This pickled vegetable...Okay, so I'm cleaning my apartment (my roommate's a hoarder, a really bad one) and I find this book called the Holy Zohar. Curious, I open it up and read a bit of the introduction.
Apparently, this supposedly this "magic" book that will protect you so long as you keep it on your person. The intro goes on to give examples from the Spanish Inquisition etr. (which I don't really believe a word of), as well as a little bit about the book's history. Curious, I flip past the intro to the actual Zohar and its all written in Hebrew!
This is all well and good for someone who was a good Jew and actually bothered to learn their Hebrew when they were a kid, but I have no idea what it says and I wanna read it! [/annoyed]
"Whine moar." You say? "What's the point of this thread?" You say?
Basically, what I want to know is if there are any English translated versions of the Zohar that I can read. I'm curious and I want to know what it says. ... could kick your a** !!

This might be it based on the wiki description saying it was written by a Spanish Jew during the inquisition. ZoharThe other alternative though I'm less likely to believe this to be the case seeing as the author was a gentile is here. The Book of Abraham the Jew

The original Zohar is the sourse of Jewish Kabbalah mysticism. It was written over a millenia before the Spanish inquisition.
I would not read it if I were you. Many Jews have, accoring to legend, been driven mad by the things it says. Also, there are certain requirements you must fulfill to be elgible to read it by Jewish Law. You must be a Jew and over 35 and have kids and etc.

expanding on the space jew's comments- according to legend 1/4 of all who read it commit suicide, another 1/4 go insane, a further 1/4 just die, and only 1/4 actually benefit from it.

Emet_Paladin of Truth expanding on the space jew's comments- according to legend 1/4 of all who read it commit suicide, another 1/4 go insane, a further 1/4 just die, and only 1/4 actually benefit from it. I am not familliar with this statistic, but I believe it because I know that many Jews have gone completely insane from reading it. Actually, the statistic reminds me of a story I once learned in Talmud class: "4 rabbis entered the Garden of Eden in Heaven. The four rabbis were Ben Azzai, Ben Zoma, Aher and Rabbi Akiva. G-d was there and the rabbis looked into the face of G-d. Ben Azzai looked into the face of G-d and died instantly. Ben Zoma looked into the face of G-d and went completely insane. Aher looked into the face of G-d and decided to leave Judaism forever. Only Rabbi Akiva looked into the face of G-d and was able to depart from the garden, unharmed." I actually think that this story might be the source of that statistic? Because reading the Zohar is kind of like looking into the real face of G-d, which most humans cannot handle. The Zohar is the dark, mystic truths about G-d and His Universe and most people cannot handle it. It is very dangerous.

But how is the statistic on non-jews? Atheists? Pagans? But according to You, there would be no such statistics, if You officcially must be Jew to read it. As i see it, it is simple, if You must be officially Jew, and in it find proof that Judaism is not what it think it is, then You has to go insane, and suicide is a frequent result of insanity.
Still, i'd suggest questioning everything about it if one starts to read it. Question it, even from the start. But, this might require being able to question one's own beliefs, and even knowledge, from the start ......

So you are saying 1 in 4 people die who reads it? I would say everyone who reads it dies. LOL
Anyway, according to society, anyone who believes in anything could be considered insane by others who don't subscribe to those beliefs... So, that silliness is irrelevant as well.
Besides, the Zohar is becoming a more popular bit of spiritual literature, and so there is no real basis for these bogus stats anyway.
Look, I've read it, it's good if you take time to think about what you're reading, pretty much like any other religious text. I encourage anyone interested in religion to read it.

These people of legend who are telling me not to read this book... They clearly did not study psychology. XD I want nothing more than to read this right now.
It's weird, the further I get into this thread, the more I feel like I'm stumbling into an internet meme intended to totally blow my mind.
By the way, The Game.

Lumanny the Space Jew Eltanin Sadachbia Besides, the Zohar is becoming a more popular bit of spiritual literature, and so there is no real basis for these bogus stats anyway. Besides the Holy Torah Sheb'al-Peh, the Talmud. I have never read the 1/4 die, 1/4 commit suicide, (which actually means 1/2 who read it die, but everyone dies eventually) 1/4 go mad, and 1/4 benefit from reading the Zohar, in the Torah or the Talmud... Sorry, I still find them bogus statistics.
