I thoroughly researched this topic as I have recently had my own Alice in Wonderland party. Everything was centered around a tea party theme where I made bight sized sandwiches (spinach sandwiches, peanut butter and banana pinwheels, rainbow sandwiches, cheese and bacon crepes etc.) also instead of the usual cake I opted for petite fours (little bight sized desserts) My friend who dressed up as the queen of hearts also brought little rose shaped cookies which were done in red with little white sprinkles.
My mom purchased a set of Alice in Wonderland cups (oversized brightly colored cups that this poor college student couldn't afford). I had a costume theme as well, thus my boyfriend dressed as the mad hatter and begged for the ability to randomly shout "Move down move down, new cup new cup!" which worked well because I had set up more spaces than I needed so whenever he shouted it the person furthest away from everyone else, or who was talking to someone across the table had to move closer.
Everything was hand decorated as I didn't have enough time to shop for Alice in Wonderland specific decor. I managed to find a small glass pedestal with matching plates which I served the food on, the glass pedestal reminds me of the glass table Alice found the key and drink me cup on. I surrounded the glass pedestal with drink me cups which were little glass bottles filled with brightly colored kool-aid for appearance, however everyone was so amused that they drank from them anyway and mimicked shrinking and growing.
I grabbed some oversized cards from a near-by dollar store which I hole punched and strung up like steamers. Over all everything looked fantastic.
I wanted to decorate top hats as well as an event but it was too expensive for all the items I wanted. Thusly I ended up decorating only one for my boyfriends costume. I also wanted to bring my boyfriends hookah over for an ambiance factor but I figured since my parents would also be attending it was not appropriate. Look up Alice in wonderland cakes though, there are some incredible fashion topple cakes which are simple and beautiful to make yourself!
