techno bomber Sweetie dont join the Army I promise its the lowest paid, MOST of the people are shitbags, they dont care about you, and the ******** you over really bad. Me and my husband are in a BIG predicament thankis to people in the Army lieing to us. there are though ALOT of dumb people in the Army I can tell you this with great confidence. My husband has to deal with it all the time, hes a smart guy and it drives him insane. X_X Go to the Air Force they take GOOD care of you. They are pampered and get paid a s**t ton more than the Army people. ... the payments are the same across the board. It's based on rank not branch. Army National Guard will pay you most for school, perhaps Air Force pays more or a comparable amount but I never looked into it. As for the dumb and the shitbags and blah blah blah, no, it's not unfair, it's reality. Sure there are some really smart people, but they usually become officers if they're book smart. If they're street smart they'll probably get promoted through the enlisted ranks faster. The fact of the matter is, when a civilian thinks of the military, whatever branch, they think infantry. The infantry are dumb as rocks a good 8/10. I would know, I married one. In every branch you're going to run into dumb people and shitbags because the armed forces advertise to poor people who have nowhere else to go, and they come flocking, especially in economic times like this. -EDIT- Air Force are definitely pampered, their E-2's get the treatment of an Army E-5 and I wish I was kidding. But like I already said, how much you get PAID is based on rank, not branch. The TOYS you get to play with however...

^As far as tuition assistance is concerned, the Air Force pays 100% up to a certain amount annually. I think it's like... $5,200 or something a year. CLEP/DSST exams are free, with no limit to how many you take.
Pay across the board is equal but SRBs are a different story. In those instances, the Army and Marines take the cake.
Also, why would you "wish [you] were kidding" about Air Force E-2s getting treated like Army E-5s? This is a bit of an extrapolation, but it sounds like you folks want the junior enlisted to be treated like crap. I put my subordinates above everything else I do on and off the clock. A lot of NCOs I work with do. I just don't see that in the other branches whenever I've worked with'em.
I guess I just don't understand you guys' culture- you give your people nothing, tell them nothing- and expect them to perform at peak levels? I mean geez, I have two friends in the Army, one in the Marines, and NONE of them knew there was a legal office on base (they were getting married and had no idea how to get a prenup- they almost made the idiot move of not getting one. No offense to anyone here who is married without one.). Just seems WAAAAY like a stress multiplier to me. No mas. I already work 12-16 hour days, I don't need that stuff in the forefront of my mind. sweatdrop

i know its been awhile since you posted this but if i may put my opinion in, im not the smartest person in the world as you can tell if i misspell some words but ive been serving the Army proudly for going on 4 years now and i love it. you will always come across those against the government and the war and so on, but its your choice to join. if you are in the military (no matter what branch) feel pride in knowing that the idiots that say we're stupid or dumb are to afraid to do what we're doing. we know what we do and who or what we do it for. but remember that there are REALLY stupid people in all branches. ive work with every branch espicially on my tours. but they still stood up and chose to fight for the idiots. if you want to join DO IT. but do it with pride and honor. ninja

Infantry being dumb? That is really just something that media via movies and tv shows has put on the Infantry and the constant bickering through Pogues and Combat Arms.
Really most Infantrymen that I have met are smart guys. Yeah infantry may have the lowest asvab score to get in but most guys have high scores on their tests.
Myself I am a Tanker. Proud of it. In recent years it is the biggest Combat Arms MOS that has to change and evolve to the rules, environment, and situations on the battlefield. One minute we are prepping tanks to roll out of the wire and the next we are on foot on the streets outside the wire. But hey we got to adapt and get the job done.
Marines are also smart the only thing I don't like about them is their ability not to choose a job they want to do. I mean they are "Proud to be a Rifleman" attitude that I hear from most Marines that I have met and I just shake my head at the thought that a Tanker Marine would think in his head that he would rather shot a M4 and not the 120MM.
But hey all branch's have their ups and downs. Everyone is going to have their good units and their crappy ******** up units. Can never get away from that. All that really matters is what your serving for. And hopefully its for that person that's standing to your left and your right and the guy behind you has your back always.

Well, to be successful in the military as a combat troop you've got to have a fast reaction time and good problem solving skills, as every set of terrain and change in environment, weather, etc. can cause detrimental effects to your performance. You've got to be smart and remember what your doing to pull it all off.
Not to mention, it's ridiculously helpful to know another language, hopefully the enemy language, and to be able to do fast calculations in your head.
It's also more mental than anything to be in the military, so saying it's okay to be "dumb" is kind of a far cry from the truth. You need to be smart in some manner in order to survive. And all the non-combat troops typically need some other kind of job, which takes a good deal of intelligence.
Basically, Nerds tell themselves that everyone else is stupid and that only they are smart. Anyone who can do something they want to is "stupid". I was in football and I still know people that think jocks are stupid. Even though they know that me and plenty of them are smarter than them; of course, many of them don't think of "us" as "jocks". rolleyes

Let me share a secret. The Marines actually purposely propagate that stereotype. Almost every Marine that I have known will say the same thing. It entertains us.

Personnally I dont really care what people say about us. I only care about proving them wrong. That's the only thing that matters and once they see that they're wrong, it's hilarious to watch them blanch at the thought of calling us dumb. Maybe they think we're dumb because we would sacrafice ourselves for a complete stranger. That could be an otherwordly concept to them even though that is one of my plain facts. If they talk crap about us what credibility do they have in the first place? I know one Marine and one Army soldier who regretted joining and thats because they failed at their jobs and one got a dishonorable discharge. They were just holding a grudge and the best that we can do for people like that is excell at our MOS. it really gets on their nerves

There are smart and stupid military members. However, if you look around, there are also smart and stupid civilians. This is why you shouldn't let it bother you. Ignorance is independent of status.
^Now if I ever said that if and/or when I join up, I would get my a** handed to me. XD
