I saw a kid reading a guide on how to smoke marijuana at a bookstore tonight, and I guess it made me wonder: is it taking freedom to far when people are allowed to publish books on how to break the law?

No- If this were so, writing about the citizenship of black people would have been illegal in the earlier 1800's.
An unjust law is no law at all.
Edit- Actually, I can't think of a reason for that book to exist- If you can't figure out how to roll a joint or smoke a bowl, you have bigger things to worry about with that low mental capability. Like remembering how to keep your heart beating, or thinking about how to breathe.

If something needs to be censored then it obviously shouldn't be placed in that area if they think it's too bad to place on a specific area. That'd be like censoring South Park enough so it could be watchable on Cartoon Network. In all reality though, I don't really believe in censorship. It's going to be watched by a public and they've already heard what shouldn't have been heard. Besides, it's not like the censored word couldn't be figured out by an average higher-up Elementary kid. However, now that we are on the topic, why should people not be allowed to publish books on marijuana? It may be against the law but that doesn't make it right. We've been on the topic before and it isn't all that bad if you use it right. More importantly, if we REALLY want to get at the problems and faults here, who allowed the kid to read such a book? He obviously didn't go alone to the store or whatever and pick it up. Either his parent allowed him or he was old enough to go their alone or with some friends and read it; either way, it shouldn't be considered bad if that is the case.
On another note, I don't understand why you would need to read a book on how to smoke pot. I mean, all it is is breathing in, then breathing the smoke in deeper, then exhaling. If you can't do that, then I question on how you know how to breath.

I don't think so. In some places pot is legal to smoke and own.
There are thousands of websites all over the internet that tell you each step in how to make these illegal drugs and narcotics. So it really doesn't shock me that there are books being published about how to use them. I can't remember where I heard it, but there was a guy that was handing out pamplets on how to use crack, I think it was in New York though. It's been a while since I heard the story on the news though so my story may not be very accurate.

******** censorship!
the First Amendment clearly states that we have the right to Freedom of Speach, so censhorship shouldn't ever be enforced!
public television should NOT be censored! if people don't wanna hear it, they should change the channel. if parents don't want their kids watching it, they should make rules for their household, and enforce them. that's what parents are supposed to do, that's their occupation description.
what books are sold in stores publically, should not be censored by anyone but the owner of that store. it's THEIR store! they can showcase whatever the hell they want!
that said, it is still possible to go to far, but that is only in the case that you break a different law. for example, if a racist wants to shout "heil hitler" and call every black guy a "******", he has the right. but if he threatens to kill a jew, that's illegal because it's "conspiracy to commit murder" or something. if he spraypaints "niggger" all over someone's house, that's vandalism.
and if someone is putting porn on the front shelves, the store should be for adults only.
america's guiding and defining principles are suppose to be, and always should be, Liberty and Equality!

I don't know...I dislike censorship of ideas or opinions, but I also think it's a little outrageous to have a how-to on an illegal activity. To me, common sense just says if you don't want people to do certain things, then instructions shouldn't be available in their local book store. (It's actually a Barnes and Noble, so it's not like it's privately owned or anything. And the kid was 15 or 16, I think.)

Hell, if someone is dumb enough not to know how to just conform and follow his friends and have to read a book on how to do it, I say let him. It's entertaining.

Are you kidding me? It's not a book on how to murder, smoking weed doesn't hurt anyone. There's nothing wrong with breaking an unjust law.

Freedom cannot be taken too far. Anyone can post an idea of how to commit a crime; so long as they don't participate in the crime itself, it's not against the law and supported by their freedom of speech (assuming they are legal Americans)
Also, I've always held onto the philosophy that upholding to a law that doesn't cause bodily harm to another human being but yet is still illegal, they are supporting that law, and thus should break it if they see fit. Now, I don't say this to justify ***** or murder or anything of that sort. I just say that if it doesn't cause harm to another in some way (not counting yourself. What stupid act you care to do against your body is your business) shouldn't be illegal anyway.

For the specific example, the kid could have been reading a book on how to plant, prepare, and smoke marijuana legally. But, if he is caught and it someone proves that he followed that book word for word on how to do it, the publisher of the book could be sued. There are a lot of things in this world that is public and probably would do better off without for you can search up how to kill someone easily, how to break into cars, houses, etc., etc.
