Technology has had both positive and negative opinions from the beginning of time. There is a point, a very fine line, when enough is too much (I'm looking at YOU, Apple), but for the most part, getting children introduced to technology is just the way of the world today.

Schools are using computers more and more, and there are more techie jobs out there now than 10-15 years ago. And things like Smartphones are just ways to increase the ease of access to social lives, and a huge asset to the business world.

Parents today come from a generation where the most awesome thing was the Nintendo Entertainment System, in all it's 8 bit glory. Some even experimented with the first Commador 64s, and their parents probably thought the same thing. So outside more, you'll melt your brain, etc, etc.

Also, I noticed post about being driven away from playing outside because of some hot weather. Brother, I'll be frank, I live in Louisiana, and this summer was filled to the brim in days with a high no less than 91* F. And kids of all ages were still out playing and having fun. If that heat if impairing your ability to level your technological morals out, then get a sprinkler.

There are a lot of technological jobs now, but the main point is that we still need physical interaction with humans to function "normally".

You say all the smartphones help with social life? Or are they really a way to make others jealous and angry? I say that because people always are bragging on FB about things. And a specific friend always bitches about everything not going her way, even though she is 20 and has never had a job. Her parents pay for everything. EVERYTHING! Car, car insurance, phone, gas, food, internet, school, clothes, make up, et cetera. She is the most ungrateful moocher ever. She always is updating her FB with her most recent bitchfest... This makes me very very angry. I am really close to deleting her.

Also, there are people who are very happy and post "I love my boyfriend" just about everyday, send baby talk back and forth, and then break up the next week and all you get it "life sucks" "FML" "I stubbed my toe, damn you {insert Ex's name here}" Maybe all my friends are just really immature, but this seems to be all my news feed shows...

What happened to people writing hand-written letters? Hand-written cards? Pictures in the mail? I think we are taking technology for granted.
I disagree; the social networking sites such as FaceBook offers several advantages over hand writing letters, and talking face to face. First and foremost, its so much quicker, obviously. I don't know about you, but I have moderately slow hand writing, and a pretty good typing speed. Secondly, FaceBook gives you the option to block statuses, so Susie Hatemylife can have her statuses posted, but you have the power to block them entirely, or individually, without her knowing (something you really can't do face to face). And all the make ups and break ups, well that's just life. You'll probably hear aobut it one way or another.

Oh, and a note, I didn't say ALL SmartPhones are for social lives. I know many more people who use BlackBerries for business strictly, with normal, non network phones for personal use.

And for the cards, letters, and pictures: Think of it like this: physical things can get destroyed over time. Water, fire, wear and tear, etc. A photo saved on a storage device, or a website for such reasons is much more secure, and much simpler to send to others.

Well, that isn't totally true with the last part. Sites and computers can be hacked. We had our last computer crash and with it went everything. The back up files were corrupt. That was all my music and photos, but I still had my CD's and my SD in my camera with all my pictures. Nothing like that is truely safe. But with one of those fire proof lock boxes you have a pretty good chance of keeping it all safe.

And I didn't realize you could block someone's statuses. I thought you had to block the entire person.
There are ways to safely store them online, there are sites that specifically work as virtual safes in that way (while it IS possible to be hacked, as long as there are skilled programmers, there is always that threat.)

And yes. Hover your cursor over the status, and an X will appear. If you click it, you are given the options to block the use, remove the status from your feed, or cancel.

Plus those sites cost money. I'm a little short on that right this minute. And I really do not trust people, so there's another of my problems.

Hahaha! Do you know how short my news feed just became! It's horrible! XD

too much electronic media is unhealthy and unproductive. i have a huge problem with gen-x and it's convenience-over-efficiency ideals.

i remember Earth Day last year. that whole 1-day-without electricity pledge. disney channel ripped it off with a 1-hour version, which if you know your Geography and understand the concept of Time Zones you would know doesn't do anything. what's worse, is when i went to church a few days before to tell people about Earth Day, and talked about both of these versions of it, hardly anyone even knew about it. and when i explained it to them, none of them were interested. in fact, one boy did talk about it with me, sort of, but he was truely and honestly terrified by the idea of even going on a camping trip for one day without an electronic device, r even of going a single hour without his iphone. his eyes went wide and everything! gonk

it is sad. sad i realy hate to see people encouraging their children not to be practical and responcible hard workers. i have taken a liking to that show, World's Strictest Parents, even if i don't nessesarilly agree fundamentally with the rules of those households, only because i support the values that those households teach to otherwise spoiled teen brats. i am glad to know that Hot Topic is advertising it as well.

I would easily do this, but it would be a little bit hard. Since I have online classes they have a strict participation and attendance policy. I can easily go without a phone or computer. I barely watch TV. But our stoves are all electric. We would have to either buy or borrow a gas outside stove. Or we could make a fire pit. I've always wanted a good outdoor fire pit.

yeh, it would be tough on some people, thanks to the way society has adopted technology as nessesary. same way that not having a credit card is as tough as having one.

Yea. The governement and all is horrible. How are people supposed to buy a car with no credit? You're supposed to have a credit card to build your credit. Well you can't get one unless you have credit and you can't have a phone plan unless you have credit! So in order for me to build my credit I must get some credit out of thin air so I can have enough credit to get a credit card! Wow. I think that's the most times I have said "credit" in a day! It's all just a scam...

thing for me, i keep getting credit cards issued to me. i took one back before that whole Credit Act was passed, and turns out the scam was in the way they changed up their contract with me without warning. xp

Oh that's always fun. I just get the blank credit cards in the mail. I stopped opeing them after the first one has an interest rate of 25%. And I'm not joking. I'm not old enough to have one anyways. Now, in MD, you have to be 21 to get a credit card. And if you're younger you need a co-signer. FOR A CREDIT CARD! It's such bull!

damn... iii-_-

Yea... You want to see some screwed up poloticians? Come to Maryland! Did you know that it is illegal to use a tanning bed if you're under 18? Yea! That one just passed this summer! Although I can kind of see why, but then they are just going to go bake themselves in the sun and get melanoma! *grumbles*

it is interesting
and perhaps ironic

that the root Greek word for technology, "technos"

can mean "child"

(hence a "new creature")
