Hey everybody! biggrin

I'm doing a project at school. As part of that, I'm doing a survey about what makes manga/western graphic novels and the like good and why do people like them. My survey is more of focuses on people of my age-teenagers but you can still do the survey if you're not. I'll just give me extra information.

You can post your reply here or pm it to me. Thanks in advance.

If there are things that you really don't want to tell-e.g. age- that's okay you don't have to.
Here's the survey:

Survey: Why do people like Graphic Novels?

I guess it's because of the saying "An image is a 1000 words' worth", plus having a look at how the artist portrays the world described by someone else or themselves is a good plus.

Age:
I'm 22.

Gender:
Male

Your Background:
By definition or standards, I'm american, but I'd rather be called Dominican, since Dominican Republic is where I currently live and where I was born.

What do you read:
Mostly manga.

Genres:
Seinen and Shounen.

If you read multiple types of graphic novels which do you prefer and a quick why:

For the type of graphic novels you read:

What do you like about them? Why?:
Bakemonogatari.
The storytelling.

What do you dislike about it? Why?:
How slow it can be sometimes.

Any other points on why you read it, what attracts you?:
The weird atmosphere it transmits.

For the graphic novels you don't read:
Please note which type you are referring to please.
Shoujo.

Is there a particular reason why you don't read them? What don't you like about them?:
I feel their plot sometimes lacks the touch of reality, no matter how deep the plot seems, sometimes it's just not what I'm looking for.

Survey: Why do people like Graphic Novels?

Age:
19

Your Background: (just generally- e.g. Asian or European. This is because I want to see if it has any influence on the type of graphic novel people read)
I'm Asian-American.

What do you read: ( Manga, Western-American graphic novels? Other types of graphic novels? it doesn't have to be just one of them)
When I was younger, manga. Nowadays, pretty much anything I can get my hands on, mostly Western graphic novels (European and American). A lot of webcomics, by the way.

Genres: (the genres you read)

Anything interesting. I don't really like sports-genre stuff though.

If you read multiple types of graphic novels which do you prefer and a quick why:
Recently, I haven't been picking up a particular genre. I do still like bloody and violent comics though, with lots of action.

For the type of graphic novels you read:

What do you like about them? Why?:
Storytelling, unique ways of presenting a subject. The thing about most literature these days is that nothing is truly unique anymore, it's how it's presented that makes it stand out.

What do you dislike about it? Why?:
Weak and/or ambiguous conclusions. It's a problem I'm seeing with both manga and European comics. Endings are sort of left in the air so that the reader can figure out where the story should end next. I understand it from a storyteller's standpoint, but it's very frustrating.

Any other points on why you read it, what attracts you?:
I pick out comics that people have told me were interesting, or if I find the art interesting. I know one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but art is a huge selling point to me.

For the graphic novels you don't read:
Please note which type you are referring to please. Is there a particular reason why you don't read them? What don't you like about them?: (e.g. you don't read them because they're more expensive, you don't like the art or the way the tell the story...)
Sports-based comics? Well, I hate sports. Therefore, it doesn't interest me.

Survey: Why do people like Graphic Novels?

Age: 14 (god.. i feel like a child ._.)

Gender: female

Your Background: irish/scotish. native american. 1/10th german

What do you read: MANGA. Web Comics. News Paper Comic.

Anything else/other notes you want to include:

Genres:
Dark / Romance / Action. / Fantasy

If you read multiple types of graphic novels which do you prefer and what is the deciding point, what makes you like one better?:
Like more of Dark Romance. Forbbin stuff. To me it makes the story more interesting to read.

For the type of graphic novels you read:

What do you like about them? Why?: Forbbin Stuff. Because of the suspense, though if the comic is based on fantasy or real life it sometimes shows the most unecpected thing could/can happen.

What do you dislike about it? Why?: The two main characters can't see how other people lie and minipulate them. >=| Grr. Or like in 'until death do us part' Mamoru always tries to push Haruka away even though he has feelings for her. So annoying. >=| though it makes it interesting.

Any other points on why you read it, what attracts you?: the action mostly or the characters or story line in general

For the graphic novels you don't read:

Is there a particular reason why you don't read them? What don't you like about them?:
Sometimes it could be the art..No offence to the artist ofcorse. But Im very picky. Or it could be that the romance is wayyyy to much. or i just get irritated because they drag the story on to long like they did in Naruto. seriously just get to the end already!

Survey: Why do people like Graphic Novels?

Age: 20
Gender: Female

Your Background: Asian

What do you read: Manga

Anything else/other notes you want to include:

Genres: mostly shounen but I read shoujo sometimes

If you read multiple types of graphic novels which do you prefer and what is the deciding point, what makes you like one better?:
I prefer graphic novels with a balance of good art and storytelling

For the type of graphic novels you read:

What do you like about them? Why?:
the catchy and humorous plot and characters

What do you dislike about it? Why?:
very very long plotline. Ex. One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach: *blech!* I really like these anime at first, but then it seems that its got too many story fillers and the pace of the story is too slow...

Any other points on why you read it, what attracts you?:
for me, its the characters and story line mainly...art is next.
and its also good if its not cliche

For the graphic novels you don't read razz lease note which type you are referring to
Is there a particular reason why you don't read them? What don't you like about them?:

I hate shoujo mangas wherein there's just one guy/girl (usually nerdy or unattractive) and multiple love interests...e.g. "mahou sensei negima" and "love hina"
I also don't buy mangas with ugly front covers.

Survey: Why do people like Graphic Novels?

Age: Over 25
Gender: Female

Your Background: (just generally- e.g. Asian or European. This is because I want to see if it has any influence on the type of graphic novel people read) American, European ancestory

What do you read: ( Manga, Western-American graphic novels? Other types of graphic novels? it doesn't have to be just one of them) Manga, freelance graphic novels (American), old school comic books (Marvel on occasion)

Anything else/other notes you want to include:
Genres: Action/Adventure mostly, occasionally some humorous romance like Gaba Kawa.

If you read multiple types of graphic novels which do you prefer and what is the deciding point, what makes you like one better?: Action/Adventure as they are more engaging to me. I like the ones with a strong female character, or a comedic one. Most romances are too unrealistic and predictable for my tastes.

For the type of graphic novels you read:

What do you like about them? Why?: The art, the characters, and the story line. The more interesting the characters in the manga, the more interesting the plot is and the more I am curious about what happens next. And nice art is a must for me!

What do you dislike about it? Why?: Some mangas reallly draw things out way too long, like Naruto and Fruits Basket.

Any other points on why you read it, what attracts you?: I am a huge fan of the Japanese art style. I like to use manga as research for improving my own art.

For the graphic novels you don't read:
Please note which type you are referring to
Is there a particular reason why you don't read them? What don't you like about them?: (e.g. you don't read them because they're more expensive, you don't like the art or the way the tell the story...) The art is too cutesy, the stories are too weird or unbelievable or predictable and thus leave me uninterested. Lack of availability is also a factor.
