Last year I decided I wanted to read my paper-back copy of Hannibal Rising just to refresh myself. I take the book off my shelf and open it to the first page and begin reading. After a while, I start to close the book when I notice a piece of paper peeking out from behind about 20 or so pages. When I flip to the place I discover a 20 dollar bill I had lost the year before. Turns out I had used it to mark my place and forgot about it. I used it to buy more books. xD
So tell me, have you ever found anything interesting or even shocking in your books?

( I didn't see any other threads like this, so I hope it isn't a duplicate ;o )

That's some find 3nodding

I've found nothing as interesting as that. The only thing of note is my bookmark collection.

I collect bookmarks from anime conventions, and since I read on public transport quite a bit, and my younger brother frequently borrows from my bookshelf, this collection doesn't really get a chance to grow to a substantial size.
However, while I was re-reading my copy of Assassin's Apprentice, I was delighted to find one of those beloved bookmarks I'd given up as lost. whee

That used to happen to me, as I once made a habit of stashing money in books. I stopped, finally, because I lend books with some frequency and occasionally forgot to check. In any case, I'm sure that's a bad financial system...

I'm going to have to take a look in my library's back room--the pages have a small bulletin board where they tack up "interesting" (and non-perishible) bookmarks.

There have been several times where we've found photos in books (and no way to return them, since they aren't labeled). I found a bank statement (returned to owner). We also have several books we use to show elementary school kids why eating while reading can be bad (dried-up spaghetti is my personal favorite).

i was reading a laurell k hamilton book i'd picked up at a thrift store, and i found a super sweet note that some boyfriend had written to his girlfriend tucked in the pages.

there were no names, but it was such a cute and sweet note that i used it for a bookmark for a long time, till it got sucked in to the vortex where all my bookmarks end up.

I dont leave that much in my books, i have discovered, but i have made some neat finds in library books.

The usual receipts, colorful papers, i once found a strip with photos, those you get in a photo booth, with a male and a female on the pictures, and they kissing on the last piece. That made my week.

And another time i found an obviously child made picture with sparkles all over, and the words "to mom" written on it. That one i handed in to the library, thats something you want to keep :b

And because of these awesome finds, i try to leave things in library books, to be found by the next person loaning the book X3

In library books I've found lots of regular bookmarks, napkins, and a limpira (South American dollar). And I know a librarian who found $20 in a book one time. When she returned it to the patron who had checked out that book last, he didn't even thank her o.O

The best thing I remember finding in a book was quite some time ago. I had bought a book from the library (they sell off discards regularly) And right inside the front cover was a strip of film like you used to be able to get from movies - you know how they would cut up the reels once the theatre was done with them, and give them away? Anyway, it was five panels from one of the original Star Wars movies. The first one is of one of the Imperial Walkers and the other four show a large door, with Han Solo, R2D2, C3PO and another human (probably either Luke or Leia - I can't quite tell). I still have it, and keep it in the tin I store all my bookmarks in.

Hmmm I did a sort of experiment with this idea. I use my public library liberally but I have a favorie book that I keep going back to re-reading every summer. It's "A Diplomancy of Wolves" by Holly Leslie and it's not very well known, it's outof print and I do have my own copy but this is tradition for me anymore. So I highly doubted anyone else that goes to my library read this book. Thus I wrote a simple message on my makeshift paper bookmark asking "Has anyone else read this book?" I signed it with my name and I left the bookmark in there - right between the cover and the first blank page. I came back the next summer and the bookmark was gone. I was upset, but not dishearted. So I read the book annually as I usually do and figure I may as well re-read the other two books in the triology. The thrid book had the bookmark in it and it had only two responses but that was good enough for me. One was a simple yes and the other was something like "Apparently I'm not the only one who has good taste in books 'Vetrome Elada' Judy" heart

I think I'll have to try that experiment one day, Zomba! That's awesome, how that turned out.

I haven't found too many interesting things (that I can recall at the moment, at least) but I've found old bookmarks and things that I had temporarily used before giving up on the book and forgetting about them.

At one point, though, while I was organizing my bookshelves, I found a book with a slip of paper in it. The paper was a note to myself. smile I had planned on doing something like that for years, and completely forgot that I had actually done it. So I write back to myself on the paper, put it back in the book, and returned it to its shelf. I can't remember which book it was, so it'll be a fun find for next time.
