Phemie smiles, nodding her head towards Hazel with an amused look on her face. Letting her features relax again, she regards Juri with an intelligent, glinting brown gaze. "Why, the words led me here, of course. I'm a student - and currently a teacher, it seems - of language. I have been studying it for a long time, now... As I tell my students each term, it's 'The magic of language and the language of magic.'" She pauses, noticing the woman's ale still sitting forlornly near Hazel. "Do you want me to get that?" She adds, in a totally different tone, before switching back to the previous serious, almost excited tone. "Words have great power, you know. That's an old wives tale, even sorcerors have said so. But it's true as true is true." She grins slightly at this last sentance, and, seeming to decide that's the end of the sentance, she stirs her spoon in the bowl before her.

Eyeing the room now and then as she awaits an answer from Juri, she lets her gaze wander back to Hazel, as she visibly considers calling the Herbology Professor over. The wafting scent of her stew belays that idea - Phemie has experience with Hazel's food-obsessed little friends. Again, visibly deciding to wait 'til both Juri and she are finished, she tucks back in to her food. Phemie smiles slightly as she finishes some amusing chain of thought in her mind, and eyes Hazel - the joke was clearly on her. The look is not malefic, more of a forgiving friendly tone, but is quickly washed away as she looks back at Juri expectantly, waiting an answer.

Juri smiles in amusement at the energetic change she notices in Phemie as she starts talking about her job. "I can see you are an enthusiast in your line of work just as I am in mine. I've met some of the students that you have taught before, and they seem to benefit greatly from taking your class. I should probably recommend your teachings to my cousins." She takes another mouthful of the stew before turning her attention to the mug of ale sitting now at the bar counter.

"Oh, don't trouble yourself over it, Phemie." The woman rolled her wrist towards the direction of the mug, and murmured, "Levatais." The cup steadily moves up on its own accord, and then floats over to their table, weaving in and out of other people walking in its path. As it comes near, Juri reaches out and grasps the handle before bringing it to her and taking a sip.

"Wow...it really is good ale," the sorceress chuckles, setting it down on the table. "My compliments to the chef." Upon seeing her companion looking somewhere else, her gaze follows the other and returns to the bar counter, where the seated figure of the botany professor catches her eye. "Isn't that Professor Woodrow? She teaches Herbology, right?"

Taking a small sip of her drink, Hazel looks up from her study and notices the other professors sitting nearby. Shutting the book with a snap, she tucks it beneath her arm and rises fluidly from her chair with a loud scraping sound. Snatching up her staff, she gathers up her glass and takes one last sip before beginning to make her way across to the other two. Standing beside their table, she clears her throat and smiles towards them both, her hazel eyes full of warmth and compassion. "Good evening to you both.. I hope you don't mind my joining you, it gets a little lonely sometimes. Without waiting for confirmation, she reaches over and pulls a chair over, seating on it slowly as she looks between them both. Her face is rather plump and round, and as always there is a large smudge of ink upon her nose yet she seems completely oblivious to it's prescence. Settling herself in the chair, she props the staff against the nearest thing, which so happens to be an adjacent table and sets her book and drink down. "It is good to see again Phemie, the summer seemed extremely long this time. Did you encounter any interesting prose while you were absent?"

Blinking suddenly, she turns to regard Juri and frowns softly as she tries to puzzle out the womans name. Finally after much thought and deliberation, she draws a blank and smooths out her features. "I do apologise, I have not yet introduced myself. I'm Hazel Woodrow, herbology professor. I don't think I have seen you around miss.... " Waiting to Juri to deliver her name, she smiles and shuffles slightly on her chair as she giggles. "Briar... cut that out will you" Turning to face Juri again, Hazel smiles vacantly and reaches to take a sip of her drink. The sleeves of her robe are slightly dirty and bear many ink stains around the hem. Yet again, Hazel seems completely unaware of this fact and happily grasps her drink to take a few mouthfuls. Placing the drink down, she regards Juri once more as she addresses her again "Do forgive me, I might twitch occasionally. I have rats you see." Smiling slightly at this, she continues on with her sentence "I'm sorry if I seem a little distant my dear, I've just undertaken a lengthy uhm " Blinking, she thinks a moment and adjusts her glasses "Ah, yes. A lengthy brewing process in my greenhouse. I was trying out a new concoction and it required a lot more thought than I thought it would" Smiling vacantly once more, she turns to face her drink and sits staring at the wall.

While Hazel sits, a small lump travels down her arm and towards her hand, finally materializing as a rat nose and whiskers. The rat sniffs several times and slowly lowers itself out of the sleeve and down onto the table. Tentatively the rat turns towards Phemie and begins to scurry across the table towards the slice of the half eaten bread. Glancing up at Phemie, the rat shifts closer to the slice and starts nibbling it while she darts glances up at Phemie. For a few moments, Hazel seems oblivious and in a dream like state before she snaps back and turns to look towards the rat. "Briar Rose! You sneak.... come back here at once" The rat gives a look towards Phemie and steals another bite of the bread before scurrying over to Hazel and scrambling up her arm. "What did I tell you the last time, hrm? If you do that once more, Phemie here will turn you into a toad... or if she doesn't, I surely will. You're much more hassle than Blackberry. She's coming next time."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 24, 2006 5:31 am

"Yes," Phemie stifles a laugh, "yes, she does." Her eyes follow Woodrow's passage to the table in silence, a smile twinkling at their corners. As Hazel arrives and greets them, Phemie stays silent, a hand over her mouth as she attempts to stifle the laugh brought on by the ink smudge. Phemie eats and drinks in silence as she watches Hazel talking with Juri, winking at the Charms professor as Hazel mentions that she has rats, not noticing the lump moving down her sleeve.

Phemie watches the rat surreptitiously, pretending not to notice the thievery as she tucks into the last few dregs of her bowl of stew. She frowns menacingly at the rat as Hazel berates it, the smile still evident. "I think Blackberry came along too, Hazel. Didn't she, little Rose?" Phemie jokingly wags a finger at the rat before turning her attention back to Hazel.

She coughs, and nods, grinning widely. "Interesting prose, you asked? Ay, so I did Hazel. Here, I'll give you a sample of the rather interesting - to you I will bet - legend I read over in the south. It's about swamp-tangle - the one that grabs people and drowns them to nourish itself." She pauses, pulling a slip of parchment from somewhere or other about her belt.

"And I'll deal with that smudge for you, too." Saying this, Phemie shuffles closer to Hazel, laying the parchment out flat on the table. Before anyone can mention that it is blank, she stands a bowl at the top to hold it open, and takes Hazel's hand and places it on the lower end. "Varos, varos," she intones in some liquidic dead language, placing a finger on the smudge, a huge grin on her face, "salic varos verol. Scriptus."

Removing her fingers and absently taking up her drink, Phemie smiles as she watches the smudge darken and move off Hazel's nose and down beneath her robe, re-appearing moments later on the back of her hand. From here, it flows down her finger, and spreads out from there in coils and curls across the page, finally resolving into words in Common dialect. There is even a tiny illustration in one corner of a swamp and a mass of flailing, tentacular branches.

Leaning over the parchment, Phemie frowns fleetingly. "Not my best work dear, but I'm sure it will do. Perhaps your students will enjoy the tale, too."

Wandering up to the outside of the Tavern, he rubs his mud stained face and steps up to the door. Slipping inside, he glances around as the door slams shut behind him. Blinking as his dark brown eyes adjust to the dimly lit interior, he can mak out a group of three women sitting together at a table. As he watches, a large smudge of ink trails off one woman and forms the words on a page. Widening his eyes, he stumbles backwards into a chair and shakes his head at such foolish nature. Walking nervously forwards on bare feet, he pulls a hand through his tangled brown hair and sighs.

Brown eyes glitter out from beneath rather long lashes, seeming girl like and more feminine. His hair hangs loosely down to his shoulders and has leaves and twigs strewn about in it as if for decoration or carelessness. His skin is tanned from the amount of time he has spent in the outdoors and he wears a rather baggy shirt that is splattered with mud and stained with grass and other things. His plain brown trousers haven't faired much better and stop about ankle length, holes and tears criss crossing all the way down. Mud stains these too and they are also far too large for him.

Standing at a rather small 4'9, he seems rather small for his age. His features suggest an age around fourteen though his eyes show wisdom far greater than that. He also has an aura of magic about him but he himself is unaware of this face. Clearing his throat, a blush appears on his cheeks and he rubs his elbows as he regards the women in turn. A large bruised lump is upon his forehead, nestled within the lump is a large half healed cut. Various bruises and scrapes adorn his body but the most striking thing about this boy is the choker he wears around his neck.

The choker is made from a dark black material and encases his throat rather tightly so that it peers out above his shirt, the laces of which are half undone. The odd thing about the choker is what dangles directly beneath it, resting on the hollow of his throat. It is a circle with a cross through it from top to bottom, in alignment with his body. The ends flare out slightly and are wider than the centre of the cross. In the centre is a small circular light blue almost translucent gemstone. Below this cross sits a tear shaped dark blue stone, with white veins running through it, almost having the look of a lapis lazuli about it. The cross and circle itself is made from a silvery metal and has small stones set into it, mostly in tones and hues of blue and green. To any magic users in the room, this pendant would glow and pulsate if they could see it. A soft blue aura could be seen coming from the pendant and encasing the boy, making him shimmer faintly. Of course, that is to those who can see this. To most others it would just make them feel tingly or slightly cold.

Staring up at them with his brown eyes, he clears his throat again and seems like he wants to talk to them but doesn't open his mouth. It is like he doesn't know how to. Instead, he sends telepathic waves out to any who may hear him. This may be none of the women, but he has at least tried.

If you can hear me, I am seeking help. I wish to find the thing that is Syutaka. I don't know what this thing is, it is only a name in my head. I don't know if it is a person or a place, but I know I must go there to this thing. Can you please help me?

A faint blush creeps across his features and he watches them for any sighns of a reaction as he shuffles nervously on his bare, muddy feet. Hoping, waiting and deciding if he has made the right choice.

Juri raises her eyes to the sight of Professor Woodrow and smiles. "Good evening," she responds, setting down her mug to divide herself between her companions. At the woman's questioning, she laughs lightly. "I am the new professor of Charms and Magical Spells, Juri Ishida. Pleased to make your aquaintance."

Professor Woodrow certainly is a woman of peculiarities, Juri muses, as the other woman explained why she might be twitching. "Rats? No, I don't mind at all. Even if I'm more of a feline person, rats and mice aren't part of my diet," she chuckles. "My cat Scorn may like your friends though, so for their sake, you probably shouldn't bring them into my classroom."

The sorceress tilts her head in interest as Phemie comments on reading a story over the summer, and that she would show them and take care of Hazel's ink smudges at the same time. Her eyebrows shoot up to see the ink traveling gradually down the woman's skin and to a piece of parchment Phemie had laid out. "That's amazing, Phemie," she intones, tapping the paper. "Where did you learn that from?"

Her head swivels around sharply to look at a boy standing near them. His message was ringing in her head. What did he want with Syutaka? She turns to look at her companions, to see if they heard as well.

Staring for a while at the rat, a vacant expression forms on her face and she blinks slightly before responding to Phemie with a vaguely startled voice. "She did?" Hazel blinks and looks around for the rat as she frowns slightly "I don't think she did Phemie" She turns and pulls up her sleeves to check for the miscreant before it dawns on her that Phemie is joking. Frowning still, she listens half heartedly to Phemie until she mentions about Swamp-tangle. Her interest is immediately caught and she stares at Phemie with eager eyes, glittering at the prospects. "Swamp-tangle? Oh Phemie do tell me more." Frowning slightly, she moves to rub her nose and blinks "Smudge? What smudge dear?" Adjusting her glasses on the bridge of her nose, she blinks as she relaxes momentarily and listens to Phemie intoning. Eyes widening as the smudge moves, she giggles girlishly as it tickles vaguely on its passage down her arm and to the page. Watching in child-like amazement as the script forms, she peers down at it and immediately begins reading furiously, ignoring anyone else in the room.

She doesn't even hear the boy approaching as she reads down the page but she does hear his voice in her head and blinks slightly. Looking up, she registers him and then looks around "Did one of you just say something?" Without waiting for an answer, she lowers her glance back down to the page to consume the words. Nodding at this point and that, she pulls a pencil out of her robe "Mind if I mark on this Phemie? Good thanks" Her voice is rushed and almost excitable as she scrawls lazily over the script, jotting down notes here and there, totally ignoring the stranger now in her pursuit of knowledge.

Ophelie ignores the boy as he enters, and taps the paper momentarily whilst looking up at Juri. "In charms, one has better control if one understands the inner nature of the thing to be charmed, no?" Without waiting for an answer, she sits back, her gaze moving lazily over to the boy as she continues. "The true name of things gives ultimate control over those things, just as with people. Do you know this person, Woodrow?" She asks, moving her gaze from the boy to the engrossed herbology professor. Smiling slightly and shaking her head, she moves to prod the woman.

Starting as the message filters through, she stops in mid-prod and turns her gaze on the boy fully as she mulls him over silently to herself. "A magic user, hmm? At such a young age? No, this child is not what he appears. Perhaps then, he is a bad spirit - but they do not appear such as this, and certainly not bearing the name of our great leader. Perhaps.. No, that's not possible either. Wrong colour."

Silence slowly settles over the inn, with even the things on the wall remaining quiet.

Phemie glances at Juri from the corner of her eye, still considering possibilities. She slowly raises a finger and beckons the boy to her chair. Ensuring she makes it room-wide in case the other professors do indeed pickup sends, she frames a few words to send.

Here. Sit still, and tell us something that will prove you are no malefic being. Can you not speak with your mouth, or have you no tongue?

She pauses, allowing the thought to pass across, and considering how to phrase the next bout. Gauging the power he exudes and eyeing the blue glow with a wary eye, she finally forms the next send for him.

You will be bound if you try to leave without proving yourself malefic or good. If you cannot prove either way, you will be made to leave this place.

She gestures again, her features arranged in a strange mixture of reprimand and understanding. Her sends are soft and easy, not rough like those of some less practiced - the trace is a strange one for these lands, indicating her teacher was from a far away place. The send trace does not match her speech accent, and as such, if the others in the room pick up the send they may be a little startled.

There is no escape, even for your power - two magic users against one, and Woodrow here has a strong will when she can concentrate.

A pause as she considers this last part's impact, and then she adds, softly: We will not harm you unduly, however.

He stares at Ophelie as she speaks in his mind, his eyes growing wider and wider with fear that he tries hard to suppress. Seeing the gesture, he shuffles across to stand before the woman, his hair falling over his eyes as he lowers his head. Swallowing, he shuffles nervously on his feet as waves of sadness and slight fear roll off him. Sniffling slightly, he rubs his nose and looks up at her as he considers her words. Tilting his head, he sniffs the air and nods to himself as if confirming something. He remains standing as he looks at her, trying not to fear the three magic users he can see before him. Slowly he begins to send to the whole room, his sending filled with fear and seeming slightly shaky.

I am a dragon.. I think. From the reaches. I had an accident and I can't remember much but I know I was a dragon. I woke up as one. Unless that was a dream

Realising he is babbling slightly, he swallows and refocuses himself as he regards them, taking a deep breath to calm himself. The sending strengthens slightly and has less of the fearful content as he calms his mind to speak to this and convince them of his worth.

I don't know how to speak in a normal tongue, I can't remember. My name is

Pausing slightly, he rubs his hand and shrugs slightly

I can't remember my name. Not since I fell. I remember someone telling me that if I was ever lost or in trouble, that I was to find Syutaka. I don't know what this is, and I'm sorry if I have upset you by saying this. But I am lost, I have no memories and I...

Shifting slightly, he looks at them all and decides that the best way is to tell them everything that has happened, maybe they will be able to help him. Sitting slowly down beside Ophelie's chair, he begins sending to the room, with pictures if they can handle them.

I first remember waking as a dragon on a ledge Here he gives a picture of himself as seen in the river, a beautiful light blue/silvery white dragon with ornate horns flaring from crests on his head. His nostrils have long whiskers that curl upwards to the sky and then plunge down to the ground. His scales glitter in the sunlight as he stares at himself in the water. The sending then continues slowly as he tells his story.

I knew I had to get help and one word I remembered was Syutaka. Grandfather's face came to me in my dream and whispered that if I was in trouble or lost, I was to find this thing and it would see me safely. There is an agreement or something. I don't remember. I just knew I had to come to the place with a Syutaka. I followed the river and came upon humans who chased me. Then I dreamt that I was visited by a young girl who was warm to touch. She faded into petals and when I woke, I had this form and this necklace

His sendings grow stronger as he gains more courage from telling them the honest truth. He hopes and prays that this will be enough for them.

I had these clothes and this is all I remember. The girl was gone. I don't understand what is wrong with me, I touch the water and I can see where the water goes. Thats how I found this place. Please don't hurt me, I don't mean to harm you. I just want to know why I can't remember. I've travelled so far... through wood, frightening wood that called out to me and told me I was a child of the water, ice and high reaches and called me an aged one. Please, all I want to do is find the building that is close to here. I want to find my grandfather again, and remember.

He finishes the sending, looks at them all and then slumps slightly as he places his hands into his lap. Shaking his shoulders dejectedly, he fights back the emotions that he has felt since embarking on this long journey. How he wishes they believe him for it is the truth, he doesn't lie. He couldn't. Something inside of him refuses to allow a lie to touch his lips. Looking up at them, he wipes the tears from his eyes as he waits for their verdict.

Juri hardly hears what Phemie is saying; her gaze is fixed on the newcomer. Green eyes flicker towards the Tongues teacher as she beckons the boy over to their table. As he walks over, the Charms professor takes him in. What did he want? Why was he looking for Syutaka?

The thoughts being sent between the two were picked up by the silver-blue haired woman, and she sets her elbow on the table, chin on her palm. At Phemie's soft words of comfort that the three women wouldn't harm him, she nods gently.

The words being sent between the two echos in her mind; she looks at the boy sympathetically. She believes him. Her magics tell her that he is not lying. But this is not for her to decide alone. She glances at Phemie and Hazel to try and gauge what their decision is. Because they do know of a Syutaka.

What do you two think? she sends to the other women, blocking the words out from the boy's mind. This is a private conversation.

Hazel sits furiously scribbling away and ignores Phemie for the time being, that is until the sendings begin. At first, she just periodically looks up at the boy and then at Phemie but as the mental talk goes on further, she stops scrawling on her scroll and clasps her hands together. As Phemie converses with the boy, she studies him, seeing the glowing aura about him and where it comes from. Pushing her glasses up from the bridge of her nose again, she nods as Phemie tells the boy they won't harm him unduly.

"Yes yes, thats quite right dear boy, we won't harm you if you truly need help"

Knowing her words are most likely forgotten already, she leans closer to catch the sendings the boy is throwing to the room and nods thoughtfully. Frowning slightly at Phemie, she shrugs as she already knows a bit about the woman, enough not to worry at this turn of accent. Listening honestly to the young boy before them, she begins to absently mumble beneath her breath as she watches his amulet. Feeling it responding to her words, she smiles absently and falls silent again as she listens to him. Not having too much skill with telepathy, she decides not to send anything of her own and lets Phemie converse with him. Feeling the sadness and the upset from him at his present state, she wants to get up and wrap her arms around him but knows that could be trouble.

Slipping into her own thoughts, she recalls a time where she did such a thing and shudders slightly before dragging her attentions back to the boy. Why is it so hard to concentrate these days. Sighing wistfully, she nods at the young boy and turns to Phemie to observe her reaction. Hearing Juri's voice in her head, she frowns and turns to look at her a moment before frowning. Familiarising herself with the professor, she projects her thoughts out very carefully so as not to damage the professor. She has been know to cause minor headaches with her sendings at times because she was so exuberant about something.

I feel he is telling us the truth, he feels earthy to me, but yet he feels cold. I cannot discern anything other than that from him I'm afraid

Her sending is smooth and slow, as if she is taking great care over sending this to the two women, again it is a private sending and the boy will not be able to hear them. Rubbing her nose in thought, she pushes up her glasses and stares at him, clearly holding herself back as she watches with an eager face. A dragon? Here? He might know of some interesting foliage where he comes from. Focus Hazel.

Glancing down at her pet, she frowns as the animal wanders along the table and peers over the edge at the new person. Wuffling her nose, the rat twitches her whiskers and spreads her legs out as she approaches the edge of the table to look down. Squeaking slightly, she jumps back and starts to clean herself as if she hadn't just jumped. Peering back over the edge, she seems almost as interested in the boy as the women are.
