to be honest, it wasnt "steampunk"... it had a typewriter and an osciloscope with a brass rim... other than that, it was far more modern than Tennant's tardis. most of the intruments (besides the typewriter) were akin to the immaculate white ones in the original doctor whos. if anything, its more alien.
http://www.radiotimes.com/content/features/galleries/doctor-who-exclusive-look-inside-the-new-tardis/06/mainImage.jpg (thats a link to an image of the tardis interior. looks good, but doesnt have any of the common steampunk aesthetics, unless being brown now makes something steampunk)
the new doctor dresses like a schoolteacher though... i preferred the ripped shirt, although i like how Amelia Pond (awesome name!) refused to look away when he was changing. it made me grin for no real reason (however, SHE is gorgeous! she could arrest me ANYDAY!)

Hmmm being an older Dr who fan than some, though not my dad (he's watched it since it started in BLACK AND WHITE), I was a bit apprihensive about the new Dr though he's kooky like the rest of them but in his own way. (Dude, fish fingers and custard!!) And the theme song urked me some but i think I'm going to like this one.
I like how instead of trying to patch up where Tennant left off they completely remodled to suit the new Dr and fitted it in perfectly with how he changed. I like the new look of shiny brass and new sonic screwdriver, it's not very steampunk but it looks pretty cool.
Steampunk has been working it's way into the main stream a bit though.
