I'm re-watching Soul Eater at the moment, so I've got that on the brain. I'll say Medusa. She forces her daughter [Crona is so a girl!] to murder and consume human souls as to become a Kishin, uses Shibusen students for her research, and sees the world and the people inhabiting it as a massive experiment which she is allowed to manipulate and observe as she pleases. That and she just won't stay dead. Darned snake witch.

For me the greatest villain ever created is Light Yagami from Death Note.
He is the most insincere, sneakiest bad guy ever created.

Agreed. I love how the director of the anime (I haven't read much of the manga) made no attempt to inspire sympathy in the audience. There were some justifications to his actions but none of it was stressed.

I have to say, if no one else has said this already, Claude Frollo from Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo. Such a classic, he's such a great symbol for corruption in the Church.

mr friend says Poison Ivy is the ultimate villain because technically she can never die (the theory had been discussed). Poison Ivy also has a deadly perfume called Night Shade, and that is a very toxic botanical btw. (says my friend)...i say Bananach, from the Wicked Lovely series that Melissa Marr wrote. she is truly evil. her only cause is to wreak havoc and chaos by having the four courts do battle with one another. her only goal is bloodshed. a villain i loved to hate.

I'd say the nameless (I think he was) serial killer in Silence of the Lambs. I'd say Hannibal Lecter would work too, but I saw him more of an antagonist, rather than a pure villain. The other guy creeped me the hell out a LOT more then Hannibal did.

I'd have to say the BEST villain of all time I've read though was Hrathen from Elantris. He didn't lose from the "I'm going to make a stupid mistake just so the heroes can win" thing. In fact, the entire book was the villain and heroes out maneuvering each other, without them making mistakes on purpose. This is how villains should be written, IMO. It also helps he has a damn good reason to be evil, rather than just "I'm being evil because I'm evil. DUH." type of thing.

I'll throw Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes book's into the ring. However despite having been given a substantial collection I've yet to read any with him in.A list containing him would be nice.

Psh, none of those villians have anything on the Borg.

Umm, well my personal favorite villains are the Joker, because of the twisted psyche-stuff involved in his character, and Karl from Unknown-Person's "Castle of Nations" comics. Karl is like a character who'd be very likeable, if not for the fact that his philosophy is "the ends justify the means" and he enjoys killing as a mean. No, not just killing. Destruction and chaos in general.
Although he is damn funny... >-> <-<

Ahahaha! Then my ultimate antagonist that I thought of at the moment would be from the Harry Potter series. And the person is Dolores Umbridge; can a person be as bitchy as her?

Dolores Umbridge
Sauron (Let's face, he's the main antagonist and we never actually see him. That is pretty damn impressive.)
Any Villain from Sherlock Holmes (They prove quite a challenge that only Sherlock's mind can overcome and even then, they have another side to them.)
Mrs. Hubbard from Murder on the Orient Express (The ends for which she set where genius in the book.)
The Queen of Hearts
Satan/Lucifer from The Bible

(Sigh) I need to read more good villains. There just not a lot of good books aqppealing to my Fantasy/Sci-fi side right now.
