Zhac looked over the eggs curiously as Winderick cared for them. He would, in fact, not mind having a firelizard of his own. All men remembered dreaming of dragons as boys, but he’d liked the idea of firelizards. Dragons were too preposterous a wish for a boy who’d grown up with one foot in a mine, and once he’d started training for whers he’d all but forgotten the beasts. But firelizards made pretty companions, and were personally useful in ways that Zhask could never be. The queen wher was a majestic thing and he loved her in a way hold folk and riders could probably never understand, but firelizards were well known for fetching and carrying, and they were much less threatening than whers. Were he not an honest man, he could have probably threatened Winderick for an egg. The boy could have hardly sought any higher power to please his case considering his position, but he wasn’t so cruel. He could buy an egg if he wished it, in time, without taking advantage of some kid. Winderick would have it hard enough if he didn’t Impress a dragon after all. A firelizard or two would likely be good for him.

Once the fire was set up he laid a hand lightly on Winderick’s shoulder. “We ought to get you back to the barracks.”

Zhac resumed his reserve once they left the room, saying nothing until they reached the barracks. He reminded Winderick then of the stables, and with a curt nod, sent the young Candidate back to bed. Trouble attended to then, he returned to Zhask, who trilled a happy greeting at his appearance. The pair then returned to the dim halls and their secluded rooms.
