Brendan "Lexy" Derish

So, often do I meet
People in between
That just can't get a hold of it

Catching a glimpse of himself in the store window, Brendan stared at himself absent mindedly for a moment. It was Sunday morning—maybe the afternoon by now. He wasn’t exactly sure anymore, seeing as he’d been out all day. Being at home wasn’t exactly his most favorite thing to do, so he would spend a lot of his time outside of the house. In parks, the mall or something stupid like that. Even being in the back yard was better than being actually in his house. But that didn’t matter right now. He smiled at his reflection in the dirty window, and it smiled back at him. An exact replica of his facial features and his body, every movement he made was played back to him. But he noted, with little regret, that it could never replicate his personality. Just like the people in this world, there would be no one else like him. He liked to think that everyone was different. Even if they kind of had similar appearances, everyone was different from one another. Children would grow up to be like their parents, friends would copy friends, but really, no matter how much someone mimicked, just like the dirty window they would never be the same. The smile stayed on his face as he paid for his pack of gum and coke. Yes, that was the only reason he walked to the store. Some chewing gum and a small bottle of coke. It was his fuel, what could he say? The sugary drink always perked him up and gods forbid he not have something in his mouth.

Oral fixation much?

He thanked the man behind the small counter and left the store, opening the coke and taking a swig of it before shoving it into his shoulder bag. Sighing into the air he smiled again, staring up at the clouds as he started his walk back to his part of town. It wasn’t that far, maybe a ten minute walk to Fleet Street—the name hadn’t really irked him until they came out with the movie Sweeny Todd. But of course, he would love the movie and brag that he lived on the street where the murders took place. Only…in a completely different country and…not anywhere near England. But that didn’t matter to him, it was the name, and he lived there. Nodding at his sound logic, he let his feet carry him in the direction they were headed as he stared at the sky, making animals out of the small clouds that passed by. There was rabbits and mice, cats and dogs, a dragon and a sheep and of course a giraffe. Popping a stick of the gum he had just bought into his mouth, Brendan chewed thoughtfully. He hoped there was something else he could do to preoccupy his time around town. He really didn’t want to go home just yet. Even though his little brother was only twelve, he was still a d**k to him. It was pretty pathetic that his mom always compared their grades too. Though it wasn’t enough to get on his nerves. He usually just smiled and shrugged, stating that he might be a little slow but at least he wasn’t a jerk like him.

He was snapped out of his thoughts when he suddenly remembered something—or rather, when he saw something. It seemed to him that yet again, he was left out of the loop as a gathering of what seemed to him as teenagers was sat outside the house that had been sold recently. He had lived on the street his entire life, always being one of the first to visit whoever might be lurking around and moving into the neighborhood. It tended not to matter in the end however, because as soon as everyone else came to visit the newcomers, he tended to be forgotten or shrugged off as “that idiot loser” or something like that. Again, it didn’t matter what people would call him. If they maybe got to know him a little they might realize that there was more to him than they knew.

Brendan loved this street with a passion, always had, and wouldn’t let anyone dislike it if he had anything to say about it. But, it seemed like he was a little beat to the punch on this one as he noted with genuine hurt that Heather and Dylan had gotten to them before him. A pout set on his lips and he bounded towards the group as fast as he could. Unfortunately for him, he was a bit of a slow runner, that and his bag was weighing him down a little. After stumbling and tripping his way down the street, shoe laces untied, hair a mess, and his bag falling down his arm, Brendan finally called out to the group. “Heeeey!” he called, extending the middle ‘e’ vowel to make the word simply sound a bit longer and meaningful. He wanted to be noticed by all of them, so obviously he would make some kind of big entrance or something. He stopped beside Heather of all people and his nose twitched at whatever fruity perfume she might have been wearing that day.

She had never been his favorite kid on the street. A bit of a stuck up jerk if you asked him, but no one did, so it wasn’t like he was going to blurt out his opinion of her. The blonde girl just didn’t suit his fancy very much. “Heather.” He said in a tone that suggested that he didn’t particularly care what she had to say to him, chances were he was going to ignore her and probably suffer the ridicule later. She was popular, rich, and he didn’t like it. He knew better than to judge people based on their families position in the social hierarchy, and god knows that if he maybe took the time to hold a decent conversation with her some time, he might grow to like her. But for the time being, he couldn’t care less. A smile grew on his face however; as he noticed Dylan who was talking to some kid he didn’t even know. Well…talking as in pretty much passing notes. Who knew that anyone would do something like that out of class? Oh well, it wasn’t really his business what they do. He waved sheepishly at Dylan and moved back ever so slightly to take in the whole group. Four kids he didn’t know. Two he did.

The two boys he didn’t know where fairly attractive. One tall, most likely older than the other boy and fairly attractive for a man who had come form wherever the hell these folks had come in from. The other, was a younger more fragile looking boy. Talking to Dylan animatedly through notes and flailing his hands around. But he could tell there was no striking physical resemblance between the two. Brother or friends or something more the boy didn’t know. The two girls however also seemed a little out of place next to each other, however like the other two, their boy companions they too were attractive. Sticking his hand straight out as it to shake hands with whoever was in front of him, instead it wormed it’s way between everyone and towards the dog in the center, yes, he completely ignored the people he had come all this way to meet and went straight for the dog. He loved dogs, they were just so…cute! And this one was definitely a charmer. Pit Bulls happened to be one of his favourite dogs. After giving the canine a swift ruffle of the fur, he stood to his full height and coughed a bit, letting a dopy smile filter onto his face. His cheeks lit up as his smile lit up; “My names Brendan, my friends call me Lexy. It’s a pleasure to meet you guys,” Jutting his thumb over his shoulder at the house across the street and over one, he stated with a happy atmosphere. “That’s my house. Lived there my whole life. You guys ever need anyone to show you around, chances are I’m your man.

Nodding with a sense of finality on the subject, he glanced from person to person. Each having their own conversations with one another. For a second he wasn’t even sure if anyone had taken note of him. He shuffled his feet, toeing the yar on the road with his black skater shoes absent mindedly wondering what kind of bird could chirp the loudest.

Rushing inside, Dinah immediately grabbed Ava by the hand and carted her upstairs as fast as possible. She was right about the view! Dinah was leaning out of the window, but Ava could see over her. She was five feet and ten inches tall, after all. "How many years has that house been empty?" she asked, only having lived in the neighborhood for two years, in which the house had always been empty. Then Dinah mention the yummy, older boy. For some reason Ava felt a ping of jealousy, but ignored it. It confused her, because Ava wasn't the type to get attached emotionally to men, whether it be a relationship or relationship material. She was loyal and faithful, but didn't like to be tied down. There had been a guy in high school who had tried to do just that, and she damn near suffocated from how he constantly wanted to her to come over to his house all the time. So naturally she wasn't the jealous type. Hence why she was so confused.

Looking down at the back of Dinah's head with a confused frown twisting her face, she almost didn't notice the sudden movement outside across the street. What she noticed was that girl, Heather, strutting right up to the house with not a single house-warming treat in hand. What, too prissy to bake? Ava scoffed. Real women knew how to bake and be good hosts. Near to fuming, Ava watch as Heather played little Miss Perfect for the neighbors. "Well that's just perfect, huh? The first guy I've seen in this neighborhood that actually looks to be about my age and Heather's already staking her claim," she mumbled with a dejected sigh, slumping against the window frame. It was true that Ava had no self-confidence, so she couldn't just waltz up to a hot guy like that, at least not without an incentive. She was a social butterfly usually, but first impressions were the ones that stuck with you. "If I weren't so paranoid about it coming back on me three fold, I'd hex that hussy right now," she added, knowing Dinah would get at least a giggle out of that. The one reason Dinah was her best friend was because she was so relaxed about Ava's religion. Well, that and the fact they totally made out once and liked it. A lot.

With another sigh, Ava just continued to watch the unfolding scene across the street. That one kid, Dylan if she remembered right, had made it outside a little after Heather. It was odd considering she had never seen the kid outside much. Then Lexy came running up from down the street. She had baked for him a few times. He was easy to get along with and lovable as hell. He was different and when you get bored with things as quickly as Ava it was fun to know someone who was so sporadic. Ava slapped Dinah on the butt playfully to get her attention. "Do you still have any of those cookies I baked left, or did your dad eat them all?" she asked, thinking it was about time for the two of them to go and introduce themselves as proper neighbors would.

She was slightly shocked by Heather's sudden invitation. Gwen smiled and allowed her to take her phone call, and seeing that Issac had already allowed Nicholas to receive his notebook to talk to the freshly dressed boy, Dylan her job was done. She noticed Nikki saying nothing, and this bothered her. Gwen wondered if Heather actually liked Nicole. She wanted Nicole to make some friends here. It's wasn't an assumption as to how Heather felt, some how she figured people sometimes were a little uneasy about her little sister. Although, she appreciated that Heather had also invited Nikki. Even so, Gwen wanted Nicole to be seriously liked for herself, her quiet, horse-loving self, the sister that Gwen had grown to love.

Snapped out of her thoughts when Heather spoke up again, Gwen wasn't sure if she should accept the invitation straight away. Which could only lead to one answer. "Yeah, sounds cool. Maybe later!" She smiled her best Gwen smile, as she now pondered what that phone conversation was about. It's not as if she did quietly, for she over heard the talk of party so she assumed. Speaking of party, she wondered how she was going to have her birthday party in a new place of still strangers to her. How unfortunate to have your birthday a week away, and you had no plans. Gwen sighed, slightly upset. She had no friends to invite down here. In fact, Gwen wasn't Miss Popular at her school, oh no. Well, not popular as in head cheerleader popular considering she was an orch dork. She was popular some what by the under dogs, but still managed to be cool with the popular students. She hung out with those deemed punks, skaters, and musicians and such. Her style could fool you with her usual friends however, since she continued to love fashion despite her influences. And her fashion could consist of anything. She never had a specific inspiration. Today, was obviously 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' day.

Before she could say more, another charming character had managed to trip all the way over to the populating group of teens. He was cute and had an adorable charisma about himself. His style reminded Gwen of her friends back home a bit. Maybe a skater by the looks of his shoes. Gwen assumed he was the funny type by just his entrance. However, the raven haired girl noted his formal hello to Heather. Were they not friends? Gwen was one who got along with mostly everyone as best she could, but did like to change for others, like Nikki. However, Gwen wasn't stubborn about change, since sometimes it could be a good thing. Gwen eyed Brendan again. She couldn't help giggling slightly, "Glad we ran into you then...or I guess you ran into us," She gave him an amused look, "I guess you missed the whole name thing. Gwen, Nicole, Issac, and Nicholas." Once again, she pointed to everyone, assuming her role as the host. Issac looked completely bored and irritated—his fault for so much drinking—because everyone was younger then him. Guess he was going to have to deal with it. However, there had to be someone on this street for him. So far these people were great.

Then an idea popped into Gwen's head. How about a little party to break in the new house? To invite all these people so they could all hang out more? Well, it was a little far-fetched because truthfully, she assumed some of them weren't all party people. And she had yet to see all of the new faces. Gwen loved barbecues or friendship and family gatherings. Although, she never used to actually throw the parties. That was always somebody else' job and she was better at decorating and assisting. Although, after this new idea had sprung into her head, she wasn't sure who to tell just yet. This would probably stick with her all day until the goal was complete.

Dylan Smithers

cαη yσυ sεε мε ησω ?

Dylan watched as his new neighbor signed again, possibly quicker than before. He was able to pick out 'wait' and 'promise' without to many problems, but to piece the words together he'd have to keep himself calm. 'Wait... I promise to return?' That sounded about right, seeing their situation was in need of a note book for speaking. In the blond's mind, he was able to recall a few signs and sentences. Things like his name, some questions in general, and lyrics to certain songs. That book was sure handy to him, he might even sign it out again. But, on his own time. Not during the most boring English class ever, though he could make an exception.

While trying to keep his cool, calm and collected self in order, he showed up. By he, it meant the skater kid from across the street. His very presence was intimidating for the small blond. It was overbearing for such a introvert, which was yet another reason he didn't visit his neighbors more often. True, the boy's nature was light-hearted and friendly, it just didn't sit with Dylan. He didn't hate him or anything, he just felt a ton of bricks on the awkward scale when near him. It sounded a lot crueler then it really is meant to be. Some people are just shy. Or incredibly easy to make uncomfortable.

When Nick popped right back out of the house again, Dylan was relieved. Another moment near Lexy and he'd be blown away and into the sewers. The pen and note pad were raised to his view, letting him know that they'd be able to have a smoother conversation then through his siblings. Truth be told, the rest of them probably forgot his existence while Nick was gone. He didn't have a sign on his head with bright lights that could keep their attention like the other neighborhood boy from across the road.

Once Dylan was face-to-face with Nick, he gestured for them to sit down on the edge of the porch. Kind of strange to do when it wasn't his house. But, nerves take the most sense out of people. As they sat, Dylan watched Nick scribble out some words in a excited cursive text. He found himself amused at how the boy wrote in big sloppy letters with cute little dots on his 'i's. He took the pen to reply, only to have it ripped away from him. With a confused look, Nick wrote some more to him. That made more sense, once he held it for him again. Panic, was he supposed say his answers or write them? In the end, he decided to write his answer right underneath the red head's words.

I don't mind in the least.
To cure that curiosity, I'm sixteen and I'd say its been close to seven years since I've lived around here.
As for books, I'm rereading Les Misérables for the third time. So, I'm kind of a dork...

I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

Nikki scowled as a blond girl walked up onto the porch. Didn't she think she was perfect! Nikki stayed crouched down beside Storm, with out moviong as the girl introduled herself as Heather Snow. Nikki couldn't help but smirk as Storm barked, he didn't like her either. the sixteen year old looked at Heather carefully. Her cloths had to be the fanciest cloths Nikki ahd ever seen and she thought they were hidious. She glanced up as Gwen as she introduced them, of course she didn't mind the girl. At her olde rsisters comment about other famlies being scared of her Niki almost laughed. What was so bad about that? They would be left alone then!Nikki glanced up as another boy joined the oh-so-fancy Heather. The boy seemed close to ehr age but Nikki had never really had an interest in dating, she just saw this boy as another boy. She nodded politly to him with out a word or a smiled. The teenager stroked Stormy gently and glanced at Isaac and Nicky. Nicky seemed ot have taken a liking to the new boy, Dylan, not that it bothered Nikki too much. Isaac, on the other hand, didn't seem to wnat to be here at the moment. Nikki tilted her head as a smiled spread across her older brother's face, she knew that smile and it wans't a good one. What was her older brother thinking about?

Her head whipped around as heather inited ehr and gwen over. Oh yeah like she woudl go! A whole day stuck with two girls that all they cared about was how good they looked? No. Thank. You. She glared angrily at Heather before glancing up as another boy walked up toward them. She couldn't help but smile and he spoke to Heather like he couldn't care who she was. This was someone she might get along with!As th boy approuched Storm and ruffled his pelt Nikki could only smile at the way Storm preshed close to the boy's hand and barked with pleasure. She smiled kindly at him and spoke, "Nice to meet you Lexy, I'm Nicole but I prefer Nikki and this is my loving one year old pit bull named Storm." She paused and glanced up at Gwen as her older sister had once again introduced them all. Why was her sister always acting like the boss? Nikki could speak for herself, if she so choosed to. Nikki then glanced back at Brendan. She smiled kindly at him, hoping that she might have found someone to hang out wiht. "I think I'll take you up on that offer, lexy. I'd really like somene to show me around this town. I was planning on takign Tsorm for a walk, maybe you could join us," she said calmly. Nikki glanced at Heather and rolled her eyes at the "Princess". She wouldn't waste one minute on that girl.

Although her sister seeme dot ahve other plans for them. Nikki's jaw dropped open as her sister pretty much accepted Heather's initation, for the both of them! How could Gwen do that! She must have known Nikki would rather die then go and hang out with that princess! She couldn't help but narrow her eyes and glare at both her sister and Heather. The tomboy felt her anger rising and she wasn't one to hold in what she was thinking. Nikki turned toward Heather and she felt Storm tense underneath her. "I'm soryr hetaher but I'd rather die then go and hang with you! I'm not one to hang out wiht the stuck up princess type," Nikki hissed. She didn't care if Heather was hurt by her words or hated her forever."Don't worry though, you can hang with my sister all you want. We are nothing alike, I promise." Storm's body tensed beneath her hand and the pit bull took a step toward Hetaher and growled, his sharp teeth showing. Nikki dropped the leahs from her other hand and crosse dher arm. She knew Storm well enough to know he wasn't going to attack Heather, he was just trying to look big and tough. Storm continued to growl at Heather for a few more seconds before turnign back to Nikki and rubbing against her leg. He stared up at ehr wiht big eyes and wagged his tail. Nikki stroked his pelt and turned toward Lexy. She smiled at him, hoping he wouldn't mind what she had said to Heather.

Gwen felt her body go ridged as she listened to Nikki's words. Her face contorted into such a furious grimace that Stormy whimpered, but it was only for a split second. The motherly scowl, Papa sometimes referred to it as such. Gwen sighed, getting really pissed at the younger sister's attitude towards everyone and everything it seemed. She was probably even mad at Gwen for saying 'Maybe'. At least she was being polite! And it's not like she officially accepted. Gwen could practically read that girl's mind, getting upset over petty things like Gwen introducing them all. But that's just who Gwen was, and Nicole wasn't doing a hot job of saying hello herself. If she wanted to be rude she could just take it somewhere else. But instead Nikki went straight up and insulted a complete stranger. Gwen didn't hate any of their neighbors so far, but that was always Gwen. She didn't truly mind anyone unless they were extremely annoying. "Damn it, Nikki..." She cursed under her breath at her sister, which she knew probably didn't care. Sometimes she just couldn't tell if her sister hated her or not. Gwen has always tried to get along with her, but she always pushed her away in some form or fashion. Sometimes it made Gwen want to cry, and Gwen didn't cry often. She wondered if Nikki knew her words hurt Gwen herself just as much as she intended to hurt Heather. It seemed as if she was talking to the both of them.

She decided not to apologize for Nikki's blunder this time, eventually it would come back to bite her. Gwen didn't know what to say after that. She just shook her head wishing that her parents were out here so they could scold her. Through plenty of experience, Gwen knew not to judge a book by it's cover. However, it seemed to be that everyone kind of had a silent hate for Heather as far as she observed. They did their best to avoid her. It was interesting. Gwen wondered if anyone really bothered to get to know her at all. She looked like a rich girl, so I guess that was pretty intimidating, but was she mean? Judgmental? Gwen would eventually find out. The musician smiled as she saw her younger brother getting excited over the new boy. Her eyes followed as they migrated to the porch to pass notes back and forth. The only word that came to mind was adorable.

However, fury was still burning at her head. Gwen just hated people being mean. She could be cruel herself, but usually a few seconds after doing so she would scold herself in such a way where guilt would eat at her until she apologized. If the person somehow deserved the targeted bitterness...well that personal moral could be flexible. But right now, it was not. Not at all. She itched to get her guitar, something to calm her. Music was a personal remedy of course "I'll be right back..." Gwen mumbled trying to fog up the anger sizzling on her tongue. The words weren't really directed at anyone, and she hoped Heather would be okay alone for a moment. Maybe she could converse with Issac. She jolted indoors and into the living room where her guitar awaited her. Just seeing the thing put her at ease. She felt her hand naturally pull it from it's neck and into her arms. After swooping the strap around her shoulders she relaxed, the anger finally dissolving. She didn't even need to play to feel better. Just to hold it was enough. Gwen wasn't sure if she even wanted to go back outside, but she did, guitar in hand strumming soft chords absent minded.

"Thought the atmosphere could use a little music..." She said quietly, almost talking to herself, but she somewhat focused on everyone and at the same time no one.

Nodding enthusiastically at the gesture to sit on the edge
of the porch he lowered down next to Dylan and crossed
his legs in front of him. As he waited Nick's eyes caught the
redhead that must have came over when he had went inside.
Nikki seemed to be conversing with the other male, which made
Nick smile to himself he was happy that she had found someone
to speak with. She was not like Gwen when it came to a lot of
things and though Nick couldn't talk he was more social then his
younger sister. When the note book was given back to him he
gestured a thank you and read what Dylan had written to him.

If you don't want to write you don't
have to. I can hear fine.
          Sixteen? So am I!
          Do you like it here?
I love Les Misérables. I have read that over six times. Watched
the movie five times and seen the play ten times.
It is one of my favorites. So if you are a dork, then I guess I am one too.
I am currently re-reading Huckleberry Finn.

As Nick passed the notebook back to Dylan he heard the way
Nikki had spoke to heather and frowned in her direction, that
was no way to talk to the new neighbors. It would have been
better to decline the invitation to Heather's house in a different
manner then that. Gwen looked upset by what Nikki had said and
as she passed he reached out touching her hand and offered Gwen
a loving smile and watched her walk into the new house then looked
back to Dylan wondering if he had seen or heard what had
happened. If he had Nicky was unsure if he was going to apologize
for his sister's outburst or not. After all she was the one being
          rude, not Nick.

What really was surprising Nick was that none of them had
mentioned that they did not actually look as if they were related
or even asked if they could meet their parents. Which he really
did not mind, back in their old town they had been teased by
some because they had two dad's. Not that anyone of them really
cared what they had said. Some words they had used though had
hit some sensitive parts. On top of that Nicky had been also
teased because of the lack of a voice box and the jocks
would like to take his glasses from him and push him around
a little knowing full well that he could not call out for help.
He was glad to be in a new neighbor hood and already making
friends with a cute boy that didn't live far from him.

Isaac chuckled at Dylan's obvious excitement to talk to Nicky. It didn't seem like the boy had very many people to talk to that were even half interested in anything he was. This assumption came after another glance at Heather. She definitely didn't seem to be interested in anything but make up and clothes and that was alright with Isaac. At least it would get Gwen off Nikki's back for a while about her disheveled style. Turning to Nicky, he caught the last bit of his sign and managed to sign "You're welcome" before the boy ran off. Facing forward again, I saac still had yet to see anyone his age. Although the girls practically hanging out the window and stalking the family looked kind of interesting. Especially if they greeted new people like that.

Another boy approached and Isaac was relieved. He looked to be about his age, maybe a little older, maybe a tiny bit younger. Either way it was good to finally see someone that wasn't a teenager still. He was the only one to shake the boy's hand as Gwen introduced him for a second time. Nicky was lost in his own little world with Dylan and Heather and Gwen were probably getting along just fine. Nikki on the other hand was busy spitting venom at Heather while Storm backed her up. God, someone's PMSing, aren't they? Isaac rolled his eyes. That was one of the worst things about living with girls. They were totally fine then they flipped out for a week or so. You really just needed to move out of the house by that time.

Isaac looked back to Brendan and shrugged. Gwen was probably going to have a talk/fight/scream war with Nikki about her attitude but Isaac couldn't really blame her. "Why don't you show me around?" he said, taking a step closer to Brendan. "Anything fun to do around here?" Isaac wanted to put some space between the three girls. He didn't wanted to be caught in the middle of a fight where his sisters both expected him to take their side. It was World War 3 had broken out under their own roof. Blue eyes glanced back to Brendan as he waited for the boy to respond.

Dinah placed a finger to her lips as she thought for a moment. "Maybe like five years." She leaned a little further out the window and almost took a nice spill onto the lawn. For someone named after two cats from Alice in Wonderland, she wasn't graceful like one. In fact, she tripped over absolutely nothing all the time. Dinah sighed. Ava always took the backseat when it came to guys which usually left them to cozy up with Heather. "Go get 'im then! Carpe diem! Seize the sex!...y guy," she giggled as she almost forgot to add that last part. She knew that Ava would probably settle for just accidentally bumping into him before she actually introduced herself if she thought Heather had gotten to him first. Frowning, Dinah pulled herself back in the window and put her hands on her hips.

Her frown didn't last long as Ava mentioned hexing Heather. It wasn't a nice image that popped into her head and it was probably mean that she partly agreed, but she still laughed at the idea. Ava took her religion so seriously, and even though Dinah read her books (and tried a few things herself unbeknown to Ava), she couldn't really believe that ribbons and candles could have that kind of effect on anything. Still wouldn't tell Ava this though. Ever since they had made out that one time, they were kind of attached at the hip even though nothing ever came out it.

Dinah let out a squeak, a little louder than she meant, when Ava slapped her behind. Pouting playfully, she rubbed at the spot and turned toward Ava. She let out a string of grumbles but stopped with her mouth half opened when cookies where brought to attention. What had happened to those cookies? "Um, well actually..."She poked the tips of her pointer fingers together. "I think I ate them all... They were just so tasty! Stop making such tasty cookies!" She turned on her heel and jogged out of her room and back downstairs. "If he eats too many cookies, he'll get fat and bald!" she called back upstairs. "I'mma go say hi so c'mooon!" Dinah skipped out the door and spun in a circle on the lawn while she waited for Ava. One of these days, Dinah was gonna get Ava to be more assertive. With guys anyway. She was already plenty assertive when it came to Dinah.

And I froze inside myself and turned away

Heather nodded calmly at Brendan. She knew the boy didn't like her, and she wasn't about to say it didn't hurt her. She hadn't really ever spoken to Brendan so she guessed it was because she was rich and popular and he thought she was a snob. Hetaher really hoped she didn't come across that way, she tried to be nice toward poeple and include them. Just because your rich doesn't officially make you a snob but by the way some poeple treated her, that seemed to be what they thought. She smiled at Gwen and she told her maybe. She nodded to Gwen. Hetaher hadn't been expecting an answer right away but she didn't want Gwen to think she was a snob like some other kids thought she was. The seventeen year old really hoped that she could become good friends with Gwen, and not have Gwen like her just because she was rich because she would give that all away to have a normal life, normal friends, and her mother back...

Heather was snapped out of eh thoughts as Nikki spoke to her harshly. Heather took a few steps back and stared at the girl. She had just met her and Nikki was already making judgments on her! She was just like the others! The teenager felt tears well up in her blue eyes and she tried to blink them back, she couldn't cry! Heather stared at the ground, trying to prevent the tears from falling. She touched her left arm with her right hand and just stood there. Hetaher wasn't one to feel sorry for herself, but she couldn't say Nikki's words hadn't hurt, that would be a lie, and Heather wasn't a lier. She let her right hand fall to her side and brush up against her bag. She felt something round and hard in it and opened the flap. She pulled out a round silver container and held it out toward Isaac. "J-just something to welcome you to the neighborhood... Their truffles, my mother taught me the recipe when I was a little girl. I-I hope you like them," she stammered. As she spoke a single tear ran down her cheek and fell onto the box. Heather immediately rubbed her eyes with her spare hand and took a step back. She glanced away form Isaac and stared at the ground again. "I-I'm sorry..."

She closed her eyes and tightened up, waiting to be yelled at. An image of a teenager, a boy a little older then Heather, flashed in the girl's mind. He was yelling angrily at he and heather cringed at every word as tears ran down her cheeks. She shivered slightly at the thought of him. The image continued as the boy yelled angrily at her, calling her names and threatening her. It only stopped when Hetaher opened her blue eyes again an turned her gaze back to Isaac. She licked her lips, still holding the silver box out toward him.

Brendan "Lexy" Derish

So, often do I meet
People in between
That just can't get a hold of it

Introducing yourself seemed to get easier and easier as you grew up. When Brendan was a kid, he remembered stumbling all over himself trying to get out even one word which usually resulted in him screwing up and sobbing and running around and—well now things were just a hell of a lot easier. The boy learned that the quicker you introduced yourselves, and let others do the talking, the sooner you could get on with your life and get to the part where you make with the friends and get with the program. So, when she called herself, started telling him everyone’s names he was pretty pleased with himself. He smiled at her, listening to all the names in order and guessing the faces and memorizing them. That kind of fun stuff; she seemed like a nice girl. He drew to a quick conclusion that the youngest girl, Nicole, had taken a bit of a liking to him already too. While the boy who he assumed was Nicholas was happy…passing notes to Dylan, and Issac, the taller of the two boys was staring off into the middle distance. How mysterious. Though Brendan couldn’t help but chuckle at Nikki’s—as she preferred to be called—reaction towards Heather, even he thought that the girl deserved a bit more credit than that. She might be popular, and rich, and…well…popular, she was probably cool. He just never took the chance to get to know her. He had better things to do than try to be friends with the rich girl. Like fail some tests and collect some rocks. Maybe look for evidence of aliens and work on his bug collection. You know; cool, fun things.

Plopping a pale hand onto Nikki’s head, he smiled down at her and tsked. “Hey kiddo, I’d be happy to show you around,” Gently ruffling her hair as he had with her puppies’ fur, he smiled at her. “Gotta give everyone a chance though. I’m sure Heather here just wanted a chance to get to know you, ‘ya know?” He turned to Heather, who seemed to be in tears by Nicole’s little outburst. Frowning slightly, he looked her up and down. He had to be honest, it was the first time he had ever seen the girl so shaken. The red head saw her a lot around school, and still, this was the first time. Maybe being judged by someone she had just met had really taken a toll on her. “Hey Heather, My pa says, if you cry and the wind changes your face is gonna stay like that…hell actually he said if you make any sour faces and the wind changes it’ll stay like that. And no amount of plastic surgery is gonna help. Actually…he said that’s what happened to my ma. That’s the reason she’s always so sour…” Brendan trailed off in his thoughts, taking the hand he had placed on Nikki’s head and bringing it to rub at his chin. Leave it to Lexy to most likely make a situation ten times worse. He hadn’t even noticed that Heather was holding out a box of treats of Issac.

And speaking of Issac., “Oh! And hell yeah, there’s lots of cool places to hang out around here. Lots of parks, and a mall..somewhere. I’d say the school but that’s boring as s**t. Uhh…” He trailed off once again. "We can go take Storm to the park if you want Nikki~? You can come too Issac, I can show you some great places on the way over. It’s not that far of a walk.” He offered, smiling widely at them, barely noticing the step closer Issac had taken to him. It took him another second to realize the music floating around the area. He looked around confused for a second, and let his eyes land on the girl who had taken the liberty of introducing everyone to him. ‘Must be the oldest…’ he thought. “That’s pretty cool! I always wanted to learn how to play an instrument.” It was true, he had, but his parents didn’t want to waste money on a teacher for lessons. They knew that within a few days he would probably get bored and give up. He most defiantly couldn’t wait to hang out with the new kids on the block.

Her deft fingers slid into familiar rhythm as she held her guitar, tapping her foot to the easy-going rhythm. She had returned almost to the same spot she had been standing before, seeing that Heather had moved onto her brother. Which Gwen didn't mind. In fact, Gwen actually didn't mind Heather at all, but she wondered what everyone had against the girl. Maybe it was the perfection aura she was rocking. Although, it was the last thing Gwen noticed about the girl. Actually, it's funny because the first thing she had noticed about the girl next door was her nicely painted toenails. Gwen laughed to herself, but made no sound. Then her expression changed when she witnessed the tears made on Heather's face. Probably Nikki's doing. Gwen sighed, a little uneasy now because she couldn't help anything. She decided not to mention Nikki's blunder, now or later. No use in arguing about it. She just wished Heather hadn't cried. Like a mother and her children, Gwen felt the shame. Like when a child did something wrong, Gwen felt like it was her fault too. However, she didn't think things like 'Why didn't I raise them better?' or anything of that nature. She just felt the raw emotion come with it. Another wake up call to how hard parenting must be. Poor parents.

She didn't like seeing people cry, because then she herself felt like crying. She knew Issac was probably annoyed by the 'girly emotions', but that boy needed to open up a pint of strawberry-vanilla ice cream and let in some sensitivity for once. All he seemed to run on was adrenaline and testosterone. Gwen rolled her eyes instead of bursting into tears and focused on her little song. It was a rift she had been working on before the move. Something to commemorate this whole day. Currently she had a few chords, but it wasn't as though she has been inspired lately. Maybe these new neighbors could give her some ideas. it took her a moment to realize someone was talking to her. Her eyes shifted upward to meet Lexy's friendly face. The name Lexy was just somehow so befitting for him. She could understand why he didn't want to be known by Brendan.

"You're interested in music..?" Gwen said it slowly, as though she were still processing words. Her disconnection from life sometimes was amazing. A smile broke her face, making her feel a bit better. Cool guy indeed. "Huh, well what type of instrument? I pretty much major in music..." She tried to say the words without sounding like she was bragging, "It's just one of those things you don't have to be completely dedicated to and yet still love. Other then that, you can go crazy and no one can tell you otherwise! Unless like...you annoy the neighbors..." She said this recalling an incident at their very, very first house. The one before the one they moved from. An apartment they had, and sometimes before she could sleep, she had to play her instruments. Which was often the guitar. If it was the harp, it probably would have been more soothing, but alas, they did not have a harp at the time. Gwen returned her thoughts to this neighbor. Her heart was elated. If there was one thing Gwen could never get enough of, was the sweet sound of music. However, somehow she had overheard their plans of going to the park. But...with Nikki probably already peeved at the eldest, she wasn't sure if she would be "allowed" to join. Gwen couldn't help—unless thought otherwise—respect another person's request.

Ava couldn't help but laugh at Dinah. Seize the sex? Oh dear goddess. She'd been celibate since she started college, she didn't need to be thinking about intercourse. Even though the guy was totally hot enough, it still wasn't the more forefront thought she was having about him. It was admiration if anything. Curiosity. She liked new things, and that included people. She frowned though as Dinah admitted to eating all of the cookies. Great. She didn't have time to go home and bake more before Lexy took off with the new neighbors, as it so seemed that he was going to do. The whole bit with the younger girl yelling at Heather had even been heart-breaking to Ava, at least until she shoved a box of something at Isaac. Oh goddess. There went that twinge of uncharacteristic jealousy again. Curse it all.

Crossing her arms over her chest, she stared Dinah down until the other young woman moved to make her way downstairs, beckoning for Ava to follow her so they could go greet the neighbors. Ava threw her arms up in defeat, turning her eyes heavenward, then pivoted on heel to follow her friend. Fine, she'd go out there now and bring them cookies later. Even late a house-warming gift was still the same. Trotting down the stairs, she stood at the door for a moment, staring at it. She could damn well be assertive, she just hated to lead guys on when she knew she would get bored with them easily. It was just a bad trait. With set determination, Ava opened the door and walked out into the sun.

Walking across the street proved to take a little more determination. She looked both ways then crossed, running over to the other yard. She waved as she walked over, smiling as bright as the sun was shining. Her eyes had started on Isaac, but immediately darted over to Lexy as she walked up next to him. "Merry meet and merry part, Lexy," she chimed as she placed a gentle hand on his back. Then she turned her eyes over to the others. "Who are your new friends, sweetie?" she asked nonchalantly. "I'm Ava. I live down the street." She couldn't help but to occasionally glance to Isaac, though she was trying not to. Even more so she was trying not to look at Heather to spare her the embarrassment, as it seemed she was crying from before.

Isaac's gaze moved between Heather and Brendan. Brendan was kind of spacing out, thinking about who knew what and Heather looked she was on the verge of breaking down. He didn't think Nikki words had hurt her that much but now he was a little ticked off that she couldn't have just said a simple 'no' instead of blowing up like that. He didn't know Nikki had such a short temper. Sure, he knew she was an anti-social tomboy but she shouldn't have snapped like that. Maybe if she was pushed a bit more or dragged away but that hadn't happened. Gwen simply accepted Heather's invitation. Everyone in the family seemed to be irritated with something, except Storm that is. He didn't have to worry about anything. Except fleas.

Suddenly a silver object was pushed in front of him and he was jerked from his little inner monologue of sorts. Looking at the object, he determined it to be a round cookie tin of sorts. He looked up at her questioningly for a second before she explained what was inside. She paused for a second and Isaac thought she might have been collecting herself. He took the tin from her and offered a genuine warm smile. "Thanks you. I'm sure they're wonderful." He smiled again before prying open the tin, only half listening to Brendan as he started talking about faces and wind. Biting into the chocolate treat, Isaac savored the creaminess and nodded his head as he was really enjoying this. "These are really good. I mean, I've never had one before but these are... Isaac couldn't find that right word as he gushed about nommy chocolate.

Closing the tin, Isaac figure he could share the delectable noms with his siblings...later. Maybe. Turning to Brendan, he shrugged. "Nah, I don't want to be a third wheel." he said, motioning with his hand. He'd probably just go find someplace later tonight since they didn't really have any food in the house. Someone was going to have to go out and find food and he was willing to volunteer for that. As Brendan moved to go talk to Gwen about her music, Isaac noticed a tall blonde girl and a shorter black and pink haired girl coming over. The blonde spoke with Brendan, or Lexy as he preferred, like she was a parent meeting her kid's friends for the first time. A brow arched at her greeting to Lexy and her nonchalant attitude. "Isaac," he replied. "That's Gwen, Nicole and...Nicolas is over on the porch with Dylan."He pointed each one out as he named them like Gwen had before.
