Awhile ago, HarperCollins sent out an e-mail to subscribers that had an FAQ about the books. If you're not a subscriber (although it is likely that you are) then I'll explain it a bit. It was a list of the answers to frequently asked questions about Book the Twelfth, only they didn't include the questions. For the most part, it was just funny, but here's the kicker: One of the 'answers' was: Yes, that is Beatrice. Oh my God!!! Beatrice is in Book the Twelfth. Which one do you think she was?

P.S. I apologize if there's been a thread about this already, but I couldn't find it, so I started a new one.

Ooooh... interesting thought! However, it is not exactly conclusive. The question could have been any of the following...

And the woman you once loved?
Is that her in the picture on your wall?
Is the dedication always to the same person?
etc.

I'm fairly certain Beatrice is dead.

Spoilers: Isn't she buried in Lemony Snicket's back yard? I thought he mentioned that somewhere.

Firstly, um, of course Beatrice is dead. Look at the dedications: To Beatrice: Darling, dearest, dead. My love for you shall live forever, you however, did not. Et cetera.

Second, yes, I suppose it could have been the response to a number of those non-specific questions, but I'm fairly certain (I don't have it with me to verify for sure) that the 'Answers to Frequently Asked Questions' was specific to book the twelfth.

What I meant was, I assumed she had been dead since before the first book was written.

Not that she died after the events in the series but before the books were published.

Oh, sorry. Yeah, I guess it's possible. But see, I always assumed that her death had something to do with the Baudelaire case, which is why Lemony feels that he has to write the books. Also, if you consider, the events in the book happened a long time ago. Like, when Lemony visits Prufrock Prep, it's covered in ivy and all that. So, I think it's reasonable that Beatrice could have died during the course of the books since they do take place some time ago. And if this is so, then she is definately in TPP. I was thinking maybe the person in the trunk of the taxi? Although I suppose she could be any number of the hotel guests.

It could be that Beatrice is The Bauldilires mother. That would explain why he would want to tell their story, and why he is so sad about her marrage.

Elch... Not the Beatrice-is-the-Baudelaire's-mother theory again. Although I suppose no theory can be proved wrong, I'm fairly certain she is not their mother. There is a huge section on this in the Unofficial Lemony Snicket FAQ on the net. My personal reasons for discrediting this theory are:

1) When Esme says, 'I'm going to steal from you the way Beatrice stole from me' there is zero reaction from the kids, like no 'what? Mom?'

2) I always assumed that the love between Lemony and Beatrice was mutual. It would not have been if she was the Baudelaire's mother seeing as she had been married to another man for, plausibly, 14 years at least.

I wasn't going to respond on the grounds that if a person can't bother to spell 'Baudelaires' correctly, their theory doesn't bear examination.

I just think she isn't their mother because...yeah, like you said, she's been mentioned before and the children would have reacted if she was their mother.

Do you have a link to this FAQ? Maybe a screenshot of the e-mail. I don't mean to call you a liar, I just wanna see it for myself since author tracker doesn't like sending me updates. I guess it's just the researcher in me, nothing personal wink

Like someone mentioned earlier, I had always believed that Beatrice died prior to the first book. (Unless she was in fact the Baudelaire mother, then she would have died in the first book. But that's a completely different matter and that's been discussed quite a bit.) But I think Beatrice defenitely had more of a connection with Book the Twelfth than we realize..

Interesting but I too would like to see this email. I think I might have seen this before though...
