In order, left to right: Neil, Geddy, Alex

Rush, a three-man band from Toronto, Ontario, was originally formed in August of 1968. Most of their music is considered progressive rock, though they started out playing blues-inspired heavy metal before moving to hard rock and then progressive.

Their music focuses on science fiction, fantasy, and libertarian philosophies while simultaneously addressing issues of the humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental persuasions. All that coupled with the group's phenomenal instrumental skills, complex compositions, and mixed bag lyrics have made the band the influence for Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Primus, and Symphony X.

Rush has 78 singles, 32 music videos, 18 studio albums, worldwide album sales of 40 million+, 24 gold records, and 14 platinum records (3 of which are multi-) to their name as a group.

Current members as of 1974 to present are:
Geddy Lee - Bassist, lead vocals, keyboard, synthesizers, electric and acoustic rhythm guitars
Alex Lifeson - 6 & 12-string acoustic and electric guitars, backing vocals, bass, various ethnic strings
Neil Peart - percussionist; no more needs to be said.

Neil is the legend of the group; a practical percussion prodigy. With a rising/rotating drum setup during live performances, his solos are considered some of the finest in live concert performances. Peart is the primary lyricist for Rush, influenced and inspired by Ayn Rand's individualistic and Objectivist writings. But despite how much he's in it, Neil actually loathes the limelight. The song by the same name reflects his feelings towards being in the spotlight. He recently (August 2009) had a daughter by wife and photographer Carrie Nuttall; the baby is Olivia Louise Peart.

Geddy, born Gary Lee Weinrib, is the vocalist and bassist, and the man has a sense of humor. Ever since the band got rid of the traditional amplifiers in '96, odd appliances such as dryers, shelf-style vending machines, and rotisserie ovens, all of which have been operational on stage, have been placed on Geddy's side of the stage as a mark of his sense of humor.

Alex is surprisingly the least recognized of the group, despite being the founder of the band. Born to Serbian immigrant parents, Alex's born name was Aleksandar Živojinović. I'm not even going to attempt to say that, but his stage name, Lifeson, is a near-literal translation of the Serbian surname, which means "son of life". He plays a multitude of string instruments from multiple regions, including the mandolin and bouzouki.

Rush, as a group, was the first rock band whose members were made Officers of the Order of Canada. They also appear as themselves in the 2009 movie I Love You, Man.

~summarized/paraphrased from Wikipedia entires "Rush", "Geddy Lee", "Neil Peart", and "Alex Lifeson"

------------------------
I have almost every album released. Rush was my first venture into progressive rock, the first song I heard from them being "Time Stands Still" from the compilation album Spirit of Radio.

My current favorite songs are "Lock and Key", "Mystic Rhythms", and "Everyday Glory".

Discuss/share opinions on the band, your favorite songs or albums, concerts seen, swag collected, etc.

((Better graphics to come; what's here are placeholders.))

...X.x.X...I like The Trees
...X.x.X...Thought it was the coolest song when I was a kid.
...X.x.X...Magical. Starts out kind of like medieval minstral music. Then it kicks into that which is RUSH

...X.x.X...It's even better when you're older and "get" that the song is about a whole lot more than like, talking trees.

...X.x.X...I love the last lines.
...X.x.X...Something about All the trees are equal by hatchet, axe and saw.
