapped magic as well. Then perhaps that was where the Alakazam was. Magic sounded like something that a Psychic would like to keep around to tap into if necessary.
”Not gemstones!” Faran said indignantly, confirming Ethfael's thoughts, ”Evolutionary stones! But this is something different, this is more powerful than an evolutionary stone, I can tell.”
”I'll bet if we follow that scent you've picked up, we'll be able to locate our villain,” Ethfael said. ”We need to find where that scent leads, and I'm betting that once we find that we'll have found the Alakazam. Do you think you can lead us there Faran?”
Faran nodded, gaze determined, ”Sure, I'll give it my best shot,” he replied, and began leading the trio down the path. There were no small number of twists and turns to keep them from their destination, but that didn't stop Faran; the young Vulpix was determined to get them to the source of the scent, no matter what. He wanted to make things up with Ethfael for separating them from the others, and this seemed like an ideal way to do it.
The longer the traveled, the more weary they became until at last they arrived at a place where the path split off in four directions. Faran paced about uncertainly, trying to pinpoint the location of the scent, but not having much success. ”I can't tell for sure which way it goes...” Faran said with disappointment. Then his nose twitched again and he sneezed, a puff of pollen filling the air around him. He shook his fur out, getting the pollen off of him and sniffed the air again, ”Oh! I've got it now! It's-”
”Hey!” a voice shouted from the distance, a familiar Growlithe striding down the far right path. ”Who would have thought I'd run into you guys again!” he said, tail wagging. ”I remembered something about the maze that I thought would be helpful to you, so I was hoping I'd find you again!” The Growlithe smiled, ”I remembered that the Alakazam often alternates paths. If you go left, then you should counterbalance it with a right, and so on, and then you'll get to the middle.”
Ethfael looked at the boy, slightly puzzled, ”Well we went left last...” he murmured to himself.
”Then you should go right now!” the Growlithe barked, bounding toward the right pathway.
”But, I think we should go le-!” Faran began.
”It's definitely right,” the Growlithe stated, ”Come on, I'm trying to help you!” Ethfael sighed, nodding to the Growlithe to lead on, and Faran followed, ears drooping slightly. Was he really that far off? Phione, who had been keeping very quiet as they walked let out a small whimper. The little Pokemon got the feeling that something wasn't quite right...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
”So what do you think this Alakazam will be like?” Riley asked Era, padding along beside her on the path, ”I mean, I know a thing or two about Psychics but this guy must be pretty strange if he just decided to change up this maze for no reason. It's crazy enough in the first place without changing on you every other turn.”
Era laughed a bit appreciative of the humor that Riley provided. ”Well I'm certain that he doesn't come from around here in the first place,” she said, ”Most likely the law has been chasing him down for quite some time, but he's managed to evade them. This Labyrinth is well-known for being a near impossible maze, so he probably heard about it and made his way here.” Era's expression clouded as she realized that there was something that didn't quite make sense. ”Of course, there's always been a Psychic barrier to keep Pokemon from just a Teleport to the center so Ethfael says, which would mean that he couldn't just have gone to the center of the Labyrinth by magical means, but would have needed to find his way through the maze by himself... He would have needed inside help!”
Riley frowned, ”But what about his manipulation of the maze?” he questioned, ”Couldn't he just have made a straight path for himself through to the center?”
”No, don't you see?” Era asked her excitement and adrenaline heightening, ”He had to have known the layout of the maze from someone to begin with, because you can't change something as thoroughly and complexly as he's doing without knowing the entire layout of the maze from the start! Some Pokemon had to have shown it to him in some way or else he couldn't be doing this! The Police thought that he worked alone but that's not true, there's some Pokemon, maybe even several Pokemon on his side around here! That Roserade must have been one of them, and that Poochyena that we met, even though he wasn't all there, but neither of them could show him the maze, he would need...”
”Me,” a voice lighter than the wind itself answered. Turning, Era and Riley found themselves looking at, or almost through in this case, a Tropius who was eying them warily. The Tropius was translucent in color, and if you looked directly at her you would find yourself looking through her. Her eyes were pure white save for slightly blue-tinted irises that gave the appearance of blindness, although they could both tell that her vision was actual for the Tropius stared straight at them without the lack of focus that blind eyes had. Around her neck she wore a sky blue scarf, the only ornament on her at all, and the winds stirred all around her, revealing a very unusual control of the wind that few other Tropius had. Era and Riley both had never seen a Tropius with such powerful winds, and it was rather inspiring to behold. ”It wasn't by choice, but I can't back out now,” she said in the same eerie wind voice, ”He has something that I can't live without...” The Tropius fidgeted slightly, ”I'm here to tell you to turn back. I don't want to hurt you, but he'll make me if you come hunting him down. I can show you the way out, but please, don't try to find him any more...” Her voice died down in a sigh like the wind, and the breeze blew over to Era and Riley, as if pleading with them without words.
”I'm sorry, but we have to track him down,” Era said, ”Every Pokemon here has been oppressed by him, even yourself. If we can stop this Alakazam then all of you will be liberated. It's better for everyone that way!” The Pikachu's eyes shone with passion as she spoke, ”We want to help you, and all the other Pokemon here! We're a Rescue Team, it's our pride, our responsibility to keep him from terrorizing you! Please, help us find him!”
The Tropius shook her head fearfully, ”You don't understand,” she murmured, voice very faint, ”He controls me. He goes into my mind and doesn't give me any control! He makes me keep tabs on everything going on in the Labyrinth and he puts ideas in my head so he can talk to himself! He's mad and dangerous, and he uses my winds as his own... It's like he turns me into some sort of sick monster!" She shuddered, but continued her story, "I used to be a member of a Rescue Team like yourself, my partner was that Poochyena who split your Team up. He wasn't always as insane as he is now; he used to be sweet and heroic, and my partner who I trusted above all else, but one day, a long time back we decided that we'd be the ones who would make it through the Labyrinth. We got separated. I found friendly Pokemon who took me in; they couldn't show me the way out, but they took care of me. He found hatred and contempt everywhere he went. It turned on him and warped his mind, really the Alakazam only put the finishing touches on it. I found him once, after I knew the maze well enough to find the way out. I had been searching for him for ages, but when he saw me he tried to kill me. Now there's nothing left but the sad memory in his corpse. Your Dragonair companion killed him.”
"You've seen Ethfael?" Era said, "Please tell us where to find them, or at least if they're alright!"
The Tropius' winds spiraled rapidly around her in her agitation, and she shook her head from side to side, making the air look as though it was shimmering strangely, ”I cannot, for now, he comes into my thoughts...” the voice on the wind said trailing off, ”He comes...”
The Tropius thrashed about, seeming to be at war with herself and Era and Riley took a few steps back, afraid of being trampled. The thrashing stopped as suddenly as it had started, and the duo looked warily at the peculiar Tropius, trying to determine whether or not she was safe to approach again. Riley was the first to react, ”Look out!” he shouted, shoving her out of the way as the Tropius flew forward, aided by Tailwind. He'd seen something that Era hadn't spotted; her eyes had turned a menacing shade of glowing purple.
The Tropius let out a roar of sorts, and fired a Razor Leaf, the attack so forceful that the leaves left cuts where they hit the skin of the two smaller Pokemon. Era ducked, and then charged up her electricity for a Thunderbolt, hitting the Tropius directly on. She snarled in reproach and flapped her wings, flying into the air, away from the other two. She was very difficult to see against the sky, only the slightest of odd appearances making her clear. Riley turned quickly, pulling out his cards and drawing the Ace of Clubs. In a trice spotted her just for an instant and leaped up to throw it, hitting the Tropius in the wing with his Trump Card and eliciting a glare from the other Pokemon. She flew down and struck Riley with a Fly attack, flapping her wings to settle on the ground once more. Era raced forward, pounding their opponent with a Thunderpunch. The Tropius dropped down on her in a Body Slam and the Pikachu gasped for air for a few moments before Riley slammed into the Tropius with a Take Down, forcing her just far enough off of Era for the Pikachu to get out and catch her breath. ”Riley, we need to get to her wings,” Era forced out as she breathed heavily, ”If we paralyze them then we've got a chance!”
”Got it!” Riley said, wincing slightly from the recoil of his attack. He sprang up to Bite the Tropius' wing, and the Pokemon shook him about wildly, but he wouldn't let go. Era used Doubleslap, hitting the Tropius upside the head to distract it from Riley. The ploy worked and the Tropius stepped forward, beginning to glow slightly with light. The overall appearance was light trickling through veins of the translucent Tropius, and Riley gasped, letting gow as the energy grew. The Tropius unleashed a powerful Solar Beam at Era, who dodged to the side, her side getting only slightly singed from the power. Riley jumped at the Tropius with a Tackle, and Era aimed another Thunderbolt at her, the Tropius convulsing under the stress of the electric volts. It seemed that she was also weaker to electricity than the average Tropius. Riley hit her with a last Quick Attack, and the Tropius' legs and wings locked and she toppled to the ground twitching. Era's lightning had finally gotten to her and she was paralyzed.
The purple haze receded from the Tropius' eyes at last, and she blinked painfully, looking at Era and Ethfael. Her winds stirred every so slightly around her and she struggled to say something, her consciousness fading fast. ”I...I'm s-sorry...” she forced out, her eyes closing, unable to take the damage she'd obtained any longer, ”I'm so sorry...” Then the Tropius was still, her breathing shallow but still present. She would survive, but she needed to be helped by someone, and she desperately needed rest.
Era stroked the Tropius' leaves soothingly, her gaze gentle, ”Don't worry,” she murmured, ”We'll make certain that Alakazam can't torment you any longer.” She turned to Riley sadly, ”This has gotten very far out of hand,” she said, ”We have to stop him now before it's too late.”
”I found them!” a voice piped up, ”Come on, hurry!” From down the path behind them the Growlithe, Ivysaur, Wormadam, Bayleef and Cherrim from before came hurrying down, their eyes lighting up as they spotted Era and Riley. The Growlithe panted, ”You guys are impossible to find!” he complained, ”Your scent trails are all over the place! Hey, what happened to the others who were with you before?”
”We got separated earlier,” Riley said, ”We've been trying to find them but we figure that if we track down the Alakazam, they're bound to end up there sooner or later. We're all after the same guy.”
The Ivysaur's gaze darkened, ”There are more of you who are separated?” he said, ”Let's hope we reach the Alakazam first. He plays tricks unlike any that you could ever imagine.” He looked to Era and Riley again, ”Regardless, I've brought you a magic tracker,” he informed them, ”And we've decided to help.”
”We can't just sit by and watch home get torn to pieces like this!” the Bayleef agreed, ”We want to fight!”
"Oh yes, let's!" the Wormadam said delightedly.
”It's all we have to offer, but we hope that you'll accept our help,” the Cherrim conclued.
”Certainly,” Era replied, doing her best to take their sudden acquisition of help in stride, ”We're happy to have any help we can get. It's your right as much as ours to deal with this Alakazam, so if you want to aid us, then by all means, we'll accept.” Looking to the Growlithe with a nod she smiled, ”Lead the way.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Alakazam shook his head in disapproval; his pet had failed him and those pesky Pokemon who protested his command were giving the Rescue Team a hand. At this rate he'd have to actually prepare to fight them. It was such a bother to constantly deal with the Police, let alone Rescue Teams. He wasn't at all afraid that he'd lose, he just simply didn't want to bother with a trivial Rescue Team. With a sigh he got up and walked over to his precious stone that helped to channel his Psychic powers, he touched it, feeling the power course through him and smiled. ”Let them come,” he muttered to himself, ”I'll show them the true meaning of pain.” He chuckled; besides, he already had half of the group at an impasse. He looked down at the Pokemon lying below him with a dark smile. They had fallen right into his trap.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Faran was beginning to have a bad feeling about the running around that they were doing. The Growlithe had led them this way and that but they still hadn't arrived although the Growlithe had claimed several times, “they were almost there.” Not only that, but the scent of the magic stone had grown very faint, and he was afraid it would disappear completely if they kept going much further. ”Hey!” he said, ”I'm really really sure that we're going the wrong way!”
The Growlithe turned on him angrily, ”And for the hundredth time, I'm really really sure that we're not going the wrong way, so just keep following!”
Ethfael was taken aback by the harshness of the Growlithe's tone, he'd seemed very kind before, but now the Dragonair was having second thoughts. ”How can you be so certain?” he said suspisciously, ”You said before that you didn't know the layout anymore thanks to that Alakazam, so how should your guess be any better than Faran's?”
The Growlithe looked taken aback and didn't respond at first. ”Well...because!” he said rather flustered, ”I-I told you the right thing before didn't I? So you should trust me!” The Growlithe prowled back and forth in front of them agitatedly.
Phione frowned, walking up to the Growlithe, ”Different!” he said, ”Different!” He reached his paw up to touch the Growlithe and the large Pokemon jumped back, snarling and growling at Phione. Ethfael jumped forward and slapped the Growlithe with Aqua Tail, his doubts confirmed by the attack. The appearance of the Growlithe melted and was replaced by that of an Alakazam. Phione nodded decisively, ”Different.”
Ethfael tensed at the sight of the Alakazam, ”So you show yourself at last,” he said with disdain, ”One would think you were afraid of us.” The Dragonair was surprised that the Alakazam made himself so easy to find, but he was about ready to end this Bounty. He'd had enough of running around in pointless circles to last a life time.
The Alakazam laughed, ”Hardly, you just weren't smart enough to catch on before now,” he said maliciously, ”But it's too late for that now.” With an evil laugh the Alakazam raised his spoons, and dark red chains sprung up from the ground and bound all three of them to the ground. The chains pulsed every few moments with a shock of energy that ate away at their energy, and the Alakazam chuckled malevolently.
”What…” Ethfael gasped as the chains tightened around him, ”What are you doing to us?”
The Alakazam chuckled once more, stepping close to Ethfael for just a moment. ”Haven’t you realized yet?” he said, ”You’re dreaming.” He broke off once more into insane laughter and turned away, ”I’ll let you have the memories back since you won’t be needing them anymore.” he flicked his hand once and vanished, leaving only his echoing laugh remaining.
Ethfael cursed, watching the memories flood back to his mind as they replaced what was true from what the Alakazam had replaced his thoughts with. They’d found the center of the maze with Faran’s guidance, and the Alakazam was there. He’d looked at them with surprise, but dismissed their presence with no more than a look. Ethfael had resented that and sent a Dragon Rage toward him, which had dissipated against an invisible barrier as soon as it got close to the Alakazam. ”Fine then, if I must do something with you,” the villain had said, and then…then the memories began to meld with the dream. The Alakazam must have forced them into a deep sleep with Hypnosis, and now was feeding off of their life energies with Dream Eater.
Phione began to cry again as the pain came over him. It wasn’t fair! He didn’t want to hurt people but they were hurting him everywhere he went. The little Pokemon didn’t understand everything that was going on, but he knew that he kept getting hurt, and that his Team kept getting hurt, but he couldn’t do anything to stop it. He sniffled miserably, he just wasn’t strong enough to keep his friends from getting hurt.
Ethfael looked over to him sympathetically, and then to Faran who’s expression bordered on tears as well. ”It…will be alright…” he said, trying to reassure them. ”Era and Riley can’t have been too far off from the center, so they will help us.” He had to believe that it was true; nothing else would be able to save them from death at the hands of this monster other than that. ”They’ll come,” he whispered as the pain took him once again, ”They’ll come.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After no small number of twists and turns through the maze, Era, Riley, and the others arrived at a singular long path, the hedges leading down it ornamented with white roses. Riley checked to make certain there weren’t any Roselia or Roserade, just in case; the experience from before still not sitting well with him. Fortunately they were just roses, and so the group all stared down to the gap at the end of it with slight apprehension. ”This is it,” the Growlithe boy said nervously, ”The scent trail is strongest here, so he must be here.” The group looked uncertainly downward with bated breath; it had finally come to this moment.
Era walked up to the front with Riley not far behind her, as they took their positions as the leaders of this little venture. The atmosphere was charged with suspense, and Era turned back to the others. ”We’ve finally made it,” she said, ”It’s up to you whether you come up with us further. We don’t want you to get hurt, but we won’t stop you if you want to join us still.”
”We’re coming,” the Ivysaur said, speaking for all of the others, although a chorus of nods echoed his statement. ”We said we would fight for our home, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Era nodded, ”Alright then, Riley and I will go first and all of you can follow.” As much as she hated to lead Pokemon who weren’t Guild members into battle, they were determined, and she would simply have to accept it. Leaning over to Riley as the others broke into a murmured discussion, she whispered, ”We have to finish this as quickly as possible. We can’t let them get hurt for helping us. We have to keep the Alakazam’s attention on us.” Riley nodded, and Era turned back to the others, ”All ready everyone? Here we go.”
The small group, led by the Pikachu and Eevee walked, down the path, making their way into the center clearing, and what they saw took their breath away. The center of the Labyrinth was home to a magnificent fountain, carved into the appearance of an Espeon and an Umbreon, both staring up toward a spherical globe that was of royal blue in color and gave off a luminescent glow. The ground and the hedges around the edges of the space were adorned with the most beautiful of flowers in rich shades so extravagant that they seemed to glisten in the soft light of the globe which shed the most light in the area since night had come. At the other end of the clearing sat a gazebo, wherein sat the Alakazam, and at his feet were Ethfael, Faran, and Phione.
Everything immediately after that happened in an instant. The Alakazam stepped forward from the gazebo and a Razor Leaf shot towards him from the Bayleef. The Psychic Type idly stepped to the side of it and pointed his spoons at the five non-Guild Pokemon, causing them to immediately find themselves trapped behind an invisible Barrier. Era and Riley looked back to find their companions pressing against what looked like nothing, but was clearly an invisible wall that prevented even sound from coming through. When they looked back, the Alakazam stood before them, eyes hard with menace. ”Welcome Rescue Team, I’ve been expecting you,” he said, ”It was too much of a trouble to keep you away any longer, so I’ve decided to let you come so that I may deal with you myself…as I did your other half.”
Era’s eyes were drawn to the fallen forms of her companions instantaneously, and she gasped in shock. They had to get to the others somehow. She and Riley alone would have hard time taking this Alakazam down, especially since she had just seen him immobilize four Pokemon without even blinking. ”You’re awfully cocky, aren’t you?” Riley said, and Era stared at him in shock. What was he thinking! The Alakazam would kill him! ”I mean, it’s one thing to be able to manipulate a maze, but I doubt you can actually fight.” Riley shot a glance at Era and she finally got it; he was stalling so that she could go and see to the others.
She sidestepped slightly and the Alakazam didn’t react, his focus entirely on Riley. ”You insolent boy!” the Alakazam spat, ”I am the one who set up every step of your journey here! I determined what Pokemon you’d fight, I split you up and put your companions into a deep sleep, I am the one who allowed you to even come here to this place!” The Alakazam continued his rant and Era carefully made her way around behind him and across to the gazebo. Riley was brilliant, he’d not only distracted the Psychic’s attention but he’d also gotten him to explain what he’d done. Pulling three Chesto Berries out of her bag, Era moved quickly, feeding each of the three a berry. The effects were near instantaneous. Ethfael’s eyes fluttered open and he opened his mouth to say something but Era hushed him, pointing toward the Alakazam. Phione clung to her arm, hugging her tightly, and Faran looked more relieved than she’d ever seen him look before, but she made certain that they made no noise. Quietly she whispered a plan to them, and the three nodded as she turned to head back.
…Which is why you have no room to talk!” the Psychic concluded haughtily, having explained so much that Riley had begun to tune him out. He was focused on Era, they almost had it, they’d almost made it! ”And now, enough of your games,” he said, and Psychic grabbed the four members of Team MistMelody on the other side of the clearing and tossed them behind Riley. ”You thought you were clever didn’t you,” he said to Riley maliciously, ”But I knew what you were up to, and now that you think it’s an even fight…” he trailed off with a laugh, ”You can just try to defeat me.” The five members of Team MistMelody were forced to scatter as he drew a chunk of earth up from the ground and threw it straight at them with the help of a Psychic, ”Come and get me!” he crowed, hovering above the ground.
Faran let loose a breath of Ominious Wind at the Alakazam, the haze wrapping around him as Riley followed up with another Trump Card, the Ace of Diamonds meeting its target. Era aimed a Thunderbolt at him and Ethfael fired Dragonbreath. Phione joined in with a Bubble as well, the attacks all hitting one right after the other. The Alakazam laughed at their attempts, and retaliated with a Psycho Cut at Riley, sending the Eevee flying backwards. Faran yelped as the cut passed by him and hit the Alakazam with an Ember to which Era gave a Helping Hand. Phione seemed to have vanished, nowhere to be seen but soon he crashed down on top of the Alakazam with a Bounce. The Psychic Type grabbed for the little Pokemon, but Phione had already jumped off, the distraction giving Ethfael a chance to disrupt the Alakazam’s levitation with a Twister. The Alakazam howled and sent a Psybeam back and forth across the group, hitting each of them in turn. Ethfael regained his wits quickly and leaped on his chance, hitting the Alakazam down from the sky with an Extremespeed. Era sent an Electro Ball after him, which Faran paired up with another Ominous Wind. Riley raced forward from his fallen position and used Bite on the Psychic, causing him to double over in pain, but a Future Sight that the Alakazam had used earlier pushed the Team away from him before they could take advantage of their momentary triumph. Panting slightly the Alakazam picked up Era with his Psychic and threw her back against the Barrier that he’d made before, but Phione raced back and helped her up. Ethfael was on him with a Dragon Rush in no time, which Riley followed up with a Take Down. Neither of them would forgive him for that. Faran took a deep breath and mimicked what he did with the Roserade, charging after his older Teammates with Flare Blitz, knocking the Alakazam over. While the Alakazam was down, Ethfael used Wrap, coiling himself around the outlaw and robbing him of enough air to knock him unconscious and just like that, the fight was over.
”We…we did it!” Faran said, panting heavily from all the effort it had cost. He suddenly felt a rush of pride swell over him, ”We caught the bad guy!”
”You bet we did,” Era said with a slight laugh as she and Phione made their way over to the others, the five onlookers also trailing behind them now that the Barrier was down. ”Now all that’s left is to bring him back to the police.” Turning back to the four behind her she said, ”Thank you so much for your assistance, we really appreciated you support.”
”But we didn’t even do anything!” the Bayleef said, sounding rather disappointed, ”He trapped us behind that Barrier and laughed at us.”
”You might not have helped in the actual fight,” Riley said, ”But your support meant a lot to us. More than you’d think.” He smiled, ”And now, everything’s fine, the outlaw is captured, we’re back with the rest of our Team, and we got to see this amazing place.”
”It’s a bit less so now I’m afraid…” the Cherrim said sadly, ”But it’s not your fault.” Turning to look around, they saw what she meant. The once beautiful carpet of flowers that lay on the grass before the fight were all uprooted and scattered this way and that. It looked nothing like what had been there before. Noticing the distraught look on Era’s face the Cherrim looked mortified, ”I really didn’t mean it was your fault,” she said, but then fell silent as something strange began to happen.
From the gazebo, a light glimmered, just a sparkle or two at first, but it soon changed to a shaft of light looking something like sunlight. Out of it stepped a lovely Bellossom, her expression serene and kindly. She walked over to them, hardly seeming to touch the ground as she moved, stirring the grass very lightly as she walked. ”Oh dear, this will never do,” she said in a lovely light voice that suited her appearance. She walked up to the paths of dead and dying flowers and walked amongst them. To the group’s amazement, the flowers rose up, looking as fresh and lovely as if they were new. ”There now,” she murmured to them, ”Breathe my darlings.”
They stared at her in shock, and she smiled back at them, ”How did you do that?” Faran asked in amazement.
The Bellossom laughed lightly, ”I did it,” she said, ”Because this is my Labyrinth. I created it, and I am its caretaker. Too long has it been in the care of that ruffian, and it deserves better than that.” With that she bowed and turned back to the gazebo, light beginning to form around her again. ”May the blessings of nature go with you,” she murmured to them all before she vanished, leaving the clearing as beautiful as it once was, all traces of the battle, even the Alakazam’s stone, were gone.
”The Creator…” the Cherrim breathed, ”That was actually her.”
"Oh good Arceus above, so it was!" the Wormadam tittered.
”…And so all the loose ends are tied up,” the Ivysaur said, ”Thank you for all your help Rescue Team.”
”It was our pleasure,” Era replied, ”It’s our job to take care of things like these.”
”But now,” said Ethfael, ”It’s time to go back. We have to get him-“ he nodded to the Alakazam that he still held, ”Back to the police.”
Era summoned all of her Team close together, reaching into the bag for the Rescue Badge. ”Thank you for all of your help again,” she said, ”We couldn’t have done it without you.” With a final nod to them, she raised the Rescue Badge as their new friends waved goodbye, and it caught the light, sending Team MistMelody back to the Guild.

The moment that Team MistMelody got back, Officer Arcanine was there to greet them. "Excellent job!" the Arcanine congratulated them, clearly pleased with their work. "We'll take it from here." Ethfael finally uncoiled himself from around the unconscious Alakazam, and a pair of Growlithe officers came up to either side of the criminal, proceding to make their way out of the Guild, Officer Arcanine watching with satisfaction. "Thank you for your assistance!" the Arcanine said with a warm smile. "Here's the reward for his capture." The sack they were given held a bounty of 5,000PD, which had been the price on the outlaw's head. With a last nod to the Team, Officer Arcanine turned and followed his subordinates out the door.
As soon as he was gone, Era hurried everyone back to the Team Room in order to get Faran and Phione to bed. It was very late and they'd had a very long day. Even Era, Ethfael, and Riley didn't stay up much longer than to explain the events of the Bounty to an eager Erinn and Sereni; the Bounty had taken a lot out of all of them. The night brought welcome sleep to the five who had been away, and the morning would find them all regenerized.
That morning, while the others were still sleeping, Era was awoken by an almost tentative knock on the door. Puzzled as to who might be calling so early, she made her way to the door and opened it to find the ragtag band of Pokemon who had stuck with her and Riley throughout their seach. "Good morning," the Ivysaur said with a smile, "We were hoping to find you here." The five trickled into the middle of the Team Room at Era's beckoning, taking a seat on the variety of pillow-chairs that they had. When everyone was settled, the Ivysaur continued, "We wanted to thank you and your Team once again for ridding the Labyrinth of that Alakazam. Things have already begun to grow normal again."
"We're very thankful to you," the Cherrim said with a smile, "So we all wanted to bring you something to show our gratitude." She procured a bulging bag which she held out to Era, "We picked some berries for you from the center of the Labyrinth. They must have come from the Creator's presence, because after you left we noticed that they had grown on the hedges although they never had before. I don't know if that makes them special or not, but who knows?"
Era accepted them with a thank you and then the Bayleef piped up, "Hey! You can't forget this! It's the best part!" With one of his vines he handed Era an odd looking spoon that was bent backward. "The Alakazam was using this to make his powers stronger, along with that weird stone, whatever it was. We figured that you should have it since you took him down, as a sort of trophy for beating him! It's lucky we found it, if it weren't for the wind pushing aside a few ferns it might have fallen into the wrong hands again!" Era smiled a bit, so the Tropius was alright after all. That was good to know, it made her feel more at peace to know that the Tropius was now liberated.
"You were so wonderfully brave my dear," the Wormadam said in her busy way, "Really, you all were simply marvelous! I would love for such brave Pokemon to take care of me! You'll take me, won't you?" Era was slightly put off, realizing that the Wormadam was in fact asking to join her Team, but that was when chaos broke out.
"Hey, no way! I'm the one who's joining their Team!" the Bayleef said angrily, "You're completely useless! They wouldn't want you!"
"What did you say young man?" the Wormadam said indignantly, "I am most certainly not useless. You'd choose me over him, no wouldn't you dear?" she said to Era, evoking another protest from the Bayleef as they continued quarreling.
"I'd rather like to join your Team," the Cherrim said quietly, "Although I'm a bit confused at times I wouldn't be that much trouble!"
"I also was considering asking," the Ivysaur said, looking at Era with those piercing eyes again.
"But I wanted to too!" the Growlithe said, looking rather disheartened. All the while, the arguement between the Wormadam and Bayleef was growing louder and louder, and Era didn't know what to do. She couldn't handle all five of them by herself, it was way too much.
"...Era what's going-?" came Riley's slightly groggy voice from the other room as the disheveled Eevee made his way out. He froze in shock at the sight of the five all sitting there, his mouth slightly open. "When did they...?"
Ethfael came out behind Riley, clearly irritated. "Could we have a bit of silence?" he asked in an even soft tone which went completely ignored by the two shouting Grass-Types. "SILENCE!" Ethfael shouted, causing everyone to turn and stare at him in surprise, completely silent. The Dragonair sighed, closing his eyes for a moment as though he had a headache. "Era, what in Arceus's name is going on here?"
Era sighed, relieved that it was quiet again and things were slightly more under control, "These five brought some gifts from the Pokemon of the maze," she explained, "And all of them apparently are looking to join the Team." The Pikachu's ear twitched with discomfort, she hated to say no to anyone, it left her with an awful feeling, but only one Pokemon could join per mission, those were the rules.
Ethfael looked at the young Growlithe with puzzlement, the others made sense, but he didn't quite fit in. "Didn't you want to join the Police force?" Ethfael said to him, not harshly, but mostly out of curiosity.
The Growlithe's tail drooped, "I did," he replied, "But I can't just go talk to Officer Arcanine, I'd be too embarrassed. I thought if I stayed with you for a while, I could get better so that I wouldn't have to be afraid of doing something wrong!"
Just then, another knock was heard on the door, and Era, a little nervously, went to get it. There stood Officer Arcanine himself, the majestic Fire Type looking at her with kind eyes. "Good morning," he said to her, "I came back to thank you again. The Alakazam revealed the location of all of his stolen goods, and a Team is being sent to retrieve them, he'll be under lock and key for a long time. Thanks to your excellent work, we have this for you." He reached into a pouch handing from his neck and gently took a small object in his mouth with he dropped into Era's paws; a Frenzy Plant TM.
As he turned to leave, Era suddenly got an idea, "Officer Arcanine?" she said, causing him to look back questioningly. "A friend of ours who helped out on this Bounty has been wanting to join your force for a while," she beckoned to the Growlithe who silently came forward, awestruck by the sight of his idol, "Do you think you could take him?"
The Arcanine looked down at the Growlithe with interest, sizing the boy up. "What's your name boy?" he asked.
"Irinen," the Growlithe said rapidly, "My name's Irinen, Mister Officer Arcanine Sir!"
Officer Arcanine laughed, "You've got style kid, good for you. How about I take you back to the station and we'll get you registered?"
Irinen yelped for joy, nodding enthusiastically, "That sounds great!" he cried, trotting after Officer Arcanine as the older Pokemon headed out. He gave one last look at Era and Ethfael, mouthing the words "Thank you" before hurrying out of sight.
Ethfael smiled, pleased that things had worked out for them. "He's a good kid," the Dragonair said, before turning back to the problem at hand. "Alright," he said to the four remaining Pokemon, "I'm afraid we're only allowed to take one recruit at a time, so you can't all join. We'll have to talk about it for a few minutes." The Ivysaur and Cherrim nodded while the Bayleef and Wormadam groaned as they turned back to confer.
After a short conference between them, Riley, Era, and Ethfael turned back to the group. "How would you like to join the Team?" Riley asked, extending a paw to the Ivysaur.
"I would very much like to," the Ivysaur replied.
"But wait a minute!" the Bayleef said, suddenly looking a little alarmed, "You can't take him, he's in ch-"
"It will be fine," the Ivysaur replied, "I am passing on those duties to Marian, I think she's earned it by now."
The Cherrim squeaked in surprise, her crestfallen expression from before changing to one of amazement. "You're going to let me be the Keeper?" she breathed, "Are you sure?"
"Yes, you may take my place," he returned, "I name you the new Keeper of the Keys." His vines extended to hand her a set of keys and an old scroll. "I'm certain that you will do wonderfully."
The Cherrim's eyes lit up with excitement. "Thank you!" she said, coming over to hug him quickly, "Thank you sooo much!" She turned to Era, Ethfael, and Riley, "Hopefully we'll meet again some day. Until then." She smiled once more and walked out, the Bayleef and Wormadam muttering goodbyes and following her.
"What's this Keeper of the Keys thing?" Riley asked.
"Someone who lives in the Labyrinth holds the Keys to the gate that leads into it, and also is the one who holds the map to the maze," the Ivysaur replied, "That Pokemon is seen as most important and sometimes is called to make executive decisions for the Pokemon there. That was my job, but Marian has long wanted the post, so now that I'm a member of your Rescue Team, it is hers for the taking."
Era smiled, "You're really very kind, aren't you?"
The Ivysaur smiled slightly in return, "Why thank you Era, I do appreciate it."

Client: Teddiursa Mission: "I'm got lost trying to find my Honey Jar! Please rescue me and help me find it!" Dungeon: Labyrinth Floors: 23 Rewards: ??? + Sweet Scent Incense + Sweet Scent TM Claimed by Team Rapcha. Apollo & Todd & Patrice Apollo had chosen a new mission. It had read that a Pokemon was lost and scared in the labyrinth, also missing his jar of honey. Not that Apollo really cared about the honey, he only cared about the lost Pokemon. He and his team would rescue the client, and his silly little jar. "Pack up the apples, boys. This is going to be a long mission, and I bet you dinner that we get lost at least once."Apollo and his team were confident as they headed out to the Labyrinth, they had no idea just how many times they'd get lost. Patrice eyed Todd as they neared their destination. Apollo and Patrice both knew he wouldn't opt out to stay with Clark, the newborn Tirtouga. Clark had seen Todd first as he crawled out of his egg, and thought Todd his mother. But you should know Todd by now, he isn't the motherly type. Or any normal type. If Clark wasn't such an angel and so loyal, than someone would have had to stayed with him, but such data was incorrect, and Clark is completely capable of being on his own and staying safe. Team Rapcha also has the coolest room in the whole guild, who would want to leave? 5.0 The team came to a halt as their heads went upwards. They had reached their destination, and were all (excluding Todd) in awe of the height alone of the hedges. As the team craned their necks, they still couldn't see the tops of the giant bushes. On top of the intimidating length of the plants, the sun was nearly gone, giving the hedges and grass a purple tint, and making it even harder to see. Todd would have sighed, but didn't even have enough emotion for it. Apollo was the first to move, and he led the team through the entrance of the Labyrinth. Their entrance was silent, but nothing short of badass. Patrice is quite big for his kind. And, like others of his Sentret brethren, his tail makes his movements awkward. Patrice does not rely on speed, he completely relies on his strength. His power to deal powerful hits, and take them. He does have a bit of a temper on him though, and this causes him to go into a bit of a berserk mode. Just thought I should tell you about Patrice, since he's new to the Team and this is his first mission. "I can barely see a thing. Can you?"Apollo was in the lead, with Todd behind and to the left of him, and Patrice behind and to the right. Apollo's eyes always looked closed, so I don't know how he ever see's anything. Either way, the team was following a narrow path with hedges looming high, high over them. It was dark and kind of cold, but there was no wind. Not even a draft. Even so, some branches would rustle every now and again. Patrice let his eyes scan, but Todd just stared at the ground. Did he not want to step on any flowers? They weren't in the meadow any more...hmm... Openings would sometimes appear on the left or right hand side of Apollo, but he was following the straight path...but how long would it stay straight? Not long...right? No, it turns right now. Apollo looked back, trying to remember, but every time he turned his head everything looked so much the same it looked different, how could it be? Would it have been easier earlier in the day? Was he losing his mind already? The mission had only just started! He shook it off and followed the path to the right, which quickly took another right, and led to a dead end. Apollo looked up, and then around. Was it a trick? Could they go through the bush? No...the residents of this place had to be living and hiding in there...they were already trespassing... "You lost?"Apollo turned and saw a Growlithe where the last bend in the bushes had been. Hadn't it...? Apollo was beginning to feel kind of dizzy. Too many eye tricks up in this place. "Who are you?"The Growlithe's grin grew, showing sharp white teeth. It was a twisted smile, and certainly not a reassuring one. Patrice gave a sigh, having a good hunch to what the enemy Growlithe was about to say. "Your worst nightmare."Patrice looked over at Apollo, and Apollo shrugged out of boredom. No sense engaging in some fire and fire action, it would be a long and tiring battle. Although this Growlithe didn't seem too bothersome. Patrice stepped up towards the Growlithe, quite ready to battle. "You look nothing like my worst nightmare. I'm Patrice, ready to be pummeled into the ground?""I'd like to see you try."The Growlithe smirked, and Patrice just stared at his opponent, summing him up and trying to predict his strategy. 4.5 Patrice made the first move. He propelled himself forward using his tail, and while in the air and flying towards his opponent, he extended his claws outward and raised them to maximize velocity, and hence the pain it would inflict upon the Growlithe. As he neared his enemy, he began to swipe his paws around, quite furiously. He flailed them a bit un-elegantly until he met flesh, and met it hard. The Growlithe yelped in pain before realizing what was happening, and jumped back and out of range. Patrice landed, one paw balled up in a fist and holding him up, while the other was up and behind him. He looked at the ground before raising his head and death glaring his opponent. Who now had a bloody nose. Patrice had drawn first blood, but the battle was not done. The Growlithe growled and ithe'd. This only egged on our Patrice. Smirks were on both of the Pokemon's faces. The Growlithe deducted that Patrice did not rely on speed at all, and would have to focus his own tactics on this. Fire swelled in his throat, turning and spitting and raging. Not unlike Apollo. Fire types don't fall far from the...er...fire tree, it would seem. The Growlithe let it well up inside him, and started dodging and prancing around Patrice like a little girl. Strange, that. Patrice stared and watched as the Growlithe did it's little dance. "You are quite the nightmare, I'll give you that."Of course Patrice snickered a bit at his own comment, but the Growlithe thought he was being honest, and that he was intimidating him. He took it as encouragement, and while being all caught up in his pride, he released his ember attack. He also tripped on a patch of grass. Which aimed this ember attack directly at Patrice's butt. Patrice lept into the air, paws on his rump. He gave a small yelp before landing on his feet, hands still on his rump, staring at the Growlithe with pure hatred. Daggers were literally almost coming out of his eyes. The Growlithe's ears drooped and his eyes got all big and puppylike. But it was no use. No act of cuteness or manliness could undo his girlish skip from before. No excuse for it, really. Patrice charged at his opponent, one hand on his rump, the other swinging with his stride, giving him some momentum and all that jazz. 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.5 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5
