I just listen to my normal music, but I've actually noticed that it does in fact influence my writing. When I listen to Brand New I tend to write sadder things and when I listen to the Hush Sound I write really happy things (same goes for Michelle Branch, Boys Like Girls, and Cute is What We Aim For). When I listen to grunge my writing tends to be angrier.

General Phade Nightmare1 If Danny Elfman wrote it, it has probably been background music at some point. If it is a Disney movie soundtrack, same thing. If I feel like listening to a band, I usually have it down to background noise levels so I can better concentrate on my writing. Elfman's got a way of really bringing out the emotion in his scores. The score to Edward Scissorhands is a personal favorite. Edward Scissorhands and Corpse Bride tend to be favorite choices of music when I write.

Unfortunately, I cannot listen to music while I am writing, even if it is entirely instrumental -- too distracting! sweatdrop However! I will listen to music and connect it with my stories and characters and it will get me inspired/in the mood to work on the story in question. Recently, I put a playlist together on my iPod that was supposed to be just a fun, happy playlist but I later discovered that almost every song in it connected, some way, to Wind Bird, whether it is content, message, or mood, so now that playlist is its "unofficial" soundtrack, haha. I have listened to it when I have done artwork based on the story.
Here is the playlist in question:
"To The Sky" - Owl City "Into Yesterday" - Sugar Ray "Starlight" - Muse "Tsunaida Te" - Li'l B "Smile Like You Mean It" - The Killers "You Get What You Give" - New Radicals "Float On" - Modest Mouse "Stand Tall" - Dirty Heads "Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World" - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
It's a very feel-good playlist. smile

Moyayuki, I can't write and listen to music at the same time. In fact, I can hardly do anything and listen to music at the same time. I just like to really focus on the song and the inspiration it brings. I've found I enjoy long car rides if I bring my ipod, cause its an extended amount of time that I can just listen... and not feel guilty for doing absolutely nothing. However, I'm not to that stage yet where I can operate my ipod and drive at the same time, so I often just have to settle for the radio (which isn't half as good).
