It had too much pop-culture and not enough mythology.

That's very true.

And the opposite's exactly why I liked The Company of Wolves. Granted, it was a modern re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood, but all of the sub-stories told within and the werewolf transformations were based off of folklore.

How Twilight Works

I'll probably be saying what others have already said, but here goes.

It is waaaaay too sexual. I mean seriously. We already have Secret Life of the American teenage, or whatever it's called. and we have those shows 16 and pregnant. we do not need this series encouraging girls to go find their "vampire" and get pregnant at 16. There are already too many things encouraging sex at young ages. And Bella is way too dependant. It's like she can't take care of herself. edward is gone and she becomes a baby her dad has to bottle feed... She is no role model. But then again, we don't have any role models who are good...

The blashpheme against vampires? Against vampires!? What about the blaspheme against women!?

What I don't like about the books is that I think they're sexist.

Why? Because every female wants the same thing-- a family, children, a big strong man to love them, and are willing to do unthinkable things for it. ((Well, Meyer never talked about what Jessica and Angela want, but every female she did show wanted the same thing))

Rosalie-- Rosalie wanted someone to love her and babies and a family. Of course, this is also due to the role of women in the time period that she was raised in, but even as she experiences a longer, different version of life that spans seventy years, she still wants children so badly that she will result to MURDER to get a child. Edward and Jacob prove that in BD as Jacob thinks snide thoughts about Rosalie, and Edward reads Rose's thoughts and tells Jacob that he was correct.

She saved Emmett because he remotely resembled the baby of a friend that she used to envy, because that friend had a home, a baby, and a big strong man to provide for her. Emmett goes on to be one of THE strongest vampires. He also is shown later in BD to only talk about Rosalie when he's talking about sex. He never once calls her his angel or anything (like he does in Meyer's outtakes that tell his story about how he was changed)-- I don't think. He might have said something, but if he did, it wasn't anything big enough for me to actually REMEMBER, which proves my point.

Also, she doesn't even really save Emmett, because she does not trust herself to have the self-control to change him. Instead, she takes him to Carlisle, a big strong man with massive amounts of self control, because in Meyer's universe, the only people with self-control are the men.

Jasper has self control because he, although unstable and used to a diet of human blood, is around humans all the time, and even though it's really hard for him, he abstains. Even though there is at least one girl on her period all the time at Forks High (if you think about it), and thus bleeding. Jasper smells the blood, and does nothing, because he has self-control.

And we all know Edward's self-control. He's trained himself to ignore the most potent smell of blood to him ever and be around Bella and love her, and even have sex with her.

Carlisle is the Vampire doctor-- the one who's around blood ALL DAY LONG and has developed huge amounts of self control to deal with this.

None of the girls are portrayed as having self control. In fact, Alice is constantly being shown as having NO control over herself, going overboard, and over the top ALL THE TIME. But I'll get to her later.

Anyways, back to Rosalie. She's shown as only thinking about herself. This is showcased in Midnight Sun where Edward describes her thoughts as being a shallow pool because she is only concerned with how pretty she is. Yeah, I realize that there ARE women like that, but if you couple that with all the other women in the book who are only concerned with clothes and fashion, that really is demeaning.

Alice-- Alice says that in one of the books that the minute she opened her eyes after becoming a vampire, she saw Jasper's face in her mind, and knows she's destined for Jasper, who's a warrior. AKA a big strong man. So she doesn't worry, and instead goes to wait for him, and subsequently, she's waiting for her chance to join a peaceful family led by a big strong man.

Alice shows that all women are supposed to do is sit around like Rapunzel in a tower and wait for a guy to come by and save us. Alice had the potential to be a really cool character, but Meyer turned her into someone who would sit around, waiting for a guy, and when he shows up, she's supposed to reform him and turn him into a good person. After she does that, she, like Rosalie, is concerned about clothes and fashion ALL THE TIME. Her mind is filled with having sleepovers, and throwing parties, and fluff. The only time it's shown that she has something REAL on her mind is at the VERY END of BD, when she goes to help her family.

Esme-- She tries to kill herself because her baby is stillborn. Either that, or it dies shortly after it was born. I think it says somewhere that her husband used to beat her. Or, otherwise, it was in a fan fiction that I read. But let's just go with that, and say that he did beat her. She threw herself off a CLIFF (aka TRIED TO KILL HERSELF) because she did not get the ideal family, husband, and child.

And then Carlisle comes out of no where and saves her and turns her into a vampire, and she lives happily ever after with a bunch of "Kids" who aren't even kids because they're all like 70 years old, which fulfills her desire to be a mother. And it shows that all she wants to do is be a mother figure.

I can understand wanting to be a mom, because I want to be a mom, and I'm sure she's good at it, because she's helped stop these people from murdering innocent humans, along with Carlisle. However, I find it ridiculous that she will KILL herself if she doesn't get to be a mom.

Esme teaches us that "If you don't get your goal, go kill yourself, girls." You don't see any of the men throwing themselves off cliffs if they don't meet THEIR goals.

... could kick your a** !!
I don't agree with you on some of your examples. From what I remember, Jasper had the least amount of self control. He had to control himself at school, but so did the rest of his family. And I think he was the only one who lunged at Bella over a paper cut, or whatever that was at the party.
And Esme, I know a few women who've lost babies. It's really depressing. She probably shouldn't have thrown herself off a cliff, but I don't blame her actions on her being a helpless women who can only be fulfilled by having kids.

What I am surprised at is that you didn't mention the most horrifying instance of sexism that I noticed: Edward and Bella.
Edward is emotionally abusive and controlling and little girls worship him for it! Edward is inconceivably fast and strong, and from the point he meets Bella it is his job to protect her from all of the big scary things in the world.
Bella is weak, insecure, irrational, and frankly dumb. Bella could not protect herself from a pair of safety scissors. Bella has me asking what the hell happened to Buffy, mighty slayer of vampires and emasculator of males.
It is made completely normal for Bella to spend her every moment obsessing over Edward. She is completely dependent on him. Whenever he gets all scary vampire on her, she blames herself for not being more careful and not listening to him. Because after all, Edward knows best.

In another interview, Meyer said that the main character in The Host is the "strongest female character you will ever see". That's a load of bull if I ever heard one. The main character in The Host goes out and tries to find her boyfriend. Forget trying to save the human race, her planet, or even just the people in her area, no. She goes to find and be with her man.

God how I HATE Meyer!

I watched Twilight, and I will tell you what it was....

IT WAS EYE-CANDY BULLSHIT.

Like, you could EASILY tell it was made to catch the eyes of the stupid and young generation of today.
The main character, an unemotional teen in highschool, moves to a literally dark, black and white town and has somehow become swayed by the looks of the only kid in school who looks like he wears lipstick. Somehow, they both have concealed feelings for one another. Questions don't really stay arised, especially when he somehow stops a moving car from hitting the main girl with on hand. ( Adrenaline my a**... )

Then, I see the vampire family call themselves vegetarians and THAN slap a damn dead deer upon the table.
The story on how they become vampires is vague, the story on how they became a family is MORE vague, and the story on how Edward always stays in highschool is...creepy...
Don't get me started on how the vampires sparkle...

What more, they play baseball in the rain because they plays sound like lightning, but you can easily tell it's so their mascara and the water on their eyelashes can show out more.

The WORST thing about the series is when the second part comes in and PROVES all the love is fake.

Edward mentally abuses Bella and Jacob physically threatens/abuses her. Jacob wants to ride a motorcycle and not wear a shirt while Edward wants to be the guy who tries to push Bella away.

MEANWHILE, our main character, Bella, mentally breaks down and can't do anything without Edward so she waits near a random window for 8 months or so.

Bottom line, the story wouldn't be complete if Bella wasn't hopeless and mentally weak, Edward was such a whinny little b***h who only loves Bella for her blood, and Jacob who HAS to be homosexual and try to act sexy while hitting on Bella because she is easy to get pretty much.

I wouldn't be surprised if Underworld sued their asses for the whole Werewolf vs Vampire idea.
This PROVES that the public and society thinks anyone will date anyone as long as they fit some kind of social group and look good.

Maybe in Meyer's view, strong women = having a man with them. rolleyes

I know lots of women who are married or in some sort of relationship and still are very strong and don't depend on their husbands or significant others to define who they are. I also know lots of single women who are strong and independent as well.

Having a man does not make a woman stronger! She has to be strong on her own first.

I don't read the interviews, but from that she's a real idiot. From what I know the characters in Host aren't quite as dependent on the male characters, but there's far stronger female characters out there (like the girls in Tamora Pierce's books [I'm reading Bloodhound]). rolleyes

Anita Blake in Laurell K Hamilton's novels is technically a 'strong' female character.

However she gets new powers, supernatural creatures to look after, and new lovers in every damn book.

Let's see, I haven't read the actual novels for the Sookie Stackhouse series and I don't plan on it. Sookie is whiny and self-centered, I don't think I can take the novels being from her sole point of view.

The Mercy Thompson ones are the only ones I've read I like. Most of the time Mercy is a stronger character, the one time she breaks down all of her defenses is after she gets raped, which is understandable.
