This was a topic in one of my classes- should Internet access be free and equal for everyone? And even if it should, does that make it a basic right, like clean water or freedom of religion? My answer was that, although Internet access should be as widespread as possible, you still gotta pay for it. And online criminals, hackers, and such aren't guaranteed free and open access. Even if they were, that doesn't make the 'net a right. It's a technology, used to get at information. The EU and UN are still going on about how no one should be denied freedom of information. But seriously guys, can't we just buy books? EDIT: And is the internet always a good thing? Thoughts?

I do buy books. I read alot. Whether fiction or non-fiction, I still read. Anyway even so Its much lighter to carry ONE laptop then millions of books to get your information. Also it would cost a lot more then internet would to buy books on all the information on the internet that is, just like the universe, constantly expanding. ^.^ Very short reply and quite simple. If you find any problems with my explaining please comment on them I enjoy stating my views.

@purewolf: I'm with you on that. But is the internet a basic right? Should we let major hackers have access? @emo_bunneh: And the internet isn't modified? There are so many hackers out there, I just don't think that will work.

Agreed. So there's not much else I can say.
People do need to read more, however. I may not read as much as I did when I was younger, but I still love to buy at least one book when I go shopping. And I always have one I'm reading.

XxRen_The_Emo_BunnehxX sorry but I disagree as books seem to always be modified to spread misinformation such as the bible spreading hatred against gays and so on. I disagree. Books are much more reliable sources than the internet. Why do you think most college professors won't accept internet sources? Because most are biased, some are wrong, and some can be changed by anyone.
Books, however, go through publishing. Authors spend at least a year in the process. It's unlikely they are writing a bunch of random crap they came up with.
Also, do you really believe there are no anti-gay websites? Because if I searched "gays are stupid" on google right now, I get 8,350,198 hits. neutral

I'm going to play devil's advocate here... Well, there are some pretty messed up books that have been published- once a book is in print it can't be easily retracted or corrected- and updated editions don't always reach those who have the original copy. Books can be just as biased and wrong as websites- and what about other printed media like newspapers and magazines? I've seen a lot of random crap there that could be shouted down as inaccurate very easily on the internet. But you can also hack, spam, or just bully a very nice opinion that's well-supported and thought through. If you're saying that the disadvantages outweigh the benefits, why are you posting your opinion in an arena where it won't be noted? I'm not saying that your opinion isn't valid- in fact, i pretty much agree. But I'd like to know whether you think that the internet is a good or bad thing.

I was just responding to that particular comment.
If you want to know: I don't think the internet should be or is a right. In fact, before I used it so much I wouldn't mind not getting on. But because I get on a lot, it's hard to get off. Hard to do work, hard to concentrate, because I would rather be on the internet. I think people are better off without it, honestly.
And I know I'm a hypocrite.

The internet should be free to all users, but then we'd get the whole child predators/murderers/rapist/etc. online and we get a problem. But to have something restricted when everyone could get to it is just stupid.
