Tarot blinked, trying to keep up with the pace. Apparently she'd hit upon a subject the girl was passionate about. "Don' really like swee' st'ff," she said, shrugging slightly. "I p'fer fruits 'n' things like that." Nothing beat naturally occuring sugars, in the toddler's book.

Lilah was a little taken aback. She...didn't like sweet stuff? Huh.

The little girl wasn't one to judge, so Tarot didn't like candy, that was...that was cool. Not everyone had to be like her (and lots of other kids, she guessed). If everyone liked the same things, Lilah decided that life might be pretty boring, actually!

"Oh...well...They have this one counter that has dried fruit too!" She pointed to the back corner. "Momma says some people consider it candy, and so they put it in here too! I tried the dried pineapple, and they were really yummy! But the dried banana," Lilah made a face. "They were icky."

Dry.......fruit? But, wasn't the point of fruit to be all soft and juicy and messy and delicious? She looked at Lilah a little suspciously. This girl had to be teasing her. "Who'd dry ou' a fruit," she asked, crossing her arms and looking around the store. She certainly didn't seen any dried-up fruit bits. Seriously, that couldn't be right.....

Lilah shrugged happily. "I'unno!" she said. "Let's go ask!" She grabbed Tarot's hand and pulled her forward, and let go as she darted forward, assuming the little girl would follow. Her rats scurried after her, going ahead of her, then stopping to let the two catch up.

The blond girl reached the back counter and stared. It was rather small (after all, dried food didn't need that much space and not many people were there for dried fruit anyway), and the older gentleman that manned the counter smiled down at them as the approached him.

"How can I help you lovely young ladies?" he asked cheerfully.

"We wanna know why you'd dry out a fruit?" She eyed the pineapple that was sitting out on the too high to reach.

The man reached over and handed each little girl a piece of dried pineapple as he launched into answering the question.

"Dried fruit has a long tradition of use dating back to the fourth millennium BC in Mesopotamia, and is prized because of its sweet taste, nutritive value and long shelf life*," he continued on, but Lilah had stopped listening as she happily bit into the pineapple. It was crunchy on the outside and the burst of sweet and pineapple taste exploded in her mouth.

Yum!

(*Wiki entry on dry fruit. XD )

Tarot was staring at the piece of pineapple in her hand, and occasionally nibbling it. Pineapple was a bit sweet for her though, and dried stuff was much worse! She stared up at the man with big round eyes, only understanding maybe a handful of the words he was using. Mesopo-what?

The older man stopped his long-winded speech, realizing suddenly that the two standing before him weren't comprehending some...well, most of what he had to say.

"Oh, do you not like it?" he asked Tarot. "You could try another?" he offered kindly. He hadn't thought about if BOTH of them wanted pineapple, or wanted it at all.

Lilah had polished off hers, and had been trying to follow along, but it had made her a bit cross-eyed. Dexter, her own personal thief, had scurried up to Tarot and was contemplating how to snatch the pineapple out of the girls hand. Well, if SHE didn't want it....

"Aw, you don't like it?" Lilah asked. Whelp. There was no helping, then. She had tried. "What's your favorite undried fruit?" she asked.

"I l'ke oranges," Tarot replied, conscious of the weight of the rat on her shoulder. It was a very odd feeling. It probably didn't help with how small Tarot was, the rat took up her entire shoulder! Rather than continue to knaw on the half-eaten piece of pineapple, and figured Lilah wouldn't want something she had chewed on, Tarot offered up the piece of dried fruit to him.

Dexter squealed in delight (although he was slightly disappointed that he hadn't been able to steal it) and quickly snatched the piece of fruit and scurried off with it, to split with the other 2 rats.

Lilah nodded. "Oranges are tasty," she agreed. She preferred her apples, although... "Oranges make a BIG mess when you eat them! With all the peeling and stuff!"

This was said as a pro of oranges, not a con. Lilah loved messes!

Tarot just shrugged. That was part of the food sometimes. She actually loved expirmenting with all the different ways one could get into an orange, to find what method was messiest, cleanest, simpliest, and what left the orange in so many fragmented pieces that one couldn't eat it.

"Makes m' hands smell nice after, tho'." That was actually her favorite part, her hands smelling like her favorite treat for half the day.

She watched the rat make off with the fruit she'd offered him. "Where's he goin'," she asked, curious. She'd thought he'd eat the pineapple right were he was. Maybe he just liked hiding in various places?
