The goal of my project is to determine the current state of the stream and not to past condition of the stream. Unfortunately I do not have the time or the resources to look at the health of the stream from the past.

I have four different sites for my project. The first site is in a gorge and not in an urbanized area. My second site is located directly under a bridge, and my last two sites in urbanized areas. So basically my sites go from being located in an area that is not urbanized, to an area that is slightly urbanized, to areas that are very urbanized.

At every site I collect 500 ml of water and measure the temperature of the water.

At my first and last site I measure the velocity and the water depth. I have also created cross-sections for these sites. Eventually I will use an equation known as Darcy's Law to help me determine how much water is moving into and out the the stream.

After I have collected my samples I test the pH and grow bacteria in the lab. Eventually I will be testing the salinity of the water too.

I also write down what the weather was like in my field notebook when I go out to collect my samples.

That sounds really sweet! Makes me wish I could afford to be going to school right now. That type of studies sounds like it would suit me perfectly. I hope everything turns out well for your project and please feel free to give updates when you have some results back! ^_^

Koamaru Kai here~ I can't boast of an extensive past of camping, but I've always loved spending time outdoors and learning about the Earth's plants, landscapes, and creatures (humans included). Currently I'm trying to become a little more aware of environmental and natural views/discussions, so I thought joining this guild would be a good step towards that goal (not to mention help me meet some like-minded people).

I'm of the opinion that humans are part of the natural world, so I don't believe it's "unnatural for us to affect and change the world around us. However, with the ability to change our world on such a large scale, I think we have a large responsibility to not go overboard to do irreversible damage.

I look forward to getting to know you all! mrgreen

I am 21 and currently attending a branch campus of Penn State. My major is a B.S. of Science with an Environmental Studies Option. I have recently decided that I will get a minor in geology.

Environmentalism is something I am very passionate about. I am interested in things such as environmental geology, oceanography, groundwater, and water quality analysis. I love water quality analysis so much that I will be spending my entire summer working on a research project analyzing the water quality of a stream that runs through my campus. The goal of the project is to determine whether or not urbanization and large quantities of precipitation increase the amount of bacterial growth in the stream. I am also going to see if these two factors influence the pH of the stream.

I also love hiking, camping, photography, horseback riding, and creative writing.

*high fives* Geology minors RULE! Also... horseback riding and hiking for the WIN!

I noticed your sig and was thinking about it actually! It's been a year or two since I've taken a geology course, so I have to admit that I'm a bit rough on my textbook knowledge, but if that's not a problem you can expect a join request. wink Gotta love how guild interests overlap. whee

It's ok that you are bit rough! My guild is a place to learn and share information! Feel free to join! It is the only geology guild on Gaia.
