So she'd gotten it wrong. Phoebe frowned, what piece of the puzzle could she possibly be missing? Life and death, life and death, that was the key! And Muerta had said the males had their place, so the part about babies had been right, but what was it she couldn't see?
"I'm afraid I've never heard of it," Phoebe admitted ruefully, dead deer long forgotten.

Muerta frowned ever so slightly and gazed at the sky. "Yin and Yang are ancient concepts. Some think they are spirits of the old world, deities of another realm. But what they really are concepts of life. Yin and Yang are push and pull, black and white, joyful and sorrowful, inhale and exhale, male and female... life and death." Muerta looked pointedly at the princess. She hoped that she was paying attention. "There is an old tale that says that Yin and Yang are two fish circling each other in the big ocean of space. They complement each other and entwine in an eternal dance. They are the essence of life and death." Muerta chuckled slightly. "In truth, it doesn't make much sense to me either. Life and death fascinate me, but I am certainly no expert on the matter."

Phoebe was indeed paying a attention. She was fascinated, as she'd never been before. She stared, leaning forward ever so slightly, trying to catch every word.
"Maybe... maybe it isn't something we have to understand," she said slowly, "it just is. Like. Like the sky is blue, I've always known it's blue, but I don't know why. That's just the way it is. But no, that's a bad example! A green sky wouldn't be that different. Maybe it's like water going downhill, but more so? Just a rule, more interesting than most, but a rule nonetheless. The Yin and the Yang need each other to exist, otherwise everything's just the same and neither one really exists. Like the earth and the sky! If everything was earth or everything was sky there'd be no name for either. And we wouldn't be alive," she added with a laugh.

Muerta smiled at Phoebe. "Yes... Yes, you do understand! You understand that we do not have to understand everything. It just is. We do not have to question it. But some do. Some ask "Why?" and look for answers. And that is how we know so much already about the world. But we really know so little." Muerta stood and leaped down from the boulder. She stood by the deer carcass. "And you are correct saying that they need each other. Another example to think of..." Muerta smiled and turned to face Phoebe.
"You know what angels and demons are, correct? Angels are heavenly beings of virtue and demons are hellish monsters of sin. But think: if there were no demons, would we know what an angel was? And if there were no angels, what would a demon be? They need each other to be whole. As do the earth and sky, males and females, and life and death. We are all the same... All one part of a mass whole."

Phoebe nodded. "You have certainly given me a lot to think about. But I really must get back to the pack while this meat is still fresh," she added ruefully. She nodded politely to Muerta before bending down to pick up the doe and leave.
