Hi guys, I'm doing a bit of advertising for this OC tournament, since I'm hoping more people will join. Actually, the contest is still under construction, but a few of the competitors are getting a headstart, so why don't you check it out too?
To those who never heard of it (or don't go on deviantArt), an OC Tournament is a kind of contest where you fight other people's original characters with your own original character(s). It's done as a tournament, and whoever wins the tournament gets:
+ 1 Million Gold
+ 75% of the Entrance Fee gold pool
+ 1st Gen. Anima Adamantea
+ 1st Gen. Picolitrosso's Urn
+ artwork of their character from a few other artists and Judges
The runner-up winner gets:
+ 500k (500,000 gold)
+ 25% of the Entrance Fee gold pool
+ artwork of their character from a few other artists and Judges
How do you battle?
You fight other people's OCs through comic/manga format OR through animation. In your battle entry, your OC must defeat your opponent's OC(s) in some way (you do not have to kill, but render them unable to fight in some way). See the official contest thread for more information.
So, how do you "win?"
You and your opponent will submit their entry of the fight between your two OCs. A panel of judges will decide which one they like better, based on creativity and storytelling (not how good your art is). If your entry is chosen as the winner of the battle, you move on to the next round and fight one of the other winners from the previous round.
I'm not a really good artist! There's no way I could win!
Although good art is a plus, the judges prefer to see creativity and strong storytelling. Basically, be creative with your entries. Here's a direct quote from the tournament:
Quote:
Regardless of how "well drawn" or "realistic" one's work looks, if the opponent's work was more intense, made us connect to the characters and feel sympathy, and was deeper and more original, the Judges are more likely to vote for the latter.
This is confusing, can I see examples of OC Tournament entries done in the past?
Sure. The most famous OC Tournament was "Law of Talos" on deviantArt. Here are some of the best entries in the tournament, at least I personally think so.
BlackLillian - Round Five (versus Karl) - Comic
UnknownPerson - Round One (versus Mizuno) - Flash Animation
ConcentrationMoon - Round Two (versus Spoiler) - Comic, hit Forward to go to the next page
ExiledDelusion - Round Two (versus Kit Bates) - Comic
What makes this OC tournament different from the others?
Spire Island is perhaps the first OC tournament on Gaia Online, at least to our knowledge. Most OC tournaments have been conducted on deviantArt.
In terms of the OCT itself, Spire Island is about a deserted island overrun by the Animated (from zOMG!). On the top of the spire of the island, an extremely powerful Animated called Nicor, who lives off the aura of battle, has arranged a tournament to satisfy his appetite. Your OC somehow gets stuck on the island and forced to fight this tournament, and in order to survive, he/she must fight his/her way to the top of the spire, to meet Nicor.
Any attempts to leave the island is met by Nicor's animated minions. Nicor will only allow one person to leave the island: the champion of his cruel tournament.
My character isn't from the zOMG! universe though!
That's okay, contestants can be from completely different universes. You can bend the universe a bit so that it crosses into the zOMG! universe, at least for this island.
How do I enter?
A 1000 gold fee is needed, in order to separate the serious competitors from those who are just jumping in for fun (and most likely leaving).
You must submit a character reference sheet, which includes a full-body drawing of your own character, also including anything important, such as age, gender, powers, abilities, personality, background history, etc. (so that your opponent fighting you can draw your characters better fighting theirs).
Example character reference sheets:
Unknown-Person - Karl & Arma
Endling - Lilith
In addition, you must write and draw an audition entry, to show that you can draw a comic/manga/animation to some degree. The audition entry must show your character somehow getting on the island, and being met by a peculiar ghost girl named Maya. See the official contest thread for more details.
Submit all three things by the 30th of January on the official contest thread. See the official contest thread for the official entry form.
So, if you have an OC and you think you can kick a** RPing comic/animation-style, then join in!
Spire Island: An OC Tournament is waiting for you!
Oh yeah, I'm entering too. But, don't be intimidated, this is a comic/manga contest, not an art one. biggrin
I'll be here to answer any questions or just to chat about OCTs in general. Or you could use this as an opportunity to stare me down. Idk.
