I first saw this clip on Animal Planet's Untamed and Uncut. It's a terrifying video of an arabian fine harness pleasure class that went horribly wrong. This is one of the biggest horse fiascos that I've ever seen (but I am sure there are some that are worse!).
There were also many things that could have been done differently, and I think this video is actually a very good learning tool. So, let's dissect it and discuss what we would do in such a situation.
Here is the Animal Planet clip, with commentary and slo-mo.
Here is the original, uncut clip.
~~~
I think the biggest mistake was the ringmaster who thought it was a good idea to get between a half-blind horse and the arena wall. Many people were shouting way too loudly (I love how people thinking screaming "whoa" in a horse's ear will magically stop him), and there seems to be a lot of macho super-hero moves going on that are not necessary and even counter productive.
When disaster strikes, how you behave depends on your training. In all my equestrian education, I was never taught what to do when crashes and smashes would occur until I became an instructor - and even then that education was a little limited. When people have no preparation or training, they tend to overreact, get stupid, and panic.
My friend showed me that a while ago.
She told me the horse died though... So happy hes alright.
Edited to say what I think I would do...
If I were in that situation, I would probably get the big announcer thing to tell all of the people watching to shut up... Bring everyone into the middle, and try to keep the first horse out side of the centre, it would eveeentually stop if he ran long enough.. right?
To be honest, I have no idea what I would do. Hard to say...
Wow. I have never seen anything that bad, though I have been in that kind of situation before.
It wasn't horse showing, actually. I was showing my dairy cow, and she's small, she's a miniature Jersey. But she went into a sudden heat, and in the last class of the day, charged me. She rammed me against the fence, and then took off again. The judge grabbed her halter and ended up flipping her over, but the halter broke. The dads around the ring got in and took the other animals from the kids, and everyone besides myself and the dads got outside. Eventually, we were able to get my cow into a small pen, but it wasn't fun. =w =;
But what I would have done was get everyone to quiet down, and try to get the disabled person (Terri) up ON the judges stand, so she wouldn't get hurt. And the people on the outside were flipping their hands at the horse, and one can only take that as a command to go faster. And the people shouting 'whoa' wouldn't exactly help either.
So many mistakes were made in this situation but the biggest one was that the people trying to calm the horses were not communicating and in a situation like that, the most important thing is communication. I would have expected people to shut up and work together to corner the horse in half of the arena instead of giving it the entire place.
The peroblem with Arabs in contrast to... Quarter Horses and Warmbloods is that I find they tend to be less rational. A QH will slow down in time because he's not accomplishing anything. The Arabs run ecause the CAN.
In general, a quieter audience, a more unified group of people trying to help could have gotten the situation under control faster.
So much could have been done to sort this out quickly and safely!!
1. Blinkers - a couple of horses were wearing them and horses rely on sight to escape danger. So the ones with blinkers were screwed and would have panicked more.
2. The other horses - you get them out as soon as possible. It doesn't matter where to but you lead them out of the arena one by one.
3. The centre seating area - what?! why are there so many people sat in the ring?! You have only the people necessary in the ring eg. judges and riders. No one else. Ever.
4. The ringmaster - seriously? Standing in front of a horse in a panic won't stop it. You'll get yourself hurt, idiot.
5. Probably the biggest problem, the spectators and judges - that was a shambles. You do not run around, chasing horses and screaming. You gather together and drive the horse in a ring until it gets tired and slow down.
If any of this event had been done properly the danger would have been vastly reduced.
