So I was in my pool early in the morning today and it was very quite. Then all of the sudden the katydids started to sing in unison, and the world was filled with their music for several minutes. This strange event felt very ominous to me, so it got me thinking. Omens? Most every culture has some myth about omens, and several of them pertain to animals. Such as a white elephant spotting in Siam, the black cat crossing in England, and so on. I started wondering "how did these omens come into existence", and "is there is any validity to them." If the omens are really signs placed by the gods then what ever happened to free will? Do the omens loose some of their credibility because the animals have to chose to make a noise, or move closer to you? Because many of these omens were created many years ago, and no one can track down the person who first recognized the omen, it is really hard to get much of any information on this subject. So I look to you fellow members of Blessed Be. What is your opinion on the subject? Does free will disprove them? Do you have any theories or links to other sights as to why a specific omen was created? Are there any Omens pertaining to animals that you would like us to discuss? Basically, Omens about Animals, what do you think about them?

I consider animal omens to be part of folklore, and to that end, I believe that every myth or legend or tale has some grain of truth at its core. I do believe that animals are sometimes messengers, but that's all; they are not absolute prophets. A good example is the traditional black cat; I've had them cross my path before, and nothing particularly bad has happened. That being said, I believe that they perhaps come as a warning, and so I remain cautious.

i own a black cat XD and he has crossed my path 1000000000 times, nothing bad has happened i wouldn't doubt if some of these beliefs originated from peoples actual experiences at one point such as perhaps someone really did have bad lucky when a cat walked passed them or they saw ravens near their home and soon after a family member died and they told people and then people started to avoid these animals and think of them in negative ways just a theory.

They aren't real to me.
I've crossed millions of black cats without a single bad thing happening to me and I hear the owls cry every night and nobody has died.

i saw an owl in my backyard once about an arms length away, small barn owl but Ive never seen one around here before
i really don't believe in animal "omens" so to say, they creep me out sometimes but i do believe that animals do try to give us messages though

I'm pritty shure their all most all rubbish, unless the sercumstances are huge. Like: if you live in a populated area and a wild bird flys into your home and drops dead. Yeah I think that would have to be seariouse 'bad luck'.

I've seen many a black crow outside my window and no one I know is dead yet, which also argues if animals bring omens. but I do think that perhaps there is a bit of truth to it all, for usually when I see a crow, there is a higher chance that something is "dying". Not so much physically, but more metaphorically. Like a change of thinking or acting, or even that something that is habitual is going to reach an end. But then again, maybe that is my mind searching for that grain of salt. I would have to argue more so that animals are messengers, but man has has a tendency to assume certain animals to bring certain messages even though that isn't always true. It is fun to think about it though. 3nodding

Well, you all seemed to have hit my views exactly.
~Animals can be messengers. This is clear with actually noticeable signs, such as a cat coming inside because rain is coming, or antelope fleeing because a tiger is nearby. Those are clear and logical messages. I also feel that they can bring less rational messages, stranger things have happened.
~Traditional Omens are just myth. I believe the true omens are the one you feel yourself. Such as the Katydids creating an ominous feeling. Since I felt the omen and did not know the omen, I feel that there may have been a message. But that is more just animal messages and not omens.
~Grain of Truth. Because they are omens there must be some grain of truth to them. I personally believe that it is because a long time ago someone experienced a message from an animal, and then decided that every time that animal made the same action as the message, that it must always mean the same thing. It is just superstition.
So I guess that clears a lot of things up. I was actually hoping someone would be on the other side of the fence. I wanted to know their perspective and views on the matter.

i dont know much about the official omens but i tend to just listen to nature as it comes for example, when i hear a crow i look at it, if it flies i let my stare follow it when a dog crosses my way or gives me attention for no reason i stop and give it attention back cause maybe they are trying to tell me something, making me wait for a second longer so i will not see/do/miss something on my path i dont know how to explain it i just feel like i have to listen to anything that might be a signal cause even if its not who says its not? anyway its just a feeling

I dont believe in "omens," but animals can send us messages. I have had an expirience with them once. I was riding home with my mom, and my dog Kairi started whining. It sounded like she was trying to say somthing, so I told my mom to turn around. Later, we got to my grandparents house and Gramma had broken her hip. Grampa was away, and she would have been stuck there for who knows how long. So animals can send messages, but their not "omens."
