Yes, but the doctor is a loveable sort of full of himself. River is just obnoxious about it.

Well, ANYWAYS... I don't think she's going kill the Doctor. Everybody's expecting River to kill him, but that just seems too predictable. I think that she's going to kill Rory (but I really hope not), because he does seem like a pretty awesome guy.

Not a bad gif. And it definitely captures that 1930's femme fatale thang she's workin'
She's like a time-traveling, outer-space Indiana Jones. With cleavage! rofl

*raises hand and joins the minority* I like River too...although, to be honest, I liked Library River better than Criminal River. She was a tad too bold and brash this time around...but she is younger. Traveling with the doctor, plus growing up, would definitely mellow her down to how she was in the Library. But all in all, I like River. Alex plays her very well.

My views on River:

If you study her carefully you can see that she's trying to make the Doctor like her and shape him into the version that she knows and loves. She doesn't do this so much in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but you can see her do it a lot in Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone. How she tries to make the Doctor think she's not a criminal by twisting the facts around and also how she tries to take charge of everyone, even though she doesn't have the authority.
So I guess that the character is great and I think structured so we are meant to hate her, just because, at the moment, the Doctor hates her. I think, eventually, she will get the Doctor on her good side and we'll all just love her.
I'm sort of going against what ThePriestess said on the first page (cbb quoting), sure she is older than all the other companions but she is still pretty immature. I think she thinks of the Doctor as just someone who will get her out of sticky situations.
She obviously tries to make Amy jealous in Time of Angels when she says that the Doctor and her are more than married, but it didn't work because Amy had Rory (socks, cake, Rory heart ). She was trying to make it seem that, no matter how hard the companions try, she is the Doctor's all time favourite (this is because she had never met Rose).

One extra thing:

Does she have to have double episodes? At the moment I'd rather not see her for two hours on the occasional fortnight.

I'm torn on what to think of River. I like her, really I do, but at the same time she's such a Canon Sue that I really just want to bring Donna back to yell at her some. She's egotistical and while she obviously very much loves the Doctor, she seems to be in it all for her own benefit and to atone for that mysterious murder.

As for who she kills, I'm not convinced that she kills the Doctor. Certainly, she says that she kills the "best man she ever knew" but it's a bit silly to think that this automatically means the Doctor. It could be him, yes, but I have a bit more faith in Moffat than him allowing something so... predictable. If she is going to "kill to regen" the Doctor, it certainly won't be anytime soon. Smith is signed on for at least one more series, and according to interviews he'd like to stay on as the Doctor for as long as possible.

If I had to guess who she will kill, I'm in the Rory camp. Rory is the kind of character who is quite possibly better than the Doctor in some cases. Rory's devotion and love for Amy makes the Doctor look shallow. So that "best man" could easily be Rory. But I really, really hope not on both fronts. Perhaps it'll be a character introduced in the next series.

Wow, this is turning into an amazing thread!
All right, true confessions time redface :
I like the version of River that evolved in my fanfics during the Season-Without-a-Season, 2009. VERY different from the "Lara Croft + Han Solo + Mrs. Moffat-in-Bondage heels (WTF Stephen?)" version of River we see in this season. (if you'd like to meet that version, she's in the Land of Fiction under "Artifacts").
Honestly, I'm not sure what to think of the direction this whole thing's going. I THOUGHT she was going to be a one-shot, and therefore free game for the fan-fic crowd. Boy, was I wrong.
I REALLY hope she doesn't kill Rory. He's wonderful. And too good for Amy, IMNSHO.

Oh, and as regards the "Rose is his special favorite" school of thought . . . Um . . . How to put this? . . . she was his "special favorite" while they were TOGETHER . . . but so was Sarah Jane . . . and Romana . . . etc. . . . etc. The Doctor doesn't do relationships well. Rose is better off with 10.2. wink
