Not to mention your first hanzi doesn't exist in Japanese.

You mean the last one (錡)? 趙 exists in Japanese; it's just a "name-only" kanji. 錡 isn't in any list I can find.


From my records and others I've searched I can't find the first one either.

Jeffrey's has it: http://gokanji.com/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/dokanji?index=t&ivalue=6c64 -- It's on the "reference" list, so it's approved for use but it doesn't appear in words in the Japanese language itself, only names.

If I may bring up something slightly irrelevant, this article has a lot of good stuff about how Japanese names have worked over the years, and includes a lot of the ones you'll come across when making friends in Japan. Still one of my favorites about the subject, and one I'd highly recommend for students to read
