I like Yoga. Its hard to find a instructor you like. I'm not very motivated. I liked the classes at the gym they seem kind of fun. I can't really get myself to do it at home. It's all a matter of opinion.

Yoga is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. It not only helps you to stretch and get the physical exercise that we all need, but it also helps to center us. The "new age bull s**t" that everyone seems to be referring to is probably some type of meditation, either on your own or guided. If this is true, I hate to tell you all, but these concepts are not new age at all. In fact, they have been practiced for centuries in Eastern cults. It is also true that Yoga originated as a way to keep in touch with the gods of Hinduism and that there are many forms of it. In most modern classes they tend to take a little bit from all of the different types of yoga and put them together to give you the all around health benefits of it. It is agreed among both traditional and nontraditional doctors that in order for a person to be in good overall health, that they must have both the mind (spirit) and the body working together in harmony. If something is out of balance with one, then the other will not be able to function properly. If you take a class at your local YMCA then you will not be subject to the Hindu idles in the room; you will simply be given the chance to meditate and get in touch with whatever god, or gods, you believe in and to channel your energy to help you live a better life as a whole. I love yoga and totally recommend it to anyone who is willing to try something new.

Basilia Ann E Julri From what I understand, yoga in its original form was a means of understanding and uniting with God or some sort of higher being. There are four kinds of yoga: nana yoga -uniting with God through through knowledge and reflection-, bhakti yoga -uniting with God through connection with friends and family-, karma yoga -uniting with God through hard work and helping others-, and raja yoga- uniting with God through psychophysical exercises. When we say "yoga" today, most people are referring to raja yoga because, while it is partially a spiritual thing, it's also good exercise which, as Lumanny pointed out, can be very beneficial for medical reasons.
Yoga, Raja yoga, is more than just the standard "psychophysical" exercises. Yoga derives from the Hindu Vedas, and its polytheist core. Yoga is a mechanism to commune with both gods and demons.
So when you are "exercising" do you know who (or what) you are communing with? All yoga rooms have a Hindu idol present. The yoga is aimed at the god.
I'm not an expert of Hindu mythology and vedic tradition, but all Gods and demons are manifestations of Brahman. The ultimate goal is to help break the spell of maya and realize unity with Brahman.

All I have heard (besides the normal stuff) is that it's good for people with body aches and pains. I've heard it's better for you than going to a chiropractor. ninja

From what I understand, it's taken several ways- It CAN be religious, but the secular stretching and exercise can be taken as is.
It seems much like many martial arts done by monks- Tai Chi I believe is one of the more prominent ones. It is the same way. Depending on who is teaching it, how, and to what ends, it is either a religious spiritual experience, a way of life, or a simple secular fighting style. The focus of the use of the body can be used as a focus to the Divine, a focus to interactions with the rest of the world, a focus to improving the physical body, or all of the above.
