Mr. Poe sent them to live with Olaf, remember? While that could mean he was on the bad side, he also sent them to live with members of VFD who weren't on the bad side. He couldn't be on the good side and leave them in Olaf's care... unless he was blackmailed. But I don't think so, judging by his reactions at the end of the book. Hmm...

I think that Mr. Poe had no idea who Count Olaf was, and didn't really care. I mean, he always seems to have something better to do. He always assumed they were just uncomfortable in new surroundings, and that their lives weren't threatened. On the website I mentioned, it has facts about how [Possible Spoiler] Geraldine Julienne (or however her name is) desguised herself as Eleanora (Hope I spelt her name right) Poe in order to convince Mr. Poe to make decisions while Olaf held Eleanora Captive. I think she covinced Mr. Poe to send them there in the first place.

[/spoiler?] What site are you referring to? quietworld.com perhaps?

[Sp] Looked back over the TUA...yeah it seems there is something suspicous going on. I wonder what the waiter was trying to tell him before that lunch...Since we don't have a time reference for the telegram, [sp?] It's hard to know the timeframe of the events and if Elenora was in the basement before or after that lunch. [/sp] But yeah, definately something going on there... 3nodding

I wonder who'll be right... confused

Oridaius -All of the Guardians Poe has sent the Baulderlaires to have been members of VFD Coicendence I think not While I agree it isn't coincidence, it's not due to Poe. VFD members are master information-gatherers, and since the parents were involved with VFD, it wouldn't have been hard to get access to the information of who to contact to gain custody of the siblings. Oridaius -Mr. Poe just happened to be at Hoter Duemont on the same day as the VFD meeting. I don't think that was a coincedence We know it wan't coincidence. If you read the latest book, you'd know that everyone who had been involved with the siblings' unfortunate journey had been invited. Many of those people weren't involved with VFD, but they were invited anyway. Oridaius -Poe just happened to be at Briny Beach when the Baulderlaires arived there in book 11. No Coincedence Right, that could be some argument for his involvement in VFD. He said that he had "recieved a message" about the location. However, he insisted that he had no idea why. If he was on the wrong side or just clueless, he would've given that response, making it a lie or just cluelessness. If he was a good member, he would've told them about VFD, most likely. Later, however, he said something that makes me sure that he is not in VFD. He asked them why they had pictures of "Santa Claus" on their shirts. A real member of VFD would know exactly who Herman Mellville was. As for the thing with the Unauthorized Autobiography, it is clear that Volunteers are trying to contact him. However, if he was a real volunteer, would he let his sister yell at another volunteer? And if he was a volunteer, why would other Volunteers need to spy on him instead of just sending him a message? My theory: Poe is no Volunteer. He's just too dumb to realize what's really going on.

Mr. Poe is very shady character as The Series of Unfortunate Events is a shady series of books so Mr. Poe's envolvement in the VFD is up to you the individual reader Personally I think hes a very annoying, infuriating senseless man who serves to only further harass nd inconvenience the Baudelaires. He probably couldb amember of the VFD and at this stage he seems to be on his own side of the schism.

1inaBILLION GalacticGirl I think that the reason Mr. Poe is familiar with so many VFD members is because he runs the bank. The bank is the place where all the fortunes are held, and Mr. Poe has at least some control over them. This would make people like Count Olaf want to get to know him so they could take advantage of his job and become rich. This would make organizations like VFD also want to befriend Mr. Poe, so they could prevent villians from influencing him. Did Mr. Poe actually know any of the gaurdians, though? I don't recall him seeming to know any of the gaurdians, or them seeming to know him. i thought the reason that they were always sent to guardians who wre members of VFD was because the parents must have known them and they must be in some sort of file that Mr Poe has.... *ahem*

I think maybe he's not but then you can't be too careful with these people, you never know who's in VFD or not, you never know who's standing right behind you...
